Before I get into the details of Friday night, I did enjoy my time, but if you just read the first part it’s not going to sound so great… I rocked up at about 11, so that was an hour after opening and there were maybe 20 people in the whole place, and Villa is massive, but people did slowly pour in and by the end of Beni’s set there were a couple of hundred people hanging round. The biggest problem was, they were all out smoking, there would be 10 minutes of people inside, then 20 minutes of them outside, even those who were laughing at this occurrence soon succumbed to the temptations of the smooth refreshing taste of a death stick (haha sorry man I had to mention that, I think it was quite witty).
I wasn’t too impressed by either Beni or K.I.M.’s sets, sorry guys. I’m sure the lack of crowd didn’t help and there wasn’t much motivation to play the best set ever, but still disappointing. Beni had a couple of train wreck mixes. I didn’t even hear him play Maximus, which surprised me, but I did hear My Love Sees You, and the A-trak remix of Heads Will Roll, which he said he was going to play (here).
K.I.M. played what I expected, a heavy tech set, like what his album is I suppose, but no one was on the dancefloor, so I was surprised he didn’t play something else. I think that gets to one of those core things about djing, do you play what you want to play, even if the crowd doesn’t seem to care, or do you play a different set? I liked what he played, but then I like electronic music, full stop, so I was interested to hear it. I don’t think most of the crowd was like me so it ruined the set.
Thankfully, LA Riots came on at 2, and instantly things changed, maybe everyone had exhausted their lungs with smoke, so where ready to hit the floor, not literally though. It was only ½ of LA Riots(just Daniel), but it didn’t matter, the dance floor was full and people were enjoying the set. He started with Animal, put in Black and Blue soon after, had Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, Ting Tings, Mr Oizo, Shark Attack (thanks troy:) ), and only got heavy in the last 30 minutes with some Major Lazer and Bloody Beetroots. It was a good night of contrast where the crowd reacted to what they wanted and although it was pretty thin most stayed until 4 and it made for some fun dancing toward the end. So it was a Perth Riot, it just took a while to get going!

what can i say i like to be ironic. or is that moronic. gahhhhhh *shakes fist*
It’s not moronic! I don’t have a problem with smoking, like I said I like the smell. And a cigarette every now and then isn’t going to be the death of you! Maybe if your smoking them regulalry, but once and a while is okay! But it was pretty funny!
*sight* those Villa types don’t know what’s what.. I would have danced to K.I.M.
Nice review.
Considering you listen to disco atm, I’d be pretty surprised to see you dance to a heavy techno set! haha jj
You know I didn’t hear him play wet n wild, or party machini or fistogram. And they’re three tracks I’m pretty sure are on the album aren’t they? And they’ve been his most popular tracks!
yeah they were the modular singles in Australia i think, but up until then he had been putting out stuff on Rallye in Japan, plus Selected Jerks has a far bit of previously unreleased stuff on it.
…by the way, i’m allowed to listen to more than two genres of music ok??!! you should have seen me in my loungeroom after getting Selected Jerks, i was dancing like it was 2006.
Yeah but it still has those tracks on it, so I thought he might play them at least. It’s kinda like when bands tour and they play their album stuff. It’s much more crowd friendly.
I’m just hassling you about your music tastes. You might have danced to that stuff, but you never attend the gigs anymore! That’s why I’m giving you shit hahaha because you’ve gone all sissy on me! jj hehehe
It’s crap that we only get one half of the LA Riots. Their show is so much more interesting when they both play. Lots of mash-ups and fast cuts, crazy genre changes.
Man that sucks then. I presumed the two would be better. I’m not sure if he is even on tour too?! If he is then we got ripped off in Perth!
Only one came to Australia. The other guy didn’t come to Australia for last years tour either, so maybe he doesn’t like to leave the US or something.
Really. that’s quite bizarre if they do sets together at home.
I did some reading and it is a money thing. Daniel normally does the touring and the other guy Jo(sp?) stays in LA and does remix/production work, that way they can play lots of gigs and still make money from remix work. When I caught them in NYC that was the first time they had both played together outside of LA.
You’re a good investigator Alex! Thanks for clearing that up
