Brazil’s biggest electronic musical export drops into Perth for round two of Democracy Live @ Geisha

Anyone who attended the Democracy 2nd Birthday at Geisha last year will know that they witnessed a set by Audion that was something special, Democracy now seek to recreate that when they present a special live set from Gui Boratto.

Gui Boratto

After sending a two track demo to Kompakt in 2005, Gui shot to prominence with the release of 12 inch ‘Arquipélago’ on K2, catalyzing a number of well received singles on labels such as Audiomatique, Plastic City and Kompakt’s Pop imprint.
Infusing a much needed dose of colour amidst the monochrome minimal landscape, his 2007 debut album ‘Chromophobia’ drew unanimous critical praise and sparked an avalanche of distinct productions and remixes.

With a style characterized by a combination of blissful pop sensibilities and complex dance floor arrangements, Gui soon developed a distinct aesthetic profile, aided by the live arrangement of his favorite tracks on the ‘Addicted’ compilation released on Platipus in 2007

As Brazil’s premiere techno export, Gui has developed a reputation for his relentless touring schedule, and has graced the stage of the most prominent clubs and festivals in the electronic music sphere both as solo performer and alongside Kompakt head Michael Mayer.

With the sophisticated sophomore album ‘Take My Breath Away’ dropping in early 2009 to huge critical acclaim, Gui shows no sign of slowing the momentum that has powered his ascent to the pinnacle of the electronic music community.

Chances to see artists of this calibre do not come often at venues as intimate as Geisha Bar, so don’t miss out.

Music Other review

Shit Robot

You know that “other” feeling when you have experienced something truly awesome? You have spotted that the neighbour’s pool, braved a risky fence climb only to be rewarded by a cool refreshing dip and respite from the hot wheather. Unfortunately this great pleasure is tarnished by the fact that all you friends have decided it would be more wise to huddle around a pedestal fan and complain that it is hot. You end up getting pissed off (despite enjoying yourself) because they are missing out, and, of course the moment would be so much better if everybody could experience it, right?

Massive Attack @ Kings Park

What: Massive Attack

Where: Kings Park

When: 12 March 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 100-110+bf, ticketmaster

Massive Attack, the UK’s ‘trip-hop’ pioneers, bring their haunting and hypnotic fusion of hazy beats, dub, hauntingly soulful melodies and choice samples to Australia this March. Founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grant Marshall (Daddy G) will be joined on tour by vocalists Horace Andy, Deborah Miller, Martina Topley-Bird, and band members Damon Reece (drums), Angelo Bruschini (guitar), John Baggott (keyboards), Winston Blissett (bass) and Julien Brown (drums).

On February 5, Massive Attack will release their 5th studio album, their first since 2003’s 100th Window. Heligoland (EMI) features guests Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio, Elbow’s Guy Garvey, Portishead’s Adrian Utley and long time associate, ragga-reggae veteran Horace Andy. For the first time in this region, all patrons purchasing tickets for Massive Attack’s Australian and New Zealand dates will have the option of including a copy of their much anticipated new album Heligoland at no extra cost. Ticket buyers will have a choice between receiving a digital download of the album with bonus tracks, or a physical Tour Edition that will feature an exclusive cover.

Tickets for Massive Attack’s tour dates will be on pre-sale for a two week period commencing Friday January 22 and those who purchase tickets before Thursday February 4 will be the first in the world to receive Heligoland. Head to www.massiveattack.com.au to access this exclusive offer.

Massive Attack formed out of Bristol’s legendary DJ collective The Wild Bunch in 1988, releasing their debut single Daydreaming two years later, with Shara Nelson and Tricky on vocals. The soaring Unfinished Sympathy with its iconic one-take video followed, as did Safe From Harm, again featuring Nelson, all lifted from their enduring classic and critically acclaimed debut album, Blue Lines. The chilled out Protection followed in ‘94, with singles Karmacoma, Sly and the title track featuring Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn, the album winning Massive Attack the Brit Award for Best Dance Act. The group’s darker third album Mezzanine, featuring Teardrop – vocals by Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) – and Inertia Creeps, won the Q Award for Best Album and a nomination for Mercury Music Prize.

In 2008 Massive Attack were awarded the Q Award for Innovation and last year were honoured with the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Supporting Massive Attack on tour, as well as appearing on stage with them, is Martina Topley-Bird. Martina came to the fore providing the feminine touch on Tricky’s landmark album Maxinquaye, plus three follow-up albums, her eerie soft vocals contrasting with Tricky’s menacing mutterings. In 2003 Martina released her Mercury Music Prize nominated, solo debut album Quixotic, with guest appearances from David Holmes, Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan, Mojo describing it “a sensual and endlessly inventive record.” The Blue God is Martina’s latest album release. She also features on lead vocals on two new Massive Attack tracks, Babel and Psyche.

Kissy Sell Out, Hijack & Solo @ Villa

What: Kissy Sell Out, Hijack, Solo

Where: Villa

When: 1 April 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 30+bf, boomtick, inthemix, moshtix

A whole year since Perth’s newest5 venue opened its doors and we’re celebrating with the return of one of Boomtick’s favourite nights, Tonight Only!. Episode 8 features Kissy Sell Out, HiJack and Solo.

Kissy Sell Out is your post-modern squeeze. Under the wing of Simian Mobile Disco, Headman, DJ Touché and the Loose Cannons; Kissy is our kinda guy. Take a few childhood memories of chasing the opposite sex at the local roller skating rink, mix it with a healthy Nirvana and Felix Da Housecat obsession and you’ve got one sweet sound. Melodically complex. 128 BPM. Youth. The ‘In DJs We Trust’ radio show host took over a year to give birth to his debut album, Youth. Intensely personal with tracks about his family, first kiss and drinking shenanigans, you can expect he’ll wear his heart on his sleeve while standing behind the decks at Villa. Mixmag called Kissy Sell Out, “One of the most exciting, charismatic and entertaining DJs of the decade”. No doubt.

And if you’re looking to bounce on funk-fuelled grooves with chunky beats and quirky hooks, HiJack’s your answer. An established name in the UK’s underground house scene, his sound fuses jacking house and techno, with samples from all musical eras and genres. Innovation – Tick. Vision – Tick. Award-Winning – Tick. Quality – Tick. Deliverance – Tick. Good Times – Tick. Boomtick. It’s James Brown meets N.E.R.D. – nice, huh? His debut EP was signed to the respected UK label On The Brink Recordings, delivering him immediate props. Two more original EPs have followed before the hugely successful ‘Jackpot EP’ (released on US label Potty Mouth Music). HiJack’s sets are full of unreleased surprises which will shanghai your senses – a perfect accomplice to a night of smooth criminals.

Rounding out this tremendous trio is Italian DJ stallion, Solo. Stefano Ritteri (a.k.a Solo) grew up in studios, rehearsal rooms and gigs since the age of 14, playing drums and guitar in bands and experimenting with turntables and FX at school concerts. He held residencies at the coolest clubs in Italy before moving his studio to London and started working behind the scenes, co-producing and mixing for Mowgli for Elite Forces’s label Used&Abused. Their version of ‘No turning back’ became a massive underground hit. After this other releases soon followed, including remixes for Xpress2 and Cornershop, as well his first EP, amusingly named ‘We are the Midgets’, a sign of his new sound (playfully referred to as ‘midget house’ = crazy samples, mad use of percussion and chopped melodies, vocals and synth lines.) Solo is now in high demand for remixes and collaborations with upcoming releases on labels including Defected, Ninja Tune, Mute, Exploited records and many more.

St Jerome’s Laneway Festival @ Northbridge

What: St Jerome's Laneway Festival

Where: Northbridge Cultural Centre

When: 6 February 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 109.90+Bf, laneway site

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to post this! I’m very behind, maybe because it doesn’t have an electronic music focus. It’s been in Perth a few times before and all I’ve heard has been great things. Although I don’t have an official press release, I can tell you the focus is genuinely on alternative music, and artists who are pushing boundaries in their fields, who are still able to be crowd pleasers, like The XX, Mumford and Sons, N.A.S.A., Florence and The Machine, Radioclit and The Middle East. If you want the full lineup it’s after the jump.

Music interview

Z-Trip

A few weeks ago (around New Years, hence the somewhat-dated beginning), I had the chance to catch up with a legend amongst turntablists and DJs alike – Z-Trip. It’s a sad fact that I’ve never actually seen a Z-Trip set, but I will most definitely be catching him at Good Vibrations (site here) in a couple of weeks. He was really cool to talk to and made some valid points for all the people out there hating on DJ Hero as a cheap exercise that’s gonna produce a lot of crappy wannabe DJs. It’s pretty long so kudos to you if you stick with it! As always whole interview after the jump.

Happy New Years dude what did New Years 09/10 entail for Z-Trip?

I think for any DJ New Years is kinda like the Olympics. You train for the gig, it’s usually the highest paying gig of the year so for me I was in Vegas and I have a residency so I was there doing my thing. The cool thing was the next day I got to get down DJ Jazzy Jeff we did a little two by four at my residency on Friday so it was really, really good – the best way to start off a new year.

Bringing The Party Back

With many other big events to compete with on this Friday night, I wasn’t expecting capitol to be packed out to its potential. Little did I know, Capitol was rammed with fans all to support one of the greatest names in hip-hop & turntablism – Grandmaster Flash. Throughout the whole night, the atmosphere in the club was filled with emotions anxiety upon waiting for the main event. Full review on the other side.
