On Friday night Perth said “Benvenuto!” to Mike Simonetti at Republic as headlining feature of the “love saves Friday”. Known as one of the co-founders of the label “Italians do it better” based in New Jearsey, known for its “neo-Italo-disco and cosmic dance” variety, Mike Generously paid us a visit before a stint of sets over East.
The night itself I felt was more substance not spectacle compared recent “SixThousand and Bourgeois Bogan” events eg. Horse Meat Disco, Love Saves opening party deserve particular mention. It seems as though on the night people needed no distraction from the solid prowess offered by the bill.

At 12 o’clock an understandably jet lagged Mike Simonetti crept into the both whirred into a surprisingly eclectic mix. Somewhat more up-tempo than I expected but gauging the moderated yet boisterous crowd this seemed to be a natural decision.

Instead of being taken for a ride into the unknown I felt that the set itself clung to familiarity a little too much at first. With selections such as the recent “mind dimension by Tiga” and a rather unusual remix of Chris Isaac’s wicked games.

The thing that really irked me (and seems to always do at Republic) was that after a good portion of the crowd filed through the door at 11:30-12:00 it still seemed to end abruptly only 2 tracks into Mickey Juice’s closing set at measly 2:30am. I can’t really blame the venue, of course but I find it a little embarrassing that people are already thinking of bed or the early morning “play list” fuelled stumble orgy at Amplifier.

Never the less there is unyielding proof that the Disco scene is really emerging in this town of diluted dance floors. I just hope we can continue getting spoilt with quality acts.
