Now I know what all the fuss is about when people mention the Laneway festivals! Nestled amongst the museum, tafe, the art gallery and the library was the best stage set-up I’ve experienced in, well ever. There was virtually no cross over of sounds (except when listening to Mumford and Sons or Sarah Blasko if you were at the back, but trust me it was so far back it was still acceptable) . The crowd was filled with music appreciators (based on broad stereotypes of what music appreciators look like). Best of all, there was super quick bar service despite the huge crowd, hooray! I should probably tell you about the music know too, but that’s all after the jump (mainly because I was in way over my head!) [...]
We’ve all heard plenty about the proposed stop and search laws, and both Perthquake (previous article here) and Heads Will Roll (previous article here) are vehemently against these laws, as I’m sure many of you are. It doesn’t take long to think about some of the negative consequences of this law, just see the wall on the facebook group! To help the state government in their decision, and try and make them see why this law is not the answer you can do the following…

Right off the bat I am going to have to admit that this is not a fair review. I Held a bit of bias on the night of Monday the 1st of February as it happened to be my birthday. Despite this I will try to hold the upmost stance of professionalism and objectivity regardless of the fact I was having a pretty good day already.
Who am I kidding? It was everybody’s birthday this Monday, well, everybody who made it down to the Astor theatre for [...]
Here’s something else we’re going to try to do regularly, Perth dj mixes. Now we haven’t started on the best foot because Spaks has actually left to live in San Fransisco, but this mini mix is phenomenal and it’s worth linking it back to the Perth electronic music scene. I’m sure you’ve heard Spaks, either playing at Shape, Bar Open for the Bump or Dorcia or at Origin? Impressive resume! Well the entire mixtape is nothing less than you’d expect from a Perth super dj, it is so fast paced, with smooth changeovers between each track and the tracks themselves are so easy to tap your feet to. I beg you to have a listen! Full tracklist after the jump.
Artist: Kid Sister
Title: Ultraviolet
Label: Downtown
Release: 29 January 2010
Rating: 7/10
Here’s the first album review for Perthquake, hooray! On first listen I wasn’t really into Kid Sister’s Ultraviolet album. There’s a large amount of hype surrounding it because Kid Sister’s on Downtown (Santogold, Amanda Blank), but I wasn’t easily swayed. I know it’s pop but it felt too commercial, shallow and repetitive, until the second listen! Something happened and all the things I hated turned around to be everything I loved about this album. Every track is fun, fast paced, and a great electro/hip-hop mash up. I think the super catchy choruses were the tipping point, “Right Hand Hi”, “Life on TV”, “54321″ and now that I think of it probably every track is infectious. Maybe it doesn’t stand out as an album of 2010, but it has lots to like if you enjoy female vocalists going crazy to a good beat.
Kid Sister – Life On TV
Ever heard a song that says some stuff in French about speaking French and has a great easy-to-dance-to beat? It’s called Parlez-vous francais? Well FYI it’s by a band called Art vs. Science, you might have heard of them too. Does sarcasm work online? Well anyway, I had a chat to Dan Williams (drums) a couple of weeks ago because they’re playing Good Vibrations on the 14th of Feb (event site here). We chatted about their hectic touring schedule, the upcoming European tour and Mowgli’s comments about electro being dead! (Read it here). The full interview’s after the jump…
How was southbound?
Southbound was excellent, it was so much fun! We just got back late last night we stayed for the whole weekend. We’ve got used [...]
I was really worried when I walked into Ambar on Friday night, not because of any jungle creature that might attack me, but because of what I was hearing. In my interview with Mowgli (read it here) we talked about his sound being more minimal and how the Australian crowds had reacted well to it when he toured, now the warm-up dj, Ben Mac, was playing breaks, wobbly basslines and some electro thrown in for good measure. I’m not saying this didn’t work the crowd really well, as the club filled most people headed straight for the dancefloor but playing that kind of music before Mowgli was a bad idea. It really showed through the beginning of Mowgli’s set, because the tempo had decreased and people seemed disinterested. Never fear the man Mowgli had harnessed fire and he was able to bring the crowd back. Read the full review after the jump… [...]
You know that “other” feeling when you have experienced something truly awesome? You have spotted that the neighbour’s pool, braved a risky fence climb only to be rewarded by a cool refreshing dip and respite from the hot wheather. Unfortunately this great pleasure is tarnished by the fact that all you friends have decided it would be more wise to huddle around a pedestal fan and complain that it is hot. You end up getting pissed off (despite enjoying yourself) because they are missing out, and, of course the moment would be so much better if everybody could experience it, right?
Friday night Perth was invaded [...]
A few weeks ago (around New Years, hence the somewhat-dated beginning), I had the chance to catch up with a legend amongst turntablists and DJs alike – Z-Trip. It’s a sad fact that I’ve never actually seen a Z-Trip set, but I will most definitely be catching him at Good Vibrations (site here) in a couple of weeks. He was really cool to talk to and made some valid points for all the people out there hating on DJ Hero as a cheap exercise that’s gonna produce a lot of crappy wannabe DJs. It’s pretty long so kudos to you if you stick with it! As always whole interview after the jump.
Happy New Years dude what did New Years 09/10 entail for Z-Trip?
I think for any DJ New Years is kinda like the Olympics. You train for the gig, it’s usually the highest paying gig of the year so for me I was in Vegas and I have a residency so I was there doing my thing. The cool thing was the next day I got to get down DJ Jazzy Jeff we did a little two by four at my residency on Friday so it was really, really good – the best way to start off a new year.
