Have you heard about Faux Pas? Well you should have! Faux Pas is a fresh new Perth fashion label with alot to offer. Matt and Andy are the creative minds behind the label, bringing you t-shirt designs that are a little edgy with a splash of neon. I had a quick chat with the boys about the creation of the label and where to find it, so make sure you have a read.

What compelled you two to start Faux Pas, and what is it all about?

Matt: “For me it was about being able to actually put my ideas on a “canvas” – in this case, t-shirts. It was about designing something which people would get excited about and developing a brand which would stay true to it’s merits. I always hated how you would find a new label, wear their stuff, and then before you know it the brand has gone mainstream and they’re stocked in every retail franchise, and every second person is kicking around in it. I was tired of walking into a club or bar and seeing the same thing worn by everyone, so I figured why not create something new, keep it relatively exclusive …and then call it Faux Pas! The best thing about Faux Pas is that Andy and myself dont take ourselves too seriously (hence the definition of “Faux Pas”), we are open to criticism and will always accept compliments, but most importantly we’re here for a good time and we really enjoy what we do!”

Andy: “Its really all about creation and a bit of fun. Faux Pas is like a growing child, Matty and I plan out its future and it still ends up doing whatever the hell it wants to…. Thats whats so great about business in general, no matter where we had envisaged the label at this point in time it has gone somewhere which has completely surpassed our expectations. The best part about it is that its a fashion label which couples this sense of the mysterious with our desire to keep it real and have generally awesome times… “

Apart from the launch party, is there anything else Faux Pas related on your calendar that Perth people should know about?

Matt: ”The boys from ML Denim are keen to organise a big launch party here in Perth sometime later in 09 for them, which they said they want us to be apart of… so who knows, might be around the same time we release our summer range… Ive seen footage from the shows they’ve put on in QLD and Melbourne, and they certainly aim to impress and do a good job of it, so that is certainly something we’d be keen to get involved with!”

Andy: “We have actually just organised to do a runway showcase of some of our pieces along with Lauren from ‘She Said Yoo Hoo’ at the Politix/Myer Basement ’End of Financial Year’ Party. Details are still being finalised at this point but it’s going to be held at Palais 85 (Formerly Meads Oyster Bar – South Perth) towards the end of July. Tickets are $50 each and all proceeds go to charity – so it should be an enjoyable and beneficial night for all involved. We have also found Perth to be a breeding ground of amazing talent so we’re interested in organising fashion shows for up and coming Perth labels. One of the hardest things about starting up is getting exposure, so we figure if we can organise a show with a handful of other labels, stage it in a popular venue and generate bulk interest then we think we’d have at the very least an awesome night out and a great way to help give smaller labels another way to showcase their talents. Its really just about being able to help out your peers and develop our respective labels collaboratively… ”

How can the people of Perth keep supporting you?

Matt: “haha by buying Faux Pas! We are actually pretty ovewhelmed by the amount of support thus far but just by spreading the word and sharing our excitement would help us a lot. Come to the launch party and have a good night and If you see us out and about definetly come and say hi, we’re always keen to meet new people.”

Andy: “The support has been incredible and a large part of the excitement factor for us personally is in seeing how excited other people are for Faux Pas. Its awesome just knowing that people out there are liking what we’re about and what we’re producing. We’re always out and about and love meeting new people so I couldnt think of any greater support to come say hey and share a beverage with us, we’d be honoured…”

A bit off topic: whats your favorite song at the moment?

Andy: “Foreign Land” – Eskimo Joe – Love what these lads have put together over the years, yet another example of amazing Perth talent!

Matt: “Parlez Vous Francais” by Art vs. Science – I saw these guys at the recent We Love Ministry of Sound festival and they totally tore the place to shreads – it was awesome!
