Doin’ Their Think

“Sold Out” signs decorated the door of Mojo’s on Saturday March 27, the final stop on Horrorshow’s headlining national tour.  Since the release of their acclaimed sophomore album Inside Story, the talented Sydney duo have cemented their place as one of the most intelligent, thought-provoking acts in Australian hip hop.  Having previously supported fellow labelmates The Herd and Urthboy, it was time for the deceptively young MC Solo and DJ Adit to step up to the spotlight.

Kissy Sell Out

Thursday night y’all event info here! The man who brings you your Thursday night (12-2) BBC radio show is coming to Australia. Yep, that probably doesn’t mean much to many Australians, but there is this thing called the internets and you can stream his show there. Basically it’s a mix of what’s hot in ‘electro,’ and it’s a pretty lose definition as we’ve discussed before. His own production is very cool, and much more rock based, but still very easy to dance too. With regards to his Dj sets, Kissy says he likes to mix quickly and make a pretty pumping party set. To find out more about Kissy read the full interview after the jump…

Kissy began with a standard everyday question, ‘How’s the weather over there,’ but the cynical voice in which he asked it made me reply with a smarmy tone, ‘Oh it’s 25 degrees, sunny and going to be a great day!’

Agoria – Balance Mix

Artist: Agoria

Title: Balance 16

Label: EQ Records

Release: 5 March 2010

Rating: 8/10

This ‘album’ isn’t really an album, it’s a mix CD, mixed by Agoria. He’s a French dj/producer who started up at the end of last century. I have a new favourite quote from the press release, ‘beat open-minded,’ I’d like to believe that’s me, and I’d encourage every electronic music lover to do the same. This mix is definitely a testament to that ideology. The majority of tracks are minimal tech, or just straight techno, but by chance I put the second CD in first, which blew me away. I think I’ve picked a track that represents the half-way point between the two mixes. The full review is after the jump…

Exotic East

The East End hosted a new night in Fremantle last Friday, King Tito’s Dirty Disco. The name is a mouthful, but the club and event is easy to swallow. The venue was great, the vibe was relaxed and the music was perfect (for me mainly thanks to FKNMIDAS). Here’s a FKNMIDAS track to make you understand how good he is…

FKNMIDAS – Ina My Mind

For those of you who haven’t been before, because I hadn’t… The club is two storey, and divided into three sections, an upper level, and a lower level with two sections. The upper level has numerous couches, ottomans and small dancefloor. The lower level has two areas, a lounge area around the main bar, again numerous couches and ottomans. There’s a seat service drinks person too, very convenient! The final section is off the lower lounge area, it’s a sunken dancefloor with a raised stage, which is pretty impressive. The entire venue has oriental style wall paper, is low lit with red lights and the couches are over the top elegant. It’s all very trendy! If you want to know how the night went it’s all after the jump…

His name is smooth enough but his production will melt you into a puddle. I don’t know a lot about soul/funk/disco but I know that Jacques Renault’s EP, Favicon, released late last year has to be something of a phenomenon. “Norman’s Fire” is very funky, I find it hard not to sway slowly from side to side. I shut my eyes and imagine lots of sexy people swaying with me, then we ‘get up and dance to the music.’ The second track, “Look At You” doesn’t have the dance quality of “Norman’s Fire” but is equally as catchy. Everything is put together so nicely on this EP, if you’re into this kind of music, I’ll find it hard to believe you couldn’t enjoy these tracks! I strongly suggest you buy this ep.

Rosemount Easter Bash ft. M-Phazes, Bentman & Sipn, more @ Rosemount

What: Rosemount Easter Bash ft. M-Phazes, Bentman & Sipn, plus more

Where: The Rosemount

When: 4 April 2010

Cost/Ticket details: Presales $22+BF from Mills, Planet and 78 Records

This is probably the best value gig Perth has ever seen.  Ten sets, several touring artists, two CD launches – and no work the next day!  Let’s break it down.  At the top of the bill, M-Phazes (riding a wave of popularity since being chosen for Feature Album on Triple J) is launching his latest effort, the critically acclaimed Good Gracious… and in honour of the event, he’s bringing Illy and Mantra along to help out.  Y’know, just because.  Then, locals Bentman & Sipn – whose recent single launch sold out Rocket Room solely on word of mouth – will launch their debut album The Return Of Bentman & Sipn.  Armed with their secret weapon, their new beats man DJ U-Wish, this show will hopefully herald a new era for this smashing local act.  Then there’s an impressive list of local and ex-local hip hop acts, making this seem less like a gig and more like a mini-festival.  That’s really how you should treat it.  Doors are opening at 4:30pm, so come down and have some Sunday brews, listen to the tunes and then get your dance on.  Plus, since it’s Easter, the next day is Easter Monday – just perfect for recovering from your epic hangover!

Horrorshow @ Rocket Room, Mojos

What: Horrorshow

Where: Rocket Room, Mojos

When: 27 March 2010

Cost/Ticket details: Available through Moshtix or $20 at the door.

Bring it!  Sydney hip hop duo Horrorshow are heading to Perth on a headlining tour, after carving up the Amps stage last year when they supported Urthboy.  They’re a member of the Elefant Traks family, the hip hop label known for finding interesting, thought-provoking acts that trade more on their intellect and skill than on brute force and the ability to incite fights.  Think The Herd, Astronomy Class and of course Urthboy, and you’re in the ballpark.  They started making waves last year with their song Thoughtcrime, which notched up a decent bit of airplay, and their latest LP Inside Story was Triple J album of the week.  They haven’t produced a breakthrough “hit” yet (nothing like Illy’s Pictures or Seth Sentry’s Waitress Song), but they’re a well-rounded act who are on the road to success – it just might be more of a slow burn for them.  Any act that names themselves after a Clockwork Orange reference has a lot going for them, though.  They’re playing two Perth dates – Thursday 25 March at Rocket Room, and Saturday 27 March at Mojo’s.  Spit Syndicate and personal favourite Rhythm Infinit are supporting.  Get involved!

The Likes Of You is growing up, and like a teenager in the throes of puberty, it is largely misunderstood, frustrated at the world and trying to be seen and heard. At the tender age of 3 years, The Likes Of You is packing its rucksack and venturing into the vast unknown. Is Australia ready to be shifted from its comfortable bed of commercialism and electro?

Greetings from Australia! How are you?

I’m good, I’m just about to get started in my studio today, I have it all rewired and set up really well, so excited on getting to work on new material

The super cool South American chameleon makes his 4th trip to Oz! If you caught his show last year at The Manor – you’ll know you’re in for an all night crazy party!!
One time pin up boy for Brazil’s baile funk sound, Edu K has moved through genres like fidget house, new rave, rap and bass and now on to the rather contemporary tribal/tropical/tech house sound that is channelled by the likes of Vonstroke, Renaissance Man, Sound Pellegrino and the Dead Fish label.
Collaborations with the Crookers, Scott Cooper and Perez Hilton(?!) and featured releases across Southern Fried records, Potty Mouth, Mad Decent and Sweat It Out now give way to an array of new remixes and work on Bonde do Role’s new LP, plus 12” releases in coming months on Dirtybird records (Vonstroke), Anabatic (Worthy), Man Recordings (Crookers), Scattermish Records (Melbourne), Sweat it Out (Ajax/Sydney), petFood… to name a few!!
Basically EDU K is a bad man, realllll bad!! Get ready for some serious party!!
