Perth love

I’ve been meaning to share these with you for some time… it’s a bit of local love. A disco house mix from Kyran Smith, a new remix from Alex Darkly and my favourite new remix from Moments. I know it’s a lot for one post, but trust me it’s worth your time. Have a browse through on your Friday afternoon/weekend.

Music interview

Bass Kleph

Bass Kleph is coming to play Tech Knights (info, tickets) next week and he’s become one of Australia’s best known tech-housr artists. Even though it’s not a genre I’d usually follow admittedly I’ve had the best time researching and listening to all things BK. I have a soft spot for a good hook, and some sweet ass popish vocals (see his track with Kid Massive and Chris Arnott below Everything Is Alright (Bass Kleph Remix). We had a pretty solid chat about the future of Bass Kelph and all things related to record labels and the American house scene, I highly recommend you read on for some pretty good opinions and knowledge of dance music. Full interview after the jump…

Hey man I read on twitter something went wrong in Geelong last week, what happened?

The crowd was really good and stuff they just didn’t have the right equipment!  [...]

Super sample session

Friday night was the most fun I’ve had in a long time, not only because I hadn’t been out in a while, but because I got to hear and see a load of stuff I wouldn’t usually seek out. From the funky sounds of The Brow Horn Orchestra, to Tom Thum’s amazing linguistic abilities to Sampology’s very nice visual monster mash. Everything went well together and it was great to see something different at Razar. Enjoy the promo for Sampolgy’s Visual Monster Mash Tour before you read on. Full review after the jump…

Amon Robin – ISAM

Artist: Amon Tobin

Album: Isam

Label: Ninja Tune

Release Date: Out now

Rating: 8/10

Ever more electronica for our ears, but once again it’s been enjoyable. Amon Tobin’s brand of electronica is intricate, emotion pours from every impeccably chosen sound. There are some really dark and creepy tracks like Goto 10, contrasted with breezy and light tracks like Wooden Toy. There’s a real magical quality to each track, the way that simple sounds can be place together to form some emotional value is pretty impressive. However, if you read the notes Amon has put on the full stream of the album (below) it takes a fair bit of the emotional magic away! It doesn’t detract from the fact that the whole album is well crafted, and enjoyable either for it’s technical skill or for it’s ability to use sound to create something more emotionally charged.

DISCODEINE

So this French duo has only just come to my attention as their debut self-titled LP is being released in Australia next week. And it’s awesome. You could describe it as nu-disco but there’s also so much more to it. It traverses through any number of genres, and the album is always surprising. Their love of ’80s horror/sci-fi shines on a couple of tracks and I love it. They even got Jarvis Cocker to sing on a track, which I’ve posted for you. Otherwise get more info and tunes here.

Amazing fucking Grace

I went to Blues and Roots to see one lady in particular, one lady who I’m glad I saw, Grace Jones. It’s not like I was an avid Grace Jones fan, who knew everything about her and loved every track, but I knew it was going to be some kind of spectacle and something worth seeing, so I listened to a few of her well known tracks and read a bit about her career, and it seemed worth while to at least have a look. I can’t stress how much it was worth it. From her costume, to her on stage antics to the songs themselves everything was both amazing and horrifying, full review after the jump…

P.S. if you wanna know what the fuss is about check her out on youtube, it’s too hard for me to pick the best video!

Let me take you down, cause I’m going to….

Rum is a terrible and wonderful thing. Consumption of a vast quantity of it on Friday night allowed me to have a brilliant time, however it left me feeling exceedingly rotten on Saturday when I was expected to review Creamfields at Claremont showgrounds. However, being the consummate professional that I am, I crawled out of the boot of my car and (following a short period of time passed out on the grass) began my journey to Perth’s winter dance music festival  [...]

Music interview

The Immigrant

The Immigrant is coming to play at Limelite’s Easter Show this Thursday night (event info). I had the pleasure of chatting to Jon a couple of weeks ago, and it was a really good honest and interesting chat. At the start if this interview all I knew about The Immigrant was that he did that song on the radio called Through The Wire, and he had some kind of interesting and odd past in some other unknown project, by the time we’d used up our fifteen minutes I’d gain a good appreciation for what Jon had done previously and were he was going with The Immigrant project, you can read it all after the jump…

I’ve gotta admit I don’t know that much about you, all I know is the track that I’ve heard on the radio, Through The Wire. How long has The Immigrant project been running?

The Immigrant has been around since, well not very long, maybe September last year, yeah it’s only a new one.  [...]

Round Table Knights

It’s almost Easter and almost time for Creamfields (tickets here). I had a chat with Marc Hofweber of Round Table Knights from Switzerland, who I initially confused with more banging Toolroom Knights. Fortunately I realised my error before the chat or things could have been awkward. Anyways Round Table Knights are much more disco-house stylings, so for a smooth groove at Creamfields definitely seek them out! As always break through to the other side for the full chat.

Congratulations on your album, how long were you guys working on it?

The album is kind of… we did it last year, it’s kind of like… it’s the finished product of everything we did last year. It’s like the actual work that we did on the album took from August to November. We had lots of studio time, we went to the studio every day and we took every sketch and every loop that we had to make it.
