Sonic boom

Yesterday began with a small pre-stereosonic drinks session at the new Perthquake house (Troy, I didn’t tell you about this but I think for convenience your house should be rented out to the members of Perthquake instead of being your house. Hope that’s okay?) When we turned up we walked straight passed a girl on a stretcher (it was 2.30pm) and Shazam claimed that his amazing dj set had sent her into a trance like state, now I feel like quite the fool for missing it! After a few minutes of knightlife dealing with a small crowd Dragonette hit the stage, for 20 minutes! That was pretty disappointing, but they played Take It Like A Man, and they threw some Justice into one of their tracks, so although it was super short, it was still good.

I didn’t go watch Hudson Mohawke, so yes I didn’t get my cool on (here’s a good point to say I probably should have gone to see them because I think I heard dubstep nearly all day and a break would have been nice!), instead I wondered toward Renaissance Man, and caught the end of Ajax, who does do very good blog house dj sets. Including crowd favourite Parlez-vous Francais? and managing to put in every djs favourite track, Positif. Ajax ended with, or Renaissance Man started with one of the most heavy dubstep tracks I’ve heard. I did leave to get food, and with the way the sound was set up I can’t be certain I heard this but… I’m sure the Sharkslayer remix of  Pobum Coco was played. This is my favourite wobbly bouncy track. Whilst on the issue of not knowing what was being

They’ve arrived

It comes as no surprise that the Destination? 6th birthday at the villa proved to be quite a party!! While the crowd numbers had nothing on the Stanton Warriors gig there the week prior, this just set the stage for an intimate party vibe and was in no way a disappointment. People were spread all among the Villa maze making it look quite sparse initially.. More people started to filter in as Pete from Signal Drivers effortlessly blended tough tech house and got everyone ready for what was to come. Next up was the infamous Baby Gee from Qld filling the place with his big room house sound. The decision was then made to close the upstairs portion of the venue and this was timed perfectly, bringing all the crew together prior to the main act going on.
Rico tubbs went on and created mayhem on the dancefloor as the punters lapped up every minute of his trademark fusion of big basslines, rave synths, 4/4 and broken beats. While it was still by no means a packed house, the vibe was electric and everyone had room to get their dance on and it became clear that it was actually a great decision to have the event there and not at Ambar which has been home to the Destination? parties of days gone by. A-Jam from Melbourne and one of Perth’s favourite locals, Philly Blunt took over from the Finish maestro and went back to back to close the night out for the remaining groovers in fine style.. Another top night by the Destination? crew, showing exactly why and how they have been able to keep their nights going for all this time.

Born from the sewers of milan and munich a strange breed of noise could be heard from the rooftops and iron girdled basements, expired through dance perspiration steaming out through the cracks, born from the futurists noise/dance machines and mechanized as the bastard child of art and pop… The question still remained could DaDa Dance?

Music interview

Drop The Lime (Stereosonic)

Trouble & Bass front man Drop The Lime took the time to answer some of my questions! Yay! I got to find out about Trouble & Bass itself and as always what Drop The Lime thinks of illegal downloads. I love asking the illegal download and dj equipment questions, if you’ve read most of the interviews there have been some semi-consistent views, but often the reasons are very different. (Oh and he was in a choir with Alicia Keys! WTF how awesome/crazy is that). Anyway get your Drop The Lime on and read the full interview after the jump…

Drop The Lime (Myspace)

Why the two projects Curses and Drop The Lime?

Drop The Lime is my main focus, while Curses! Is an alter-ego for the spookier house like take on club music.

Music interview

Alter Ego (Stereosonic)

Roman has been in the electronic music scene since the late 80s and forming Alter Ego in 1991 with Joern, he’s been to and played at the infamous 24 hour parties, which began in Frankfurt and have spread all through Germany (so they didn’t start in Berlin, where they are now well known). Anyway there were usual mishaps but everything is explained after the jump. I’ve also got Rocker streaming, I think it’s the Alter Ego track you might know!

Alter Ego (Myspace)

As always I do something wrong and we end up with some kind of general mishap at the start of an interview…

Music interview

Bag Raiders (Stereosonic)

Perthquake took a large leap up in the world of journalism a few months ago, I did a phone interview with Bag Raiders, who I might add are playing this Sunday at Stereosonic. After having a chuckle about being on the phone to Mr Jack Bag Raiders, the international calling person was very precise in what they wanted to convey, I Mr Will Scott Perthquake got into finding out about some bag raiders history… you can listen to the new track whilst reading!

Bag Raiders (Website)

How did you and Chris meet and start producing music?

We went to high school together, I was in the year above Chris, and

Music interview

Knightlife (Stereosonic)

This Sunday is Stereosonic! And guess what… here’s an interview that I did with Knightlife, a fellow genre resenting individual who’s dj set philosophy is plain and simple, wonder what the hell I’m on about? Well read the full interview after the jump… and make sure you get hold of Knightlife II!

Knightlife (Myspace)

Hey Knightlife! Okay we’ve got to start with a standard Perthquake question. Who or what go you into producing music?

I’ve always been interested in music ever since a was a kid. I was studying

Music interview

Rico Tubbs

Next Friday night is Destination?’s 6th birthday party (info here) and Rico Tubbs is coming to make the dancefloor bounce with his infectious beats. Another one of Finland’s fine artists alongside my favourites Sharkslayer and Top Billin.’ I asked about Finland’s music scene, his last tour and my question of the moment on downloading music illegally. When I asked about whether he was going to work on an album Rico said that ‘albums are pretty much an obsolete format’ which I think I’d have to agree with because they just don’t seem to be done that often in electronic music. Go read the full interview after the jump…

Rico Tubbs (Myspace)

In Finland is your genre of music popular?

Well I play stuff from various genres so its bit hard to define but the music scene in Finland is very active – theres lot of club music
