He’s headlining the tick tock room at SHAPE in under a week, and before you see his set you can get your hands on an interview and you’re also lucky enough to be able to get a very cool track, which I’ve really been enjoying playing on repeat since I found Pimp-Scrubs myspace, and now I have the track I’m sure that isn’t going to change. Keep your eyes on his myspace for more tracks in the future. You can read the full interview after the jump…
Hey Pimp-Scrub! Let’s start at the beginning of your djing/production career…What made you decide you wanted to get into producing music?
I have been producing on and off for nearly 8 years. Only seriously in the past year. The production was a natural progression from the Djing.
Did starting to dj live happen at the same time?
I started Djing in 1997 under Frantik, last year I ceased playing Drum N Bass. After a short break from the djing I returned with Pimp Scrub.
Can you please describe what kind of music you make and tell us who the biggest influences are on what you create at the moment and in the past?
I use Frantik for my Dubstep productions now and Pimp Scrub is everything else Baltimore, Electro, Bassline house. I ‘m influenced by any good music, I know it sounds corny, but I listen to a lot from around the world and I may hear a part from a samba record, trumpet from a jazz tune it doesn’t matter. I hit a record fair a month back and picked up some gems, great for sampling.
Is there any particular sound you go for when you create a track or anything you have in mind when you start?
Not really, I go in and see what comes out. I usually start with the genre, and an idea
or sample and build it from there. Most of the time it steers toward the heavier sound.
So you’ve recently put up ‘Throw Down,’ what else have you been working on currently? Are you going to work towards an EP?
Lots! I have a few Dubstep collaborations on the go, they are almost completed.
For Pimp Scrub I have about 8 tunes near completion, a mix of Baltimore bassline house and electro. An EP is something I’m working towards.
You’re headlining Tick Tock on July 4th, what other dates do you have coming up?
That’s it at the moment. I only play out every now and then, which is fine by me so I can focus on studio time.
When it comes to playing live is there any one genre or artist you really like to play? And how often do you put in your own track, if I had my own tracks I’d definitely be playing them all the time!
I usually play a mix of Baltimore Bassline house and electro but at the moment I’m
big fan of Foamo. Its all still pretty new to me and is a big change from Drum N Bass!
In the future, definitely be playing a lot of my own tunes. The first lot of solo tunes is nearly complete, so it will be good to play them out and see what the response is!
Other than going to your shows how can we support you, myspace/facebook etc…?
Please check out my myspace pages, I will be updating them weekly.
