Rekab – May Mix 09

Rekab (Myspace)

Hey Rekab! Okay so let us know how you got into djing? And how long have you been doing it?

Hello! Well I guess I first started trying to work out how to mix about 8 years ago. It all started with the Friday night rinses, which involved a bunch of us lads getting together and starting our weekend with a mix and a bunch of booze J . This eventually led into the urge to play out and I played my first gig out in 2005. My first dubstep gig was early 2007 at the Blender vip opening party.

Who are your favourite artists right now? And just in case this isn’t the same group of artists, the ones that are most influential to how you dj?

Dubstep production wise would have to be Benga, Skream, Joker, Jakes, Caspa, Rusko, LD, Mala, Coki, Tes La Rok and Head hunter to name a few.  N-type is definitely a big influence in my dubstep preference and dj style. Just quick mixes with big tunes basically. Drum and Bass wise is Break. The man can do no wrong, but other favourites at the moment are Spectrasoul, Survival, Icicle, Nymfo, Alix Perez, and just pretty much anything those lines that’s got a good rolling vibe.

I’ve looked at your myspace and most of your recent mixtapes are Dubstep are you moving away from Drum and Bass? And most of the acts you’ve been supporting recently have been dubstep too haven’t they?

Yeah Ive pretty much concentrated on djing dubstep out for the past couple of years now and I think the last dnb international support gig was Calibre back in 2007. I still love, buy, and mix dnb but thats mostly for Friday night rinse purposes. That said I have played recently at the dubstep vs drum and bass nights put on by The Cube which was good fun to play dnb out again.

If you’re doing production, or if you’re not for that matter, which way do you think you’ll go towards, dubstep or DNB? Or take it as it comes, and possibly end up in some completely different genre?

Production wise I only make stuff for fun really, both dnb and dubstep. As such I don’t really ever finish much stuff due to hardly having any time or probably motivation. But I would like to eventually like to finish some stuff that im happy with. We’ll see.

What’s the Perth scene like for dubstep? Already really productive or just growing now? And how does this affect your work?

The scene seems to be pretty healthy here in Perth but it has definitely blown up in the last 12 months I mean N-type did the count down at Origin! But with the Someone Say Dubstep gigs being quite regular now and more people seem willing to promote events its going really well and I think there are still a lot of people discovering the dubstep sound. I think once most people come out to a gig and experience it in a club they are quickly converted and this has also helped with its growth.
Can you tell us some other Perth based artists you’d recommend we seek out? (Sorry I know this is your interview, but it’s still related :P )

Kito is killing it production wise with a single already out on skreams label disfigured dubs and an EP forthcoming later in the year. She also tore up her first dubstep gig at The Big Rinse early this month supporting The Others, and Truth. Perth DNB producer Shockone also has a huge dubstep release on his latest ep which I like to call the Accadacca theme (Adachiaharas Theme) and this was at the top of digital dubstep downloads for a period so Perth is definitely doing Oz proud in the dubstep scene.

So back to your djing, other than playing with Dave Nada and Goth Trad at Ghetto Blaster what are your next set dates?

The next gig locked in after Goth Trad/Dave Nada is Kode 9, Harmonic 313, and Steve Spacek on Saturday 27th of June at Villa.  Watch out for a weekly dubstep show starting soon on RTRFM 92.1.

How else can we show you or support? Myspace, facebook…?

Best bet is www.myspace.com/rekab_baker or www.twitter.com/djrekab for any new mixes or gig info.

Hope you don’t mind a super short interview! Thanks heaps for your time too.

Cheers

Keep it Perth!
