Once again Knowledge Music has put on another great event consisting of nothing more than drum & bass, dubstep, hip-hop, and rap. With so many great artists performing at the LOW:FI festival, it was hard to stay in one place at any one time. The Deen venue was turned into a sweat pit packed with floor shaking dubstep from Zed Bias and Excision. Even upstairs had their fare share of basslines with Rekab playing a back-2-back with Kito. On the main stage, Chali 2NA and TC & Jakes were doing what they do best, consisting of putting on a great warm-up show for all attendees anxious to see what they came for, NaS.
Throughout the whole performance, NaS delivered to his fullest with his live band performing hits from all his successful albums. Although he did not sing his tracks the whole length through, each breakdown led to another crowd moving bomb which kept the entire show energizing and alive. It was definitely one of the best live performances I have seen up to date and i’m sure plenty of others will agree.

So this post is being done without me knowing anymore than you. Well I know Sexy is a regular night with Boy Crazy Stacey, JackAttack and Petros Rhythm Machina, but other than that I know no more… except there’s a big international coming and if you join the facebook group you will find out more!

What: Clark
Where: The Republic
When: 6 November 2009
Cost/Ticket details: TBA
Hearing Clark’s tracks is very exciting, he’s on Warp, the label of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, some of the coolest experimental electronica artists there are. For me, this is incredibly exciting music, it’s so all over the place, kind of like my writing, and I think that’s what draws me to it, I don’t know what to do! Just go have a listen to the tracks on his myspace.

Resident Dj for Bugged Out and cofounder of London club Nag Nag Nag, even if that doesn’t mean much to you her background is nothing but epic, being played and gaining the attention of massive Djs, going back and learning how to use old analog synths for production, and still finding time to tour round the world and bring a party. Check her mixes to see if she’s for you…

I think we’ve already seen them a couple of times this year, and as far as I’m concerned they brought a party to Shape both times. As you may know Bang Gang 12″s have been around since 2005, and has released tracks for Shazam, KIM, Nicky Van She and Muscles. Their latest compilation is out, so they’re coming round to celebrate! I just read on their website they did a mix for Dj Hero?… still investigating but here’s the link from their site all the same.

Seth Sentry is playing this Saturday night at The Rosemount thanks to Flow Lab (event info here). Like I’ve said before you should have heard Seth’s track Simple Game on the js, it’s on the high rotation list, so he’s an artist with lots of national support. Aleksia got to chat up with him last Friday for an extended chat, and we thank her for this (she’s sick at the moment, hence I’m putting the post up
) I think my favourite bit is when they have a laugh about ‘Folk-hop,’ another one of these ‘new’ genres! haha

So you’re coming back to Perth?
Yeah, that’s right. I’m coming back in October
I arrived pretty late on Saturday night but got the end of Travis’ set, it was a speaker exploding, heavy hitting electro/techno wall of sound. Everyone seemed to love it! Not sure how happy the speakers were, but they held up. The crowd was a little thin, but just like Friday night they stayed on the dancefloor and were very pleased with Dj Hell’s set. Probably not so pleased with the number of photographers, Headswillroll pointed out that you smile for the first one then indifference follows!
Although I don’t know much about techno Hell’s set was one that almost anyone could dance to, it had that amazing flow a techno set can have, with peaks and troughs giving you the breather when you need it, and then blasting the bass into your body so you dance again, literally at one point I could feel the music bouncing in my body (no drugs taken, pure sound). Like I said I don’t know much about techno, but lucky my phone was able to tag what I think were my two favourite tracks, Because of You (Michel Cleis Remix) – Skunk Anansie, and Addiction (Wutan & J-Break Vs. Dj Ideal) – Mochico & FREDj, are these even techno tracks, and if they are are they really cheesy?! I enjoyed myself and think if you didn’t go you’re crazy for missing out on a legend of techno.
Does that title work with Feadz, I mean is it too far from his name to get to that title? There was a superb contrast of sets from Feadz and Boy 8-Bit on Friday night. Feadz did what Ed Banger artists do best, distorted, crackling, gyrating electro. His set included lots of spin backs, dead stops and changes of BPM. Despite the small crowd he still threw everything at the set, bopping around and using the mixer to it’s full potential. Boy 8-Bit played one of the more traditional perfectly mixed sets with lots of bass for good measure. There was one standout moment in his set (I’m not sure if I’ll have this exactly right), he made a loop of a beat, then put some delay effect on it and then it was like the sound of a train going along, you know the da-dun, dun-dun sound? And then mixed it in to another track, essentially it sounded really cool, whatever he did!
As I already alluded to the crowd was pretty small, at first I was really disappointed, and even thought it might have been cancelled when I didn’t see lots of cars around Villa. In the end it was really refreshing seeing a crowd who were there to listen to the music, and have a dance. Almost every person who was there stayed on the dance floor, and stayed until the last few minutes of Boy 8-Bit’s set. And more importantly everyone seemed to be having a good time, and it had a really friendly fun atmosphere. I still had a really good night, and got some pictures, I had to be photographer too, yeah thanks Holly!
As you may have noticed the recent Hottest 100 of all time did not include one female artist, which absolutely blows my mind because as the Hummingbird crew have pointed out, there are so many high profile, talented and successful female artists. Anyway they thought they would run another top 100, but this time just of female artists. They also encourage you to put in your top ten, I know I’d have Karen O, Bjork, and PJ Harvey in there, not sure which songs though, that’s where it gets tough! Head to the website to have your say…
