We Love Sounds (Perth) – CANCELLED

As taken from the official Boomtick release:

“It is with great disappointment the We Love Sounds Perth event has been forced to
cancel.

Faced with advanced ticket sales well below any reasonable expectations and
meeting the commitments of an enormous budget with extraordinary production, we
have no choice but to do the responsible thing and cancel the event.

When planning for this year’s event began many months ago, the national promoter,
Sounds, and the local promoter, Boomtick, were determined to bring something new
and fresh to We Love Sounds 2010 – the most important ingredient being that
‘festival’ feel – all acts together in one space for the very first time in Perth.

Together, the promoters fought hard to make the festival one of the most spectacular
on the circuit. This meant unparalleled production and infrastructure costs to ensure
all patrons were undercover, experiencing the very best in audio and visual quality.
Rest assured every situation and scenario to avoid this course of action have been
carefully considered. This included scaling back the production value of the event,
however this simply wasn’t an option for the promoters. When a patron buys a ticket
to one of our events or festivals, they should expect nothing but the best and
anything less is unacceptable.

Please note, all other Australian We Love Sounds festival events (and Winter Sound
System shows) are proceeding as planned.

Ticket refund information:
Refunds can be obtained from original point of purchase.

Midnight Circus – Addict

At first I wasn’t instantly won over. That’s the way it works with most drugs though, you think “oh yeah that’s okay.” Maybe I’ll try it again, then you’re done for, you can’t get enough of it. Aptly titled addict is obviously like this. It’s fast paced and catchy, the vocals help it retain a pop feel whilst still being a great dance track with plenty of trendy synths. Have a listen and let me know what you think?

Nadastrom @ Limelite

What: Nadastrom & Timmy Trumpet @ Metros (Freo)

Where: Metros (Freo)

When: 18 June 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 15, doorsales

The chill is setting in, the heaters are turning on and LIMELITE gets set for an end of exams party like no other, with NADASTROM and special guest TIMMY TRUMPET.

Reigning from Washington D.C., Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom have seen nothing but success since being established as duo DJs Nadastrom in 2007. Describing their sound as “club music with the energy and aggressiveness of Baltimore club music and punk” (Spinner), what is their forte? Indisputably it is their aptitude for pumping out club, house, electro and techno sounds that will get any person infused to their music and onto the floor.

Proof positive, the debut release from Nadastrom sold out on vinyl and became a digital store annual bestseller. Their debut Pussy EP with Switch’s label Dubsided topped international charts and became the number one download on Beatport in 2008. That same year Nadastrom also scored the most downloaded remix of the year on tastermaker’s blog Discobelle. Another Dubsided EP release in 2009 led to guest spots on BBC Radio One, playing alongside Diplo, A-Trak, Laidback Luke and Steve Aoki as part of a worldwide tour schedule. In between they created tracks with artists such as Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Kid Sister, Nina Sky, and Pitbull. March 2010 saw them bring their deep and infectious tracks to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Looking at their credentials, this energetic emerging duo is simply unstoppable!

Dave was a longtime resident of Spin Magazine’s “Best Party in America”, Taxlo, renowned for blowing up the dance floor with combinations of dance, hip hop, and punk rock tracks. He has also toured the world with highly respected DJs such as DJ Craze, DJ Ayres, and Tittsworth. On the other hand, Matt has been producing, remixing, and engineering for the world’s top electronic artists for nearly a decade, and has a Grammy Award nomination to boast about. His work appears on a long list of labels such as Global Underground, Ultra, Saved Records, Renaissance, EMI, and Minus.

Having met through a mutual friend, Dave and Matt came up with their band name Nadastrom as they wanted to reflect both their names as individual producers and artists. Interestingly, Nada is not Dave’s surname but his nickname as he was in a punk band called De Nada. Never refer to them as “Nada Storm” as they just might bite your head off, particularly because they describe themselves as “yeti”, a hybrid creation of sound hunted around the world. Be part of this monstrous musical phenomenon that is Nadastrom. According to Dave and Matt, “you gotta see it to believe it.”

Maybe Dancing Will Help feat. Tabularaza @ Norfolk Basement

What: Maybe Dancing Will Help feat. Tabularaza

Where: Norfolk Basement

When: 18 June 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 5, door sales

Perthquake, Scenic and Warm Kitten proudly present the first ever MAYBE DANCING WILL HELP!
We are being told that the Perth club scene is dying if not already in the ground. This may or may not be true, but that’s okay, because Fremantle is the new (and wildly more fun), Perth. With that in mind WA’s premier electronic music blog PERTHQUAKE has rallied up a few talented performers for a night of debauched disco, nefarious nu-disco and… fuck I’m sorry I’m totally rambing… we just wanna have a fun night with some good tunes. And providing those good tunes will be:
TABULARAZA, with their first ever completely LIVE show (none of this playing off Ableton). This up-and-coming duo craft the kind of dreamy, fun, grooving synth-disco jams that will literally prevent you from doing anything other than dance. To get an idea of what you’re instore for, visit their myspace

Tabularaza (Myspace)
And supporting these lads will be good friends and disco fiends in their own right, HOLY THURSDAY, HIPPO CAMP and of course your hosts, the PERTHQUAKE DJs.
We’re all getting pretty tired of a club scene that appears to be imploding on itself, and Fremantle is there for the taking. Full of eager kids who just wanna party, we need to unite to form what will be a fucking awesome Friday night.
From 8pm til 12am at the Norfolk Basement, the party jams kick-on at King Tito’s Dirty Disco at the East End Bar.
It’s early days yet, so keep your eyes peeled for a spanking new flyer and *fingers crossed* possibly even some transport from the big, dead smoke for those too scared to tackle the 15 minute trip southward.
There’s a burgeoning scene of damn cool producers rising up and making dancing fun again, and we look forward to showcasing it for you come June 18!

Mike Fielding a.k.a NABOO

A few weeks ago Will gave me the opportunity to chat to Mike Fielding, better known to most of us as Naboo of the Mighty Boosh. Now my chat with him kinda had me a little worried as to what people should actually be expecting when he arrives for his two sold out shows at Shape and Villa this weekend. Mainly because I like my DJs to mix (but that’s just me, and I think it’s fair to say a large chunk of people going to these events are just looking forward to dressing up and having a good time). I’ve heard a few whispers eminating from his east coast shows which have not only confirmed some of my fears but enhanced them. BUT I DIGRESS. I think if you’re a fan of the show, you’re going to enjoy getting drunk with your friends in Mighty Boosh costumes and having a boogie, just don’t expect too much from the man behind the wheels. I look forward to expanding on this once I’ve actually seem him this weekend. Full interview on the other side of tiiiiime and spaaaaaaace.

The Mighty Boosh (Website)

What got you into DJing and how long have you been doing it for?

It started off for a friend as a favour actually he was running a club night in south London and he asked if I could DJ. He phoned and said do you wanna DJ for an hour and I said yeah…

Habitat DJ Competition 2010 – Heat 1

The first round of the inaugural Habitat DJ Competition was held at Shape over the weekend. With a record number of 47 entries for this year’s competition, narrowing down the competition to one winner will be a difficult challenge.

Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles II

Artist: Crystal Castles

Title: Crystal Castles (II)

Label: Lies Labels

Release: May 24 2010

Rating: 8/10

For a band that I hated, I love this album. The first album was, well, disappointing! Without anything concrete to grab on to, nothing stood out, it was a wall of noise. Okay, “Alice Practice,” was pretty rad, maybe “Crimewave,”  and “Reckless” were good too, but it has nothing on the latest release. This second album has turned me into a Crystal Castles pseudo-groupie, if I knew them I’d hang out with them every night.

It’s all about the melody, that’s what was missing off so many of their previous tracks. Empathy is the best example, it still has the feel of Crystal Castles distorted vocals, and something that has been made without any ‘real’ instruments, but it has the perfect catchy melody. Bliss! From Empathy my love grew and grew, until it flowered into a beauiful electronic love heart (there you go Jaxon, is that wanky enough for you?). If you were hestitant like I was, then don’t be this album is 100% worth it.

Joachim Garraud

As We Love Sounds approaches (get yo tickets HERE!) and the gap between summer festival seasons closes faster than you can say ‘what rain?’ Perthquake will be the place to be to find out a little about some of the awesome artists on offer. Seriously, if Underworld, Tiga, Proxy, Zombie Nation, Laidback Luke et al. don’t get you excited for a festival I don’t know what will. I was fortunate enough to catch up with Joachim Garraud, who interestingly doesn’t have ‘live’ next to his name, yet sounds like he has the most amazing live show out of everyone. As you can imagine he was very keen to tell me about it, so read on to find out what’s in store for you should you check him out in a few weeks at WLS! Jump for the full interview.

I know you’re pretty well known in most places but for those of us less in-the-know could you please give us a brief background on what you’re all about?

Okay so hello my name is Joachim Garraud, I come from France. I’m a music lover, producer, DJ, remixer and the kind of music I’m producing on stage is electro stuff and techno stuff. And

Clive Henry Review

As Summer is slowly making way for the Winter season, so is the shift from outdoor parties, progressing into the club atmosphere. Last Friday was the Democracy installment at Geisha, proudly hosting one half of Peace Division’s members – Clive Henry.
