What: Redshape

Where: Geisha

When: 23 April 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 20+bf, moshtix

In early 2006 Techno’s own masked man Redshape appeared for the first time on infamous Dutch imprint Delsin records. This initial release “Shapedworld EP” kicked him into the international techno scene, getting support from all major DJ from day one.

Redshape soon developed his own individual view on modern dance music and set to leave a mark in Techno.

Since coming to prominence over the last few years, very few producers (with the exception of Carl Craig and a few others) have come close to matching his technofied mission, meaning each and every Redshape 12″ is held in high regard by the more discerning techno heads. His music brought him into the yearly toplists of German’s groove & De-bug as well as a lot of other magazines.

Trying to describe his sound is kind of a hard task, sitting somewhere between everything in dance music and Redshape’s own imagination you get a direct extract – not minimal, not maximal and always historical respecting the vibe of detroit.

Resident Advisor’s Pete Chambers once said “The future of the past never sounded more contemporary.” which perfectly surrounds redshapes musical vision.

Repeating is definitaly a thing Redshape works hard to prevent, so his live shows, which brought him to nearly every known European club, morph and developeverytime to never play the same show a second time.

As a DJ Redshape is still very inspired by the good old school of mixing and trying tomake tracks speak to tracks, making music out of music.

Redshape’s music and remixes have been released on labels like Styrax Leaves, Delsin, Music Man, R&S etc. not forgetting his own imprint “Present Recordings”.

Working together with Delsin Records he will release his debut “The Dance Paradox” in October 2009, April 2010 the masked man of Techno makes his first visit to Australia and plays @ Geisha Bar on Friday 23rd April for Democracy.

Eddie Halliwell @ Villa

What: Eddie Halliwell

Where: Villa

When: 16 April 2010

Cost/Ticket details: TBA

Come get intimate with one of the absolute kings of the industry for a 3 hour set! When any DJ at the top of their game steps up in the booth it has that effect, you know the one.

Before they cue up a track, or even plug in their headphones, the mood changes – eyes dart to the front, people get up on their toes, breathing quickens as pulses begin to race and there is a murmur of expectation. But with Eddie it’s not merely a murmur, it’s a rapturous roar, one that grows until at its crescendo somewhere in the crowd the chant begins – “EDDIE! EDDIE! EDDIE!” – at that moment the uninitiated know they are in for something special, that they are about to see someone special: Eddie Halliwell, the precocious talent, championed by the dance floor to become one of the biggest breakthrough DJ’s on the planet.

It has been a meteoric rise. Not only is it screamed out on dance floors across the globe and at out very own SUMMADAYZE!, but he’s renowned as one of the major players in dance music, having just been voted 19th (top 20 for the 4th consecutive year) in the ‘DJ Mag Top 100 DJ’s Poll’, and voted DJ of the year twice by Mixmag, the only DJ to win the award more than once.

When everything else is swept away DJ-ing is about making the dance floor erupt. Few possess the same incendiary talent as Eddie. Behind the mixer he seems frenetic: a hive of activity as his hands move swiftly but deftly.

Constantly manipulating the music with lightning cuts, layers of effects and slick scratches, he makes you question both your eyes and ears.

Tiesto has also always shown great support to Eddie and recently labeled Eddie as a ‘Legend,’ in an interview with DJ Magazine!

You have to see Eddie in a club, up close and personal. Simple as that.

Boys Boys Boys @ The Rosemount

What: Boys Boys Boys video launch

Where: The Rosemount

When: 9 April 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 12, door sales

Video launch = excuse to party…It’s been a long time coming but Boys Boys Boys! saved up all their pennies and created a music video for ‘Ticky Ticky Boom’ that’s worthy of Flashdance comparisons and So You Think You Can Dance accolades!

It took a long time to find director Ben Young (turns out filmmakers are really busy!) but Boys knew they had the man for the job when Ben pitched his idea: ‘a sad and lonely man dances solo in his living room to ‘Ticky Ticky Boom’ when all of a sudden his dreams come true as lead singer Jerico Wallace, synchronised dancers, Boys Boys Boys! and a hundred party goers crash his house culminating in a massive party popper-disco ball-coloured streamer frenzy’. It’s like he read Boys’ minds, basically.

Boys learnt just how much hard work goes in to making a film after 3 weeks of intense pre-production just for a single day’s shoot. They soon realised how lucky they were to have Ben Young and Director of Photography David Le May on board. A bit of a name around town in cinematic circles, Ben Young won the Young Filmmaker of The Year award at the 2005 WASAs, directed five short films and secured Screenwest funding for a feature to be shot later this year. David Le May, or as Boys like to say ‘LeMAZING’, has shot heaps of amazing video clips including No Milk for You (Brash and Sassy) and Acute (Sugar Army) as well as many films and TV productions (Summer Breeze, Castaway, mY generation).

After all of this hard work from a seventeen member crew and a cast of thirty plus, Boys have decided it’s time to throw a well earned party, showing off their brand-spanking new video clip by turning The Rosemount into their own personal MTV.

Joining Boys at the party will be The Tigers’ side project Sabre Tooth Tigers, a ramshackle goon-rock three-piece who shrug off any sense of musical pretention in an unholy invocation of all that is dangerous, sexy and sweaty about rock’n'roll.

Shimmying under the disco ball will also be Boys’ favourite divas Brash and Sassy strutting their stuff on stage in fashionable gear and sultry poses making us all feel that touch more glamorous.

And to start the night off the nightingale voices of Simone and Girlfunkle, who will also be premiering their new video clip, with it’s simple but amazing concept: ‘guy gets covered in food by two hot babes’. Delicious!

And the entertainment doesn’t stop there! Boys are so excited about the making of films after spending a day on set that they have the fever for Perth filmmaking. As well as the bands there will be screenings from local filmmakers including WASA winners Ben Young, Pierce Davison, Vincenzo Perrella and Dan Osborn.

The ‘glistening sonics’ of electronic music enticed a grunge loving 16 year old James Zabiela to his first set of belt drive turntables some years ago, fast forward to 2009 and James is one of the most prolific DJs and producers on the planet.

James Zabiela has released critically acclaimed compilations on various labels including Renaissance and Ministry of Sound; his most recent album the ‘Masters Series’ is an audio diary of three months in the life of James himself. As a follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed The Masters Series, James Zabiela and Renaissance have joined forces again to release James’ forthcoming sequel album, The Masters Series: LIFE. Boomtick are excited to give a FREE copy (Numbers Limited) to those who attend the show on May 20 at Villa Nightclub!

Sail into the sunset

Four weeks, four huge crowds. This week Yacht Club Djs sailed smoothly into limelite and pleased the landlubbers. The number of people on the dancefloor for their entire set was amazing, and no one seemed to be holding back, it was squashed and sweaty! The kind of party you want to be a part of because everyone is having so much fun. There were plenty of classics thrown in, plenty of sing-a-longs and enough fun to well, fill a boat.

Although I still have my reservations about jumping onto said party boat. I don’t

Farj Farj From Home

Australian based Aquatic Lab Records have been pushing dubstep and related sounds to the masses since 2006. Having released tunes from heavyweight identities such as Caspa, Rusko, Zed Bias and Cotti, Aquatic are the leading source of fresh dubstep wax in our fine country. Friday night at Shape celebrated the launch of the labels 9th imprint, Cluekid’s re-working of Reggie Stepper’s Drum Pan Sound, a tasty tune featuring a lovely rolling bassline underneath the vocals of the original. With the sounds for the night provided by label co-founder DJ Farj, known for dropping all the big tracks months before they see the light of day and having supported the finest of the UK scene on their visits to Australia, stepper’s were certainly in for a treat. Break it down for the full review.

The New Wu

It seemed like  just a normal Saturday night at Villa on the 13th of March, little did I know what I was going to be experiencing later that night. It was fair to say that it was a true rap experience, a true rap concert. The first thing I noticed was the sound system, im really reluctant to be criticising because I really had a great time although the sound system was really not suited for hip-hop or rap. It sounded very distorted and we actually had to swap to the other side because it just wasnt tolerable from where we were.

The official Raekwon was on getting the crowd going before Raekwon appeared, he did a great job dropping “bombs” for the crowd to sing along. As far as I remembered, Villa was chanting tunes from Biggie, Nas & Jay Z. At this stage Villa was cranking like it was 1993, back in the “Golden Era” where people were just chucking the Wu ’s in the air, screaming WU-TANG ! Raekwon came out to this and I think wanted to repay this love and dropped “C.R.E.A.M”, which in my books is in the category of “Best Rap Tracks Of All Time”. It was the commercial success of “Enter the Wu-Tang”, it made them. Raekwon kept this party vibe going as he got the crowd bouncing the whole night. He played a lot of his original album from 1995, “Only Built For Cuban Linxx” and mixture of his newer stuff. The highlight of my night was when Raekwon did a Old Dirty Bastard tribute, he got everyone chanting “R.I.P  O.D.B” and followed it with Shimmy Shimmy Ya ! The vibe was really grooving by this time.

He left his new single, The Nu Wu to my memory was the one of the final tracks and by this time the crowd was chanting his name. He finished it with a big speech if you like to call it that, telling the crowd to “rep” where they came from and also added that Perth surprised him with how we got down to rap !

Boys Noize/Erol Alkan

Thanks Headswillroll for the heads up on these tracks! I heard “Lemonade” at Future and was completely unaware of what it was, I asked Alex what track it was because it stood out so much, I just thought it was another track I didn’t know, but it was only up on his myspace the day before. If you like these tracks please buy them!
