Royalty Rolls In

Last night I was pressed for time and had to drive from Mandurah to Freo to catch His Majesty Andre (HMA) play, and the long drive was worth it. I was afraid I’d miss some of his set, but I caught the end of Moe Steez and Master Dash warming up the crowd with plenty energy and blog tracks. When HMA hit the decks at 12.30 he played a little intro song and then got straight in Positif, god I love that track! He slowly worked his way through heaps of club and bass music, like Herve, Sharslayer, Dance Area, CLS – Can You Feel It (I don’t know this track that well, was this a big one at sometime?) Major Lazer – Pon De Floor, possibly my favourite track at the moment but maybe second to His Majesty’s track Peep Thong, which he played so I was happy. Before his set ended he was able to play Bad Boy For Life, I think that made my night! The most impressive part of  HMA’s set was his ability to pick songs that could keep people dancing even if you didn’t know the track. I think with bass and club music this is the hardest thing to do, you can scare people away easily if it gets to heavy without something familiar, I’m not really sure what ‘familiar’ is though, it might be sirens, and the use of brass instruments in tracks, that seems popular at the moment and when you hear them it reminds you of really big popular tracks. Pseudo-psychology aside, it was a night worth attending and worth an hours drive to get there.

We Met Last Night

This photo had to be edited to fit the Perthquake site, so it’s not a good indication of the quality of all of the pictures taken, so go to the site to see how good they really are! The man behind We Met Last Night is a non-stop party machine at every good Perth party, getting some of the best shots there are in the business, I heard about some at Peaches that no other photographer will have, and that’s from the trusted Perthquake Photographer, so you know it’s true! And he’s been helping out perthquake too, so this is more of a props post to him! Keep your eyes peeled though, because he’s been helping out with something you want. Peaches DJ Set @ Capitol (Knowledge Music)

There’s always an air of uncertainty when you go out to see an artist perform a DJ set who is not known for their DJing first and foremost. Would the Peaches DJ set see the singer stumble through a bunch of well known ‘of the moment’ dance tracks with her own tunes forced between? Or would she be an example of an artist who has actually grasped the intricacies of playing tunes for a crowd?

Peaches was definitely more so the latter, she had solid DJing abilities, particularly for someone who isn’t known for them, her track selection was eclectic yet she still maintained a good flow and energy throughout. The variety in the set was pretty refreshing with Peaches working Slayer, The Proxy, and Rye Rye into her set as well as a selection of her own tunes. All done with the finesse that you would expect of someone with the artistic integrity of Peaches.

Capitol managed to pack out exceptionally well with hardly room to move amongst the mess of bodies on the lower level. Peaches entertained the crowd not only with the tunes she played but pausing to hop on the mic and pour champagne on people. The set cumulated at the end with Peaches inviting a healthy portion of the crowd onto the stage with her despite stern protest from the security staff!

Knowledge Music have to be commended on bringing out Peaches for a DJ set whilst she’s in Australia, and they were deservedly rewarded with an impressive and highly enthusiastic audience. Maybe this will signal the start of more weekday international guests stopping by Perth on their way to the East Coast for the weekend.

Pase Rock & PhDj @ Shape

What: Pase Rock, PhDj, Kit Pop, Hickey, Selekt

Where: Shape

When: 17 October 2009

Cost/Ticket details: 20, shape, door sales if available

Last time Pase Rock turned up to Shape I remember a very very very busy club. I think this will be no exception. Hip-hop. electro indie all rolled into one. And PhDj sounds like he’d be a Shannon Fox/Sleater Brockman kind of Dj, which I’m really getting into at the moment, I love the ‘play a bit of everything’ house party kind of Dj, as long as they do it smoothly. Mickey Juice and I decided without the smoothness it loses lots of credibility.

Music interview

Mumdance

Playing tomorrow night at Easy Tiger is a heavy bass specialist, works with some of the world’s best producers and artists, and is creating a new genre of music, the interview explains all! (I’m always trying to find out about attitudes toward genres, this way I can build up a good argument against Perth Dj, JackAttack). Go down to Easy Tiger to catch Mumdance play, who I’m sure will have a large array of music for your ears enjoyment. Full interview after the jump…

Mumdance (Myspace)

I’m sorry this interview is so late! Haha perthquake hasn’t been the most organised at the moment. We’ll start at the beginning… What got you into producing music?

Just having a love for music and wanting to be involved with music in every way possible, it seemed

The Bump feat. Roxright & Fucking Midas @ Bar Open

What: Roxright, Fucking Midas, Mickey Juice, Bad Weather

Where: Bar Open

When: 23 September 2009

Cost/Ticket details: 5, door sales only

Here’s a night with THREE perthquake writers! If I could just con Bad Weather into doing something then it’d be a perthquake party, and I could try and steal some credit for one of Perth’s best nights. Get down to see a multi genre night that will open your ears to the talent in Perth.

Congorock @ Limelite

What: Congorock, Zelimir, Master Dash, Moe Steez

Where: Metros (Freo)

When: 16 October 2009

Cost/Ticket details: 15, door sales

As Limelite have said, there is something in the water in Italy, and as His Majesty Andre said, now that we’ve found a few good artists to break the ice I’m sure the world will be ready to bring more as Mike Simonetti’s label says, Italians Do It Better (NB mike simonetti is unrelated to Congorock, HMA, Crookers and Bloody Beetroots). Limelite continues to bring in big name Italian artists who have some of the coolest tracks floating around the blogosphere, and Runark is one of the best.

Japan 4 feat. Kid Kenobi @ Ambar (Boomtick)

What: Kid Kenobi, Buda, Philly, Prizzy, Wish

Where: Ambar

When: 26 September 2009

Cost/Ticket details: $15 Door Sales, Presale @ Boomtick Shop

Kid Kenobi has spent the last five years taking on the world, returning more victorious each time. The more he travels, the better he gets, the more he gets booked, the more he travels (you know where we’re going with this!).

It’s been a year since we’ve seen Kid Kenobi solo at Ambar so *warning* – it’s bound to be a wall-to-wall four-to-the-floor night out, so be there. Whatever it takes.

Samson versus speakers

What the hell was wrong with Capitol’s sounds system on friday night? Almost every bass hit from both Sam La More and Sidney Samson was followed by a very frustrating ‘crack.’ Both of their sets were really good, some of the coolest mashups I’ve heard in ages, Sam did a good cross of Sweet Dreams and his remix of Walking on a Dream, but but the best one was Thriller with Pnau’s Baby. I do have to admit though, Michael Jackson and Eurythmics tracks are really not pushing it for me that much,
