Slow down you’re moving too fast

Topical posts are the new black, I’ve done a few in the past but I’m cashing in now whilst people have their thinking caps on! The two articles I’ve read that were the catalyst for this post (inthemix’s article on ‘dj/promoters’ here and stoney roads’ ’sup sydney’ here), have focused on the promoters running the nights themselves, how they do it and what seems to go wrong. There’s one thing they’re missing; the club goers. Clubbers are an important part of this equation too, and the general nightclub/youth culture might be something that’s crushing electronic music in clubs. Everything in our culture seems instantly disposable and this carries over pretty easily into the music scene, driven by ‘blog culture’ (read hipster runoffs hilarious h8 on 2k10 here). I’m not saying promoters aren’t to blame either, because everything the Stoney Roads and inthemix articles say hits the bulls-eye. There has to be more to the story than simply blaming the people who organize a night. On the other hand, it might not really be the clubbers fault that everything is so disposable in the first place! Everything will become clear after the jump…

Local djs rock the house

Thanks to Julia Lane for this quick review of last Saturday’s Jack In The Box. Jack In The Box is run by Amnesia and NVS and is now a monthly fixture at The Republic on Saturday nights. By all accounts so far it was a roaring success, which is good to hear for the Perth scene, we need more variety! And I absolutely love house at the moment, so the more I learn about it the better. Here’s the full review…

New Perth Event “Jack in the Box” was launched on Saturday 24th July at midnight. There was an amazing turn out of over two hundred keen music lovers, contributing their awesome dance skills and sharp attire to an eclectic night of House appreciation.

Amnesia kicked off the night in fine fashion, warming up the dance floor with an old school Chicago and UK Acid House set. Shockone provided a killer party-vibe set, pumping out popular tunes as the crowd went wild for his unique style. Defeat capped off the evening with some hard electro disco beats, which left cool customers wanting for more.

Prizes of best dressed and best dancer were awarded although a very impressive effort was made by all for the $50 bar cards. Tully Jagoe stealing the limelight with his fabulous Startrek ensemble.

An enjoyable and energetic evening was had by all, the event attracting a mixed crew with an assortment of musical tastes. “Jack in the Box” is a monthly event which delves into the broad genre of House music in all its forms and facets.

This week Perthquake recommends…

If you don’t want to get thrown out of Perth venues like Hot Chip did, then I’d advise you to head to any of these events…

King Tito’s feat. Tabularaza (Fri 30 July)

With half of Perthquake getting down to this, why wouldn’t you attend? Not to mention the main act, Tabularaza played the original Maybe Dancing Will Help, and I know for a fact they won’t disappoint. With all the regular King Tito’s djs in tow you know it’s going to be a night of great tunes and dancing.

Aston Shuffle @ Limelite (Fri 30 July)

If ya like electro then you’d bloody well better like Aston Shuffle. These guys were one of my first electro loves with Everyone and then Stomp Yo Shoes. They might be from Canberra but it’s nothing to hold against them when you hear one of their sets. Support comes from Jus Haus? and Zel.

Evidence @ The Velvet Lounge (Sat 31 July)

Nightclass, Deadweight and Perthquake presents a night of a night of dubstep and bass pressure. Promising to save you money for your washing powder, it’s free, this will be a solid rinse out (I think that’s the term) of local dubstep talent. Featuring dj sets from VISHNU, ST-1, SAXON & TIFA, PICKLES, and D.Y.P.

Zombies For Money – Sururumba

No album this week, instead it’s time to focus on a forthcoming Trouble & Bass EP release, Zombies For Money’s Sururumba. This release reminds me of Malente and Dex’s Gipsy Kings. It has the rolling, bouncy feel to it. However, unlike Gipsy Kings, I think Sururumba is more of a set filler than set killer. This doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be discounted at all, the basic melody of the track is catchy. The problem lies in the repetitiveness, it never feels like the track goes anywhere, despite having build ups and breakdowns it just doesn’t quite feel right! Have a listen anyway and let me know what ya think…

Flight Facilities

The mysterious disco-house duo Flight Facilities are enjoying some unexpected attention from their hit track Crave You. They’re touring hard at the moment (at time of writing are in Japan) and will grace Perth’s shores next week at Steamworks (event info here, tickets here). It’s cool to see a blatant transition in genre popularity on the radio, not that I didn’t like what I was hearing before, but it might be time for a new group of artists to enjoy some attention (think The Swiss/Cassian/DCUP etc…). The guys answered some questions about their work, the groups history, their influences and the Australian disco-house scene. Whilst you’re reading the interview I’d like to share with you my second favourite Flight Facilities track (after Crave You of course), their remix of The Lowbrows Dream in the Desert. Full interview after the jump…

Flight Facilities (Myspace)

There only seems to be speculation about who you guys are. How come you’ve kept your identities quite secretive?

We’ve kept it secret so people judge the music based on what it is. There’s a tendency to judge a song based on the people who made it. It’s only human. That’s why things like

Major success

On saturday night, the seventh installment of Major Break demonstrated exactly why Boomtick and the event itself, Major Break have such a solid reputation. When I arrived, there was already a good number of people there, and there was a great energy in the room. People were clearly wearing their dancing shoes and had come out to party! The local Boomtick dj’s providing the support for the headline acts performed at their usual high standard. Fdel and Philly Blunt had the job of warming up the crowd as they filtered in and did so incredibly well as always. By the time Micah stepped up, there was a good amount of people filling all sections of the Villa and a great buzz in the air. He seamlessly mixed a tasty selection and displayed why he has such an outstanding reputation for doing so. Full review after the jump…

Weekly Dj Mix

Spaks is back in Perth after spending the last, 6 months+ in San Francisco. Before he does head home he’ll be making a stop over in LA and will play at Burning Man Festival (basically a massive art festival/installment, read more here). I saw his mix all over facebook, in the shape mailout, and now I’m finding it on my own site. Spaks’ mixes are always full of awesomeness, and this one isn’t any different. 60 tracks in 60 minutes is no easy feat, and doing it well is even harder. I think you’ll find this to be exactly what a dj mix should be; good fun with f-ing impeccable mixes and tracklist that anyone can enjoy without knowing anything about the music. Tracks like Fix Your Accent, Pon De Floor and We Speak Americano make sure the mix tape is accesible to a broad audience but the depth of the tracks is what makes this mix, with Jack Beats and MC Dynamite, Boy 8 Bit, Riva Starr Renaissance Man. Then there are the novelty remixes like Crookers’ remix of Nelly Furtardo’s Maneater, classic good times! Def listen/download this mix from soundcloud, full tracklist after the jump…

This week Perthquake recommends…

James Holden @ Ambar (Fri 23/7)

Keen for some techno? Democracy events are the principle place hear techno and their reputation is always upheld. Head down to Ambar for the progressive sounds of James Holden. Support comes from Declan, Aarin F, James Francis and Progress Inn.

Jack In The Box feat. Shockone @ The Republic (Sat 24/7)

A new night begins at The Republic. Amnesia and NVS have teamed up to bring a night  of late 80s, through to underground anthems, iconic hits and some of the freshest beats of New House on offer today. They’ve invited Shockone and Defeat down to help them out, so there’s going to be a large amount of local talented concentrated in one place! Definitely worth it.

Major Break 7 @ Villa (Sat 24/7)

What do I say here?! It’s pretty self-explanatory that this is going to be a busy and great event. NAPT, Black Noise and Peo De Pitte are masters of breaks, but none of them are limited to breaks. Just go to their soundclouds and you’ll see they’re artists with no lack of talent! I highly advise attending Major Break.
