This Week Naeem from Spankrock pops in to have a chat with Perthquake on what’s gooood & what’s not. Catch Spankrock spittin his rhymes at Future Music Festival (Mellen Events) this Sunday ! Since he was calling from the “Empire State of Mind” (NEW YORK ), I had to wake super early to have a chat with him. Orite so here’s the full interview …..
Firstly, could you tell us a lil bit on what Spank Rock’s sound is all bout’?
Its gonna be difficult, I guess my sound is the progression of hip hop, rap, baltimore, funk and whatever good. I try to represent in the new time in Music. Playing that electronica goooodness, all I want is to play music the crowd can go nuts for and to get real bumpin’ to.
(If you had to be labelled) What do u prefer to labelled as, A rapper? or someone that plays B-More?
I prefer to be a rapper that’s what I do haha !! Essentially Ive been listening to rap growing up, essentially I still rap but my sound is alternative cuz its influenced by other genres….i got it all fused up.
Yea its a pretty unique sound, its definitely got that B-More feel to it but way more rhymes.
Yeh no doubt.
So who would ya want to collaborate with in the future ?
Umm, this actually annoys cuz when I signed up to Downtown(Records), they asked me the same question like they can get anyone to work with me, f**n record labels !!
Hhahaha to answer your question,The Dream and Andre 3000. I think that their sound would complement the sound im really trying to go for.
I feel that I prefer working with friends, it’s a fun and comfortable environment which helps transfer into my sound.
Talking bout people you have worked with include names like Santagold, MIA, Mos Def, N.A.S.A, with no disrespect to the others, who have you enjoyed working with the most?
Prob say Santi, shes the nicest, coolest person ive met in the past few years. We share similar backgrounds about where we come from, so we are pretty much on the same page . When we both not busy touring or what not, we try to catch up here in NY, or when we were working together, its like a family cuz we would be in the studio in the day and go and cook dinner together. Cool Chick.
Specifically How was it like working with Mos? Hahaha
Actually didn’t do in the studio with him, it was done at different times which is a drag.
Although I interviewed him when his new album ” The Ecstatic” came out sometime last year. It was a real cool experience I really look up to him and what he’s about.
What do you feel makes Spank Rock unique and different in the rap game?
I don’t know. There are definitely some rappers I really look up to that I take some influence from, but I think one of the biggest trends in being a rapper and Hip-Hop culture is to be extremely arrogant. I think a lot of people make claims about themselves that they haven’t really reached, so I think that’s one thing with me, I focus more on what makes music good music. I’m approaching this as a songwriter and not as a… I don’t have my own dick in my mouth is what I’m trying to say. I really just enjoy making music and enjoy the outcome of partying and seeing how kids respond to it.
Ok So your heading in to down under for the future music festival, what sort of expectations do u have bout the event?
I came down a couple of years ago, what I can say is they are super happy kids, to me its best audience in the entire world, solely because of the atmosphere without sounding wrong. The festivals are gonna be a blast, all peeps just there just want to party and Im gonna try satisfy their need. But also on a serious note, ill be working with a Sydney organization in helping Aboriginal kids reconnect with music, so it aint gonna be all party time for me.
In regards to live performances, what can spank rock bring to the table. Just so the peeps will know hahah?
Expect a lot of energy, get the crowd goin, DJ really smart of the music is put together. Its gonna be a big Dance Party.
Orite looking forward to your upcoming gig. Thanks .
