Troy and I decided to start a new kind of review, well Troy thought of it and then I said that sounds like a good idea. It’s a David and Margaret style review. According to Josh from Shape I’m Margaret, but I’ve just left my name as Will for simplicity. Overall we had a really good night, all four dj sets we heard were different and the crowd seemed to enjoy the variety too. Don’t forget the Bang Gang 12″ record is out now. Full review after the jump…
Will: Well we could start with the support act Thunderclaps, I really liked Roland’s set, I don’t think shape gets to see such a cool mix of indie and electro very often.
Troy: Yeah I also dug it, love good indie/electro but yeah you’re right there’s not a whole lot of it going around at the moment. That A-Trak remix of Heads Will Roll gets kids on the d-floor like no man’s business. Unfortunately I was in heavy photog mode for that stage and didn’t take any notes on any other tracks but I remember dancing.
Will: Yeah, that’s what he ended with wasn’t it? Just before that he played Boom Boom (Deadmau5 remix) by Out Here Brothers, I love that track. Nothing like ‘90s fun. I know he played Baltic Pine by boy 8-bit at the start, it was annoying me lots because I couldn’t remember the name of the track.
Troy: That was his first set in like 6 months you were saying??
Will: Yeah it was, he and Nick had been really busy with uni. So there wasn’t much time for DJing, but it was good to see them back. Well one half was back I think Nick was sick.
Troy: Cool, I have to briefly mention MUV playing Excision – Swagga to close out his first set. That guy loves his heavy dubstep. I love electro and I’m really starting to get into dubstep so I was really digging his mixing of the two. So heavy. Especially after Bang Gang.
Will: Yeah is that the transformer song?
Troy: That’s Excision again it’s called Boom, sooo heavy and he mixed it into Kavinsky – Testarossa Autodrive. I was pretty much happy to go home after that it was well cool.
Will: His stuff is always heavy you’re right. But he played a stack of heavy stuff I really like it though. He kept a fair few tracks in there that people might know like that digitalism track I want I want. Yeah it was a good close set!
Will: I think there’s that kind of audience at Shape. I go there and I like lots of different stuff, so it’s pretty cool to hear three different kinds of electronic music from three different DJs in a night
Troy: True that, which I guess leaves us with the main event. It was a heavier set than I expected from Doom and Hoodrat.
Will: Yes I was just about to say that! What I’ve got down is tracks like AA 24/7 and Mind Dimension. Hey what’s the name of that track that has a guy and a girl talking and the guy is wanting the girl to do stuff and she’s always pointing out that he’s just trying to get into her pants? It sounds like Tiga.
Troy: I’m not sure hey I know they played their remix of Shoes, surely not two Tiga songs haha.
Will: Well that’s what I wrote down, but that’s why I was wondering! Haha It was that really crazy remix of Mind Dimension though, I think the Soulwax one. And maybe it’s okay if they’re two really different songs in the end, even if they are both by Tiga
Troy: I do remember they played that Proxy remix of Home Zone by Digitalism. I’ve noticed that in a few different sets.
Will: So there was Proxy in there too! Alex pulled me onto the dancefloor and I thought it sounded like Proxy, but then I think it might have gone into Mind Dimension so I was quite confused. This is a really good way of sorting out what the hell happened in my night!
I think the only time people didn’t really stay on the dancefloor was toward the end of their set when they did those really slowed down few tracks. They slowly built it back up though and claimed some people back!
Troy: Yeah it got pretty mellow and it felt quieter at the end too. I was really expecting just a pretty light, fun party set at the start with Pon De Floor (I swear that’s a set pre-requisite these days), Fix Your Accent and I think the Kris Menace remix of Shooting Stars. They also snuck in Nil By Mouth by Bag Raiders which is probably my favourite track off their first EP. Oh and that awesome remix of Great Southern Land haha.
Will: Yeah Pon De Floor is definitely the prerequisite haha! I did enjoy the set though. And it was a pretty steady crowd, so I’d rate it as a high success considering only one uni has finished exams! Right I’m outta here, damn work, I’d much rather just talk about music
Troy: Yeah I wonder what happened to Ladyhawke too??
Will: Hey yeah, I forgot about that! Maybe wasn’t too happy with her set or something!?
Troy: Yeah. Oh well you’re right I reckon it was a pretty solid crowd all things considered. And good tunes to boot.
Will: Agreed! I had a fun night, you got some good photos and we got to dance. And there was that crazy girl too! Haha yes I got that in J.
Troy: She will be pleased haha see you later dude.

Sounds like an awesome night, wish i was there!
So you didn’t enjoy it then?! Or ‘you weren’t there’ as in another not there?!
Wait you’re not the Alex I thought you were! hahaha sorry Alex, a little mix up
Of course I was there Will =]
What… do you have two usernames?! haha man you’re confusing the hell outta me right now. You’re doing a Perrin, where I just don’t know what’s going on as soon as you open your mouth!
I have a few as I like to mix things up.
wow i was like whoa 6 comments our tag team review got a really good response. but no, its just the perthquake guy spamming his own shit! hahaha :p
haha yep, don’t worry no one ever comments. Maybe people don’t know how? It’s awesome having comments though, it’s a great way to chat about stuff like a forum, but it just flows on the bottom of an article! There we go spam number 8 i think?
i will comment! it was an awesome night of talent. i must say bang gang did play a little heavier stuff than i expected, but they were great
. i didnt see Thunderclaps but heard great things. MUV was really good, im loving this dubstep stuff! at first i thought what is this crap, but now im lovin it! What a night…
Yeah I feel the same at the start of most nights, I look around and go ‘this is going to be crap’ then it gets really good by the end. Maybe I compare the beginning of each night to the end of the last, so it never seems
as good!
