We have been getting very excited here at Perthquake about Deuce on August 7th (event post here), so we thought we would bring you some more info on what’s going to be on show, the fashion part in particular.

We caught up with Monica and Jess, the two up-and-coming fashion designers who are going to be parading their wares at Deuce, and we asked them a little about themselves and what they do:

What made you chose fashion design?

Jess: Short attention span. It’s a creative outlet that’s forever changing and challenging and isn’t limiting to one medium.

Monnica: The need to be constantly doing something different and a way to express creative ideas. I have always had an interest in illustrating, designing and sewing.

And if you had the chance, which three people in fashion would you most like to work with? And why?

Jess: Giles Deacon, his collections are always really different and exciting and have a bit of humour to them , which is always good to see in fashion. Martin Margiela is one of my favourites his concepts are always amazing and inspiring so it would be great to be a part of that. Also Alexander McQueen his shows are always opulent and it would be amazing to work on such a large scale project.

Monnica: Comme des Garcons, their concepts are something that have always been cleverly thought out and current. I really love the way they put the garments together in such a new way even though the garments are something of everyday wear. Undercover, the quirky whimsical mood they always create. Yoshi Yamamoto, similar style to Comme, clever design, inspiring silhouettes

Do you have any formal training in fashion design?

Jess: Yes, I’m currently studying at Central Tafe doing my Advanced Diploma in Fashion and Textile Design.

Monnica: I am also studying at Central Tafe and completing my Advanced Diploma in Fashion and Textile Design.

What are you working on at the moment?

Jess: My Graduation collection. My theme for my collection is protective fragility so it will be a collection that looks really armour-ish and strong and bold yet the fabrics are all quite fragile and soft.  The closer you inspect the garments the more fragile they are, ill also be using fragile objects to express this.

Monnica: Currently working on my graduate collection. My Ideas revolve around the theme of “A stretch of the imagination”. Im using stretch fabrics that each have different properties. Im playing around with the idea of a memory always being stretched into something new everytime a story gets told and re-told. It’s a cluster in the mind.

Can you tell us something about what you’re going to be showing/doing at Deuce?

Jess: Im going to be showing a few garments which ive made over the years at tafe.  So it will probably show a little bit of progress that ive made during study and maybe a little bit of a glimpse of whats to come.

Do you have any other exhibitions/shows coming up that we should know about?

Jess: Just our graduation parade on the 23rd November at his majesties theatre.

Monnica: As above

And finally…what do want to end up doing with fashion? Is it just for fun or you’re looking to make a career out of it?

Jess: Hopefully some form of career will come out of this.  I  think I still have a lot to learn about working in the industry so I’d like to begin by working for someone else. Eventually one day I would like to create my own label/ company though

Monnica: I would really like to work for a company or a designer who is already well established. Any job in the industry would be a great start.

Well there it is. Make yourself seen at Deuce.
