Music review

Jedi on the decks…..

For those people who were lucky enough to be at Villa on friday, they actually got to witness some real amazing talent. Dj Yoda was back in Perth again after playing at Southbound earlier in the month. Although this was his second gig in the same month, it would have been a totally different experience. Find out why on the flipside.

Raekwon [WU-TANG Clan]

What: Raekwon [ Wu-Tang Clan]

Where: Villa Nighclub [Boomtick]

When: 13 March 2010

Cost/Ticket details: $45+BF Available from: Planet Video, Mills, 78 Records and online from the Boomtick SHOP, moshtix.com.au and inthemix.com.au

n 1993, hip-hop would be forever changed by the emergence of the gritty, Shaolin style of the seminal rap clique, the Wu-Tang Clan. Straight from the streets of Staten Island, New York, a unique conglomerate of nine individually exceptional lyricists flourished, fondly referred to as the Wu. These nine: RZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, GZA, U-God, Masta Killa, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard released the epic album Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. This debut garnered rave reviews as it provided listeners with a fresh approach to hip-hop. Moreover, the Wu set trends in a time when hip-hop’s radio play and sales were championed largely by west coast artists.

To this day, the Wu-Tang’s impact on hip-hop culture is unyielding. The Wu not only influenced the state of music as a group but also as individuals. Each member possesses his own exceptional characteristics which attracted cult followings.

Raekwon (the Chef), one of the nine talented emcees, shined as the purist of lyricists. When the time came for him to release his first solo album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (1995), hip-hop, once again, underwent a momentous transformation. To give an accurate analogy Cuban Linx is to albums what Scarface is to movies. In fact, this classic album, which went gold in three days moves from track to track like a film moves from scene to scene. With its invigorating instrumentals and dramatic lyrical tales, Raekwon painted vivid pictures and presented powerful imagery through his enchanting verbal expression.

Fast Forward and Raekwon’s fourth studio album and latest effort Only Built For Cuban Linx… Pt. II was chosen as ‘Album of the Year’ in the 2009 HipHopDx Awards, and Raekwon himself picked as Best Emcee of 2009. It has also been listed on Times Top 10 Albums of The Year, iTunes Best HipHop Album of The Year and Global Grinds Top 10 Album Of The Year in 2009.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Raekwon solo in Perth at Villa!

Music interview

Mowgli

Mowgli is coming to play at Ambar on the 29th of January (event info here) and I had a talk to him about his production shift, what the European scene is like, and about the disposable nature of current electronic music. He had some really great opinions and I’d encourage you to read the interview.

Mowgli (Myspace)

Your latest releases have had definite shift to minimal, was this deliberate?

Yes, of course its deliberate. I like the sound I’m doing now more. Five years ago I was doing Drum n Bass. The sound I was doing before is dead in London and Europe and people have gone for more house and techno. I

Housemeister & Special Guest @ Villa

What: Housemeister & Special Guest

Where: Villa

When: 12 March 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 30+bf presale until 2 March, then 40+bf, moshtix, inthemix

Before you read the press release I’d like to speculate on who the special guest might be, I’m saying Boys Noize. I’m not allowed to know, so I stress that if I’m correct it’s by chance only :) The special guest will be announced on the 2 March, when the ticket price increases by 10 dollars.

The Power! Album Show at Villa is going to be one of those ‘must see’ shows of the year. Housemeister is new to our shores and he will definitely impress – and the special Guest (announced 2 March) will make your ears scream and your feet move! Banging upside the Villa decks will be the Berlin man making muchos noise for boys and girls, Housemeister. Now here’s a rebel without a pause – his sound is techno/electro/acid/punk; it’s dance-mania. After hanging with the Bpitch Control Collective, releasing numerous singles, his first album ‘Who is that Noize’ on his own label and his second album ‘Enlarge your Dose’ on Boys Noize Records.

Housemeister never sleeps – if he’s not in the studio producing, he’s designing the artwork for his label Allyoucanbeat. Watching Housemeister work his sets is something special – his passion to perfection in music is something only a true DJ/producer can pull off. Always experimenting and always thrashing ahead, Housemeister adds the spark to the experience a party needs to make it worthwhile.

Boys Noize. The name alone makes you feel a lil’ tingly. Alongside peers Erol Alkan and Justice, Boys Noize is part of a new hybrid breed of techno artist with influences from the past through a prism to create something fresh, new and exciting enough to send any listener loopy. His latest album ‘Power’ is all thriller, no filler. This release is anything but elevator muzac. His signature sound is riddled throughout, yet you can still hear how far he has come since his debut album ‘Oi Oi Oi’. ‘Power’ is experimental and versatile. The pace has been taken down a notch and the intricacies of his production burst through. This is a new kind of techno encompassing elements of rave and minimal, with a healthy dash of the kind of beats that’d make hip hop producers drool.

Habitat and Shape proudly present one of the most influential and talented underground techno/house music producers in the world…

CHARLIE MAY LIVE (Spooky)

There are few more inspired artists working in electronic music today than Charlie May. As the architect behind many of the stylistic blueprint shifts in dance since the early heady days of acid house, May knows a thing or two about what makes a dancefloor tick. One half of revered progressive house pioneers Spooky; the engineer and producer of many of Sasha’s biggest singles and albums; highly respected solo producer in his own right, May has remained at the vivacious beating heart of house since the early ’90s, taking the pulse of the clubbing populace and ensuring it remains in rude health.

It was in 1992 that Charlie May and production partner Duncan Forbes made their maiden voyage as Spooky. After meeting and becoming firm friends, galvanised by their love of the exploding electronic dance scene and classic Krautrock alike, they cut their first record for progressive imprint Guerilla Records, ‘Don’t Panic’. It was to prove highly influential in the nascent, futuristic new movement in dance music – progressive house – that took the highly addictive, propulsive rhythms of acid, and married them to the aquatic depths of Detroit techno and amniotic washes of ambient music, to create a fresh new hybrid.

Along with fellow forward thinkers Leftfield, Spooky were heralded as figureheads of progressive house, and suddenly, with all eyes on them, were compelled to deliver an album that would deliver the same giddy thrills as ‘Don’t Panic’. But few could have predicted that May and Forbes would create such a sky-strafing and ambitious long-player as ‘Gargantuan’. Sampling the likes of Kosmiche pioneers Can, dipping into dub and all the while addressing both the dancing feet and head alike, ‘Gargantuan’ was one of the first dance albums of its kind, and would go on to spawn a million sound-alikes. Primarily because it was different: drawing on classic electronic elements and dragging them into the future, it stood apart from the crowd.

Their most critically acclaimed album – 1995s ‘Found Sound’ followed – in the wake of three EPs (Clank, Stereo and Shunt) which mangled the musical blueprint, throwing hip hop beats, tech bass and sampladelic elements into the heady Spooky sonic signature. The duo became in high demand as remixers, reworking everyone from Sven Vath and William Orbit to Ultramarine and Lush.

Post the success of the more experimental ‘Found Sound’, the act took a hiatus, and Charlie May went in search of a new project. Linking up with one of the world’s most acclaimed and technically skilled DJs, Sasha, he was drafted in to help him realise his sonic vision. Their initial production collaboration was on a soundtrack to hit Playstation game Wipeout 3, and from there, Sasha tasked May with engineering a new version of unreleased Spooky track ‘Xpander’, which was included on the EP of the same name, along with another May/Sasha production, ‘Belfunk’. When producers needed that extra touch of production sheen, Charlie was the man, and when Sasha collaborated with former Underworld founder Darren Emerson on ‘Scorchio’, it was May co-writing and pushing the buttons.

The acclaimed ‘Airdrawndagger’ album (2002) which became Sasha’s production calling card again featured May behind the boards (alongside Junkie XL), as well as the following Global Underground mix album ‘Involver’. But eager to step out of the shadows, May had all this time been honing his solo chops, and with the release of the fresh ‘Bug EP’ on Junior Boys Own London, he began to garner props as a producer in his own right.

“I’m inclined to make my stuff a bit harder than the Spooky stuff. My solo sound is more techno, whereas with Spooky we’ve always blended the techno and house together.”

Charlie’s solo incarnation was to bear further fruit in 2006, with the Charlie May vs. Sasha cut ‘Seal Clubbing’, a smash record for Renaissance.

Returning to the Spooky fold for a third album, ‘Open’, released in 2007, May and Forbes were embraced by the public and critics alike for fashioning a record of emotive dancefloor potency, which came accompanied with an additional ambient disc. After touring the US to promote the record, they found themselves in New York City, where they settled to collaborate with Sasha on a succession of new productions for the DJ’s fresh label Emfire – (Coma, Park It In The Shade, Mongoose and Who Killed Sparky). Of the back of these well-received cuts, the duo were brought in to assist with the production of ‘Involv2er’, the second volume in his DJ mix/remixes series.

In 2009, Spooky were hard at work on several new projects. A new double mix CD for Platipus ‘Tales 4′, saw them investigate both uptempo dancefloor material and electronica, with additional production elements. It also contained two brand new Spooky tracks, exclusive to the compilation. In addition, there will be a succession of special one-off singles. But this will also be the year that Charlie May’s solo career really kicks into gear. Having etched several new club tracks, exhibiting a heavier techno influence, Charlie’s more inspired than ever, and has plenty of new plans.

“I’m focusing on singles for a bit but I’d also like to do an album – its something I really want to do. That would be a big achievement. It’s all guns blazing really – watch this space.”

The money the Miss Universe 2010 WA Preliminary Finalists raise this year will go directly to helping local blind children living in WA. So the more you donate in return for your entry, the more we can light up the faces of local children in need.

Our beach parties have always been about bringing crew together, good times and have been thrown free of charge, however this time we ask you all to look inside your hearts (and your wallets).

A Coin donation is welcomed also, but we would like you to consider how much you pay for a redbull/vokda or festival ticket. I think the parties are worth it ;)

Music interview

Chuckie

A couple of weeks ago I had an interview with Dutch (actually from Suriname but living in The Netherlands) producer Chuckie, who’s playing at Good Vibrations (event website here) The first two attempts to hook up the interview were unsuccessful because Chuckie had been producing music all night before the first attempt, and then had his massive Dirty Dutch festival when we tried for the second time. Third time was a charm! Chuckie had barely any sleep, was sick and was still able to do interviews, and be insightful too. Read the full interview after the jump…

Chuckie (Myspace)

How did the Dirty Nutch night go?

Crazy, Crazy, Crazy! I had 30000 people and it was a total mad house. I had people there from all over the world, which was really good. It was a good cap to the year.

How long ago did the night start?

We started 4 years ago and we started it as a club tour, and then we were doing the tour with 10-12 gigs, with 1500 people at the party and we thought why not have 5000 people at a finishing party? And we did and we
