Music interview

Horse Meat Disco

It’s on this friday and we got the interview! The biggest night of disco is coming to Perth this Friday at Connections (Event Post) to help us ‘rediscover old gems that are still great to dance to today as they were when they first came out.’ Jack’s interview is awesome drawing some really cool reponses, so I encourage you to read it all. And don’t forget to listen to the beats in space mix.

Beats in Space – HMD mixtape and tracklist

Horse Meat Disco (Myspace/website)

Can you start by telling us a little about HMD’s origins and what (or who) originally inspired you to start up the night?

We started horse meat disco in the same way that anyone else starts a club night really. We weren’t that excited with what was on offer on the gay scene in London which had become very mainstream, with a few notable exceptions of course, but nowhere that played the music that we really felt passionate about. I was working

Music interview

Pimp-Scrub

He’s headlining the tick tock room at SHAPE in under a week, and before you see his set you can get your hands on an interview and you’re also lucky enough to be able to get a very cool track, which I’ve really been enjoying playing on repeat since I found Pimp-Scrubs myspace, and now I have the track I’m sure that isn’t going to change. Keep your eyes on his myspace for more tracks in the future. You can read the full interview after the jump…

Pimp-Scrub – Throw Down

Pimp-Scrub (Myspace)

Hey Pimp-Scrub! Let’s start at the beginning of your djing/production career…What made you decide you wanted to get into producing music?

I have been producing on and off for nearly 8 years. Only seriously in the past year. The production

Music interview

H.O.S.H.

H.O.S.H. will be playing tonight @ Shape for their inaugural VIP Party. Known to his mother as Holger Behn H.O.S.H. happens to be one of my favorite 4/4 producers at the moment. His tunes are warm with what you may call soul, they can be deep builders like his remix of Oliver Koletzki’s “Music from the heart”, or be boppy house with a bit of a tough edge like his remixes of Nicones “Una rosa” and Mistress Barbra’s “Dance me to the end of love” which is on high rotation for me at the moment. He has had tracks out on Get Pysical, Paloma, Stil vor talent but is most closely associated with Diynamic, which also houses the likes of Stimming and Solomun and releases tunes of a consistently high quality, I strongly suggest you check the label out. And check out “Radar” a song H.O.S.H. produced alongside Stimming, one of my favorites.

A quick note on SHAPE VIP, its $20 gets you cheap entry to all gigs @ shape, discounted drinks and gets you in @ 9pm on VIP party nights (like tonight) for the “VIP treatment” which = free drinks and a door prize of a double pass to all the upcoming festivals (worth $2000) fuk I want that :-)

Buzzin’ Fly Radio (24/04/09) with a guest mix from H.O.S.H.

Back to the program… H.O.S.H. will be playing Melbourne, Perth, Auckland, Sydney and Brisbane as part of his tour and he was was kind enough to catch up with Perthquake from the comfort of his with an asparagus risotto in his tummy, and this is what he had to say:

What are some of your favourite albums of all time?
Michael Jackson – Bad and Thriller, all Jimi Hendrix, Ride – Going Blank Again, Faft Punk – Homework, Laurent Garnier – Unreasonable (live), Alex Under – Dispositivos De Mi Granja… there are a lot more, those are the ones immediately came onto my mind

How did you first get into dance music?
It first started with some acid and goa trance parties when I was 16 around hamburg. At that time the music on those parties wasn´t that overloaded as it was later in that genre which I never liked. It was more deep acid house. I preferred the sound that was more concentrated on the percussions and reduced on elements. This hypnotic monotonous feeling was what got me into techno. I loved the Massimo Vivona stuff at that time and a little later antonelli electric was my long time hero.

To pursue a career in electronic music is a big move, what are some of the big decisions you have had to make in your life/career? Have there been hard times? What do you think has led to your success?
Actually It was not a hard decision for me to decide to go on a full music career.

Classixx

Before you go to Easy Tiger (at SHAPE, starts at ten, 15 on the door) tonight there is one thing you need to do, read the interview with one half of Classixx, Tyler Blake. I’ve really got into Classixx over the past few weeks, and have really been enjoying their music, and there film clips :P . I’ll cya all at Easy Tiger tonight, don’t forget we’re also lucky enough to have Toy Selectah play, and a whole host of local talent. Classixx (Myspace)

Hey Classixx, Okay I always ask this question in my interviews and I¹m not going to stop now, how did you get into producing music?

We grew up playing in bands but always admired great production.  We both had Protools rigs to make demos for our bands after our bands broke up we got a chance to remix a few bands Mike

Shock One

Track on high rotation on triple j (Polygon, god I love that song atm, and I’m not a DnB person and cool art work too), two european tours, and a very talented live dj = Shock One, yet another super talented artist from Perth. I tried to catch Shock One’s set at The Bump last night but it was impossible to get in, proof of his popularity and talent, and kudos to The Bump boys! As usual Perthquake has been hunting for the interview, and as always an interview is what you get! Full interview after the jump

Shock One (Myspace)

Hey Shock One! I read on your myspace you were in a band with Rob & Gareth from Pendulum, how did you end up getting into DnB after starting off in a band?

All 4 of us in the band starting listening to Drum and bass around the same time (2000-2001). We were going to see acts like Bad company and Ed rush at gigs at xanadu and drum club, and all got really addicted to the sound. Looking back I can see why, when you compare the dynamics of metal and drum and bass, they are very similar.

And then when and how did your production begin?

Rob had been producing all sorts of electronic music since I’d known him

Music interview

LeGab

LeGab is one of Perth’s most talented producers, at the age of 18 he has been dabbling in production for 8 years, starting with a playstation game, and now producing tracks such as the two I’ve got for you today, which as a word up, are incredibly good on the ears. Both are a little different, proving LeGab is not one to be bound by genres, which is always exciting to see in an artist, no getting bored here! Read the full interview after the jump…

LeGab – for fear

LeGab – your souls inside

Hey Perth’s own LeGab! I think I read you’ve been ‘involved’ with music for a fair while and you’re only 18. Can you tell us about your music history and how you came to produce music, especially since your tracks on your myspace cover a few different genres?

I’ve been producing for about 8 years now all due to the sony playstation to be honest. My friend got some bootleg bali production gimmick game that we used to play every weekend making really bad commercial house. That was my first introduction to any form of musical composition, then

Alex Darkly Remix

I think you’re pretty lucky being able to get your hands on a very cool remix of Damn Arms’ Destination Pt. I. Local talent Alex Darkly has made me like this track! It’s a really fun remix to listen to far removed from the original, which for me is really enjoyable, especially the flute rework! Go to Alex’s myspace to hear more of his remixes.

As you already know The Toxic Avenger is playing this weekend at SHAPE, and we’ve been lucky enough to get an interview with the man behind the mask. Who’s enjoying the  reaction from australian crowds ‘who know songs I (The Toxic Avenger) can’t even remember. How cool are the creep looking girls in the video?! The full interview after the jump.

Music artist

Chris Fortier

Chris Fortier will be playing alongside N.A.S.A. this Saturday night @ SHAPE

Chris Fortier has been djing for over 15 years now and his name is one well known to those with an interest in underground house music and he was kind enough to have a chat with Perthquake on the eve his Australian tour from Melbourne Airport.

From its very early stages he has been involved in house music but “it was never a conscious thought or change to dance music sounds, but an evolution”. Chris Fortier was first introduced to the house sound circa 1987 as house records were played on his local college radio station “they were so fresh sounding that I had to seek it out more”.

What is your favorite way to start the day?

Wake up early, have nice big cup of coffee as the sun comes up, then go for a morning surf for a couple hours before heading to the studio to make some beats.
