New Years Day 2011 saw the well suited Salt on the Beach venue transform itself into an Ibiza feel summer house haven. Sebastien Leger and Digitalism headlined the event with strong support from local acts spread among two stages.

It could be assumed the majority of punters were there to see Digitalism considering this was when the crowd was visually busiest. Digitalism played an interesting and slightly surprising tech-house influenced dj-set, sprinkling a few of there own tracks in to boot such as idealistic and pogo. After speaking to a few of the party goers I had the feeling the people where expecting a little more indie-dance orientated music including a few more Digitalism tracks but were still happy with what was delivered.

Local act’s kept both dance floors happily moving throughout the day with house and tech house being the primary influences.

By the time Sebastien Leger was due to play at 8:45pm, it would seem the 37 degree weather had taken it’s toll on some of the party goers and the crowd had thinned out a little. This by no means stopped Sebastien Leger stepping up to play a great mix of tech-house, house and techno that kept everyone moving. He started with a summery tribal tech feel consistently using effects and keeping a variety of tracks running together. Halfway through his set Sebastien moved things up into the slightly harder techno drum roll sounds but pulled it back to the safe and summery tech vibes to finish. Mad Clinic by Max Bett was one of the highlight tracks played from the set.

Jus Haus? Brought things to a close after Sebastien with his signature heavier sounds combined with quick mixing which proved to do well with the crowd.

All in all it was a great day that everyone seemed to be happy to be there enjoying the summer house sounds by the ocean. Once again another successful Paradiso NYD. Over and Out.

Miles Dyson is one of those rare talents that comes along and shows the world exactly how it is done. He’s playing Villa this Saturday night (event info here, tickets here). Starting from a very early age, he was always destined for massive things. Securing his first club residency at the age of 15, performing to a 400,000 strong crowd in the famous Zurich St parade at the age of 16, it was clear very early in the piece that he had a passion for music and was on a mission to do big things with it. In 1999 he went on to win the European DJ Championships and from then on it has been a steep climb to the upper echalons of dance music success and superstardom.

His dynamite production skills and infectious energy on stage have seen him win acclaim from all over the world, and rightly so. Having toured the world relentlessly for a number of years, Miles Dyson is a name renowned across the globe for destroying dancefloors and bringing the party with his unique sound, combining bass heavy house, electro, techno and breaks and delivering it with a style and finesse few can match. He is no stranger to Australia or Perth for that matter, most recently here for Breakfest last december (where he had the Belvior Amphitheatre in a frenzy and begging for more), he has graced our shores numerous times since the early days of Destination? and is a favourite among perth partygoers seeking to get their groove on and be educated on all things that sound phat.

Along the way he has not only released tunes on the Destination? label itself, but also established his own publishing and production company (Plasmapool media entertainment), digital distribution company (plasmapool.digital), with more than 50 exclusive international artists signed and 12 labels (12″boot, 12.inch.recordings, Aelaektropopp, Boyztownrec, Houserecordings, International Porn Recordings, Plasmapool Productions, PlasmaUS, PlasmaWhite, plasma.digital, Raise33 and Suicide Robot)! Miles Dyson and Plasmapool are becoming one of the most successful institutions in the music scene. Plasmapool is now one of Europe’s leading vinyl and mp3 selling companies.

An absolute stalwart of the dance music scene, Miles Dyson @ Villa is a gig not to be missed, and once that is likely to be talked about for a long time to come!

With a busy schedule of tours around the globe, dance music lovers in Perth will be lucky enough to experience the sounds of Hernan Cattaneo on April 25 at Perth’s very own home of the underground – Ambar.

An underground legend in the electronic dance music scene, Hernan has had the opportunity to showcase fans his passion and emotion that is involved with his music, which has resulted in DJ sets lasting for 6 hours.

To find a little more information about what Hernan is about, read below his biography which has been taken directly from his website – http://www.hernancattaneo.com

Born in Buenos Aires, Hernán grew up listening to bands like Simply Red, Level 42, Depeche Mode and New Order whilst carefully studying Billboard magazine, the only source of information that was readily available at the time. In 1987, one of his friends visited Vinylmania in New York and returned with some vinyl –Hernán’s first exposure to Chicago House. In that moment, Frankie Knuckles, who should have a huge influence on Hernán and his blossoming career, broke into the scene and quickly became an icon of the incipient house genre. The way Frankie Knuckles and artists like Inner City and Derrick May brought together the energy of european electronic music with the soul of North American music left an impact on Hernán and set the tracks for his career. His elemental understanding of dance music might be the reason why he could firmly position himself amongst the most respected DJs of the world.

In the middle of the Nineties, Hernán had become the cultural force of the dance music movement that was still in its infancy in his country. As a resident in Clubland Buenos Aires, his talent was quickly recognized and his name soon associated with the most respected figures of dance, such as Paul Oakenfold –turning into one of his closest friends as their relationship evolved-, Sasha, John Digweed and Danny Tenaglia.

Clubland soon grew to be one of the renowned clubs in the world. Hernán’s eclectic deep house, tribal and progressive sets attracted the attention of the superclub Cream who then chose Hernán to become their southamerican resident. His career took off in 1996 and 1997 when both years he won a local award of “DJ of The Year” and, after joining Paul Oakenfold on his European tour, a lot of doors were opening for him. Playing universities and clubs all over Britain and mainland Europe, he managed to stun his receptive audience with his passionate sets and his impeccable mixing techniques. Consequently, he got signed to Oakenfold’s label Perfecto with whom he released his first ever international mix CD South America.

It was again down to Oakenfold that Hernán, in 98 and 99, traveled to the United States and was invited to a row of prestigious events and festivals such as Burning Man, in Nevada and the Red Rocks Amphitheater, in Denver. Immediately after that, he was made resident in Cream Liverpool as well as in Ibiza and started touring all around the globe.

In summer 2001, Hernán could already look back on an extensive string of important events and festivals, such as the Clapham Common festival in London, where he played in front of 70,000 people, Creamfields, Homelands, as well as the Cream birthday party in Liverpool. By that time, Cattáneo also entered the DJ Mag ranking, firmly positioning himself on number 50 as well as on the cover of the magazine. That same year his track Deep Funk hit the charts on number 50, he was voted “Best Newcomer DJ” at the prestigious Pacha Ibiza Awards, and started his own radio show on the argentinean radio station Metrodance (95.1 FM). Less than a year later, Hernán moved into the Top 25 of the DJ Mag ranking.

Hernán’s career was now accelerating at light speed. He did not only continue to wow the masses in the best clubs and most prestigious festivals of the world, he also continued to leave a mark as a producer, making a stunning remix for Morgan Page which went out on Bedrock, John Digweed’s well-respected label. As well as producing in conjunction with Subliminal -and Yoshitoshi- favorite Dean Coleman, he went into the studio with the prolific John Tonks who would later become his production partner and with whom he also made another noteworthy production such as the remix of the techhouse track Heron Castle.

With the objective to make the most out of his success, Hernán decided it was the perfect moment to put out another mix CD. Luckily enough, he got snapped up by Rennaissance who at that time were looking for an adequate successor for their Masters Series, which focusses on the presentation of the most talented global DJs, such as Sasha, John Digweed, Deep Dish and Danny Howells, among others. With great enthusiasm, Hernán exceeded all expectations.

The year 2004 turned out to be one of the most intense in his burgeoning DJing career. He traveled all over the world promoting his Renaissance mix album; played at the best clubs in Europe, toured five times to the United States and three to Asia. At the same time, he began an active participation on the media, taking on assignments as music reviewer in the North American music publications URB Magazine and BPM and on Rolling Stone’s latin-american edition. At the end of the year, he found himself on position number 6 in DJ Mag’s ranking.

By the beginnings of 2005, Hernán released the anticipated second part of Renasissance’s Master Series –being the first ever DJ asked to do a another volume for the label– which included a track called Warsaw with John Tonks, consequently put on on Bedrock, and a remix on Jeff Bennett’s Strange Items, which hit the number one spot in Mixmag’s Update. The same year, Hernán began another world tour. The highlights of this restless four-cities-per-week tour included shows in the United States where Hernán performed alongside the likes of the Chemical Brothers and New Order, and at Coachella festival with headliners such as Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails, Prodigy and Kasabian.

In May 2006, Hernán launched, again through Renaissance, his own CD series called Sequential which, so far, has earned him only top rankings in the world’s leading music publications: it scored five out of five stars and “Leading Player” in DJ Mag, full rating in UK’s M8, and “4 out of 5 –the best compilation Hernán’s ever made” in IDJ Mag. One of the top tracks is Hernán’s rework of Nick Miur’s I Feel Real. Sirocco, Hernán’s new single, again produced with studio partner John Tonks, turned out # 1 in the Balance Chart and top five downloads of www.djdownloads.com

With an eclectic mix of tracks that includes a whole variety of house rhythms and productions from artists such as Way Out West, Marco Bailey, Paolo Mojo, 16 Bit Lolitas, Dousk, Bushwacka and a remix for Phonique featuring Royksopp’s Erlend Øye, his first installation of Sequential has become essential. The selection of tracks is not only utterly tasteful but also manages to transcend genres with each track having its own distinct sound and feel to it, united by a stimulating bassline and subtle breakdowns.

For the cover artwork, Renaissance managed to win the acclaimed photographer John Ross who has previously worked with Kylie Minogue, The Manic Street Preachers and Deep Dish. This attention t detail as a finishing touch makes Sequential a delight appealing to all senses.

Hernán continues, in it’s fifth consecutive year, attracting a global audience through his own radio show on Metrodance (Saturdays 22 to 24 hrs) www.metro951.com

It was the long coming anticipated wait for the east coast brand – The Likes Of You – to finally come to Perth and grace one of our lucky clubs. With such a big scale event stampeding its way to the west, hosting not one, not two, but three high calibre international techno DJ’s – one would only presume that it would be hosted by no other than Perth’s very own infamous event venue, Villa. Full interview after the jump…

Upon walking up to the event at around 10:30pm, the streets seemed to be quite empty, with no line and lots of parking, it’s only natural to expect this at such an early stage. When I got inside the doors, there was already a small crowd circulating the main bar drinking, conversing, and having a little dance to the sounds of our very own, AarinF.

Being the only local to support such an overwhelming event, AarinF sure did not disappoint with his selection of deep and funky tech-house/techno tunes to accommodate the early crowd, who could still enjoy a dance and a chat with their mates, without being drowned out by loud music at such an early stage.

I thought Aarin’s set flowed quite nicely, and the tunes were well suited to the timeslot that he was appointed with. His set was constantly slowing building up as the minutes ticked by, where towards the end of his set, he had already accomplished having a small group of people not being shy to have a dance.

Before you knew it, it was already time for the first international – Seth Troxler – to take over the stage. While it still was fairly early in the night, Seth started off his set and took it down a notch to play some of what I describe as, really soulful & deep house tracks. This went down perfectly for not only the start of his set to build off, but also for the time slot, being 11pm.

Soon after Seth had commenced his set, and a trip to the bathroom, I walked out to what seemed a much more dense crowd than what I had originally seen. It was great to see more and more people slowly flowing through the doors for this event, along with more people slowly migrating to the dance floor. It wasn’t long til Seth decided it was time to pick his set up, where he started to slowly pick up the pace as each new track was mixed in.

From originally starting off with his selection of soulful & deep house, he then kept the same strategy but applying it to a more bumpy and tech-house sound, still incorporating the soulfulness of his opening tracks – this really seemed to get the crowd going, as come 12am, the dance floor was already packed with punters whistling and cheering for a very well deserved Seth Troxler, which I might add was one of the highlight sets of my night.

The second international to grace the podium was none other than Irish techno phenomenon, Phil Kieran. While he only had an hour to show Perth what he was about as opposed to Seth’s two hour set, he sure didn’t waste any time into getting the party started.

As some of you may know, Phil Kieran brought his live A/V show over to Perth to not only perform a live set consisting of all his own productions, but to also control all the accompanying visuals that went with it.

His live set consisted of two drop down screens either side of the podium, along with two TV’s located either side of his setup, all while wearing his infamous A/V glasses. I must say this sure was very exciting to watch, as from what I’ve seen, nothing similar has really been done in Perth.

Kieran’s set was hard, and I’m not talking Chemistry T.E.E. exam hard, I’m talking hard as f*****g concrete. For me, it was a massive change in atmosphere following on from Troxler, and I personally wasn’t expecting the intensity of his set, which could of probably been measured by a Richter Scale.

In my opinion, I thought his set was a little too hectic for the mood I had been placed in, let alone the time slot, but I think this is more of a personal opinion, as there were still a lot of people on the dance floor enjoying this unique experience.

I think the hour time slot he was given was perfect, as if it did go over, then I think my mood would have changed, but then again hearing other responses from attendees, it wasn’t long enough.

After Kieran’s live A/V show concluded, it was finally time for the man of the hour, or event I should say, being the third, and final international on the bill, was no other than Oliver Huntemann.

Having three hours to bless us with his presence, Oliver certainly did his best to keep the crowd entertained, and intensify what was already a lovely vibe. Starting off his set a lot softer than Kieran, was the most understandable decision as he had a whole three hours to work on, and he certainly smashed the expectations of punters throughout his whole set.

At this moment in time, you could possibly relate Huntemann to the likes of a German techno lecturer, portraying his vision and long time experience of this German techno sound to a mesmerised class of West Australian party-goers – and what an experience it was!

Playing a lot of his own productions mixed with some superior underground tunes, along with his flawless mixing and choice of tracks, he did nothing but impress the Perth crowd and live up to the high expectations that was anticipated from him.

Although I was unable to stay for his whole set, the few hours that I was lucky enough to experience was well worth it, and from what I hear, it looks like I missed out.

To finally wrap up this essay of a review, I must say that The Likes Of You was surely an event that will not be forgotten by many. With such a colossal line up of international DJ’s and great music, punters got every cent they paid for out of this event without a doubt.

It’s been in Perth a few times before and all I’ve heard has been great things. Although I don’t have an official press release, I can tell you the focus is genuinely on alternative music, and artists who are pushing boundaries in their fields, who are still able to be crowd pleasers, like The XX, Mumford and Sons, N.A.S.A., Florence and The Machine, Radioclit and The Middle East. If you want the full lineup it’s after the jump.

I’ve been meaning to do this interview since November 2009, so now that I’ve finally become organised it’s here. You may have seen Daniel Njegich at clubs shooting photos, you may have seen some of his phenomenal work for Pigeon hole or you may have visited his site and seen all that and more. Read the full interview after the jump, and make sure you check out the site.

dn photography (website)

What got you into photography?

It was quite random, I borrowed my dads school camera, and took it down to take some photos at my cricket match, I got really into it from then. I was finding it hard to get a permanent job in Events Management (what I studied prior) so I decided to study photography & journalism at ECU.

And how did you afford the first camera? I mean those things are so expensive, I’m always curious to know if you had to front the cash of your own and take a big risk if you didn’t like it!

Yeh they are pretty expensive, a tax return bought my first camera, I then down the track, sold it and saved some cash up and bought a new one, the one I haven’t at the moment, it’s a beauty. The most expensive part about photography is the lenses though, they burn a hole in the pocket.

What have you been working on recently?

I just completed my first wedding last weekend, that was a great experience and a hard one, I have a few more booked over the next few months. Im just building my portfolio at the moment, doing a lot of fashion shoots and working with Rock-A-Frock, an online boutique.

Is it competitive finding work in the photography industry?

Hype and false economy. Everyone is doing it (blogging, photography, graphic design) but quality isn’t there most the time. Do it yourself culture has been so permeated that pro’s will find it difficult to find clients who are willing to fork out big bucks for quality work”. I don’t class myself a fulltime professional, as yet. But I still think I give a good service and quality work, You have a lot of semi-professionals who charge ridiculously cheap prices, and in times like now, customers want cheap, but don’t always get quality.

And other than being talented, how do you make sure you stand out?

I have a website (www.dnphotography.com.au) I have a facebook group and a blog. I guess its hard to stand out in a creative field, especially being young in a predominantly older field. But hopefully in years to come, I will stand out for my work I have done.

A couple of shots under the ‘dn photography’ section on your site are black and white except for the main focus of the picture. If you took away the ability to use Photoshop, how much would it impact on your creativity?

Yeh it would impact a bit, but for a photo to be successful, it has to be done correctly behind the viewfinder, interesting and catch the viewers attention. Photoshop is a great piece of software, but isn’t the be all & end all in photography, there are many great photographs before Photoshop. I think without photoshop, it would make me strive to make the picture better without post production.

And for someone like me who doesn’t know anything about photography, is Photoshop making a hard job easier, so less talented people can do it well?

I’m no expert in photoshop, and im learning new things everyday, but as I said earlier, a photo has to be perfected behind the camera before you can make adjustments on a computer. Everyone can take a good photo, and most people know the minimal needs of Photoshop, so I guess it is becoming easier to take photos & edit them. When I take photos, especially fashion, I spend anywhere from 1-4 hours on an individual photo.

To end, four related questions…

What’s the best shoot you’ve done?

In terms of outcome, the shoot I just completed recently with Sheridan Savage, was some of the best work I have produced

What’s the worst shoot you’ve done?

My first portrait shoot I had with a family, we arrived at Hyde Park, and it wasn’t the best weather, I got all set up and my camera would just not work, we had to reschedule for the week after, quite embarrassing, especially when I got home & it was something so minor.

What’s the most enjoyable part of any job?

You have to love what you do, I am always thinking of new things to take photos of, new ideas, writing them down and just taking random photos of anything & everything. If you don’t love your job, then you will be miserable. You gotta do it for the love, not for the money.

And what’s the worst part of any job?

In terms of photography, I guess the long hours in front of a computer screen, is the worst part of this job. But besides that, I
enjoy everything I do when im holding a camera, its fun and captures moments, people cherish forever.

Thanks for doing the interview and we’ll keep an eye on your site for more great photos!

Summadayze was ridiculously hot, I know this review is meant to be about the music, but damn it, the heat was a major player that day and it deserves a mention. So to the sun; you fuckin’ shone man, you shone all fuckin’ day long, not even a cloud could get in your way, the dudes with water hoses had no chance.
Stand out for the day for myself was hands down James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, they bought the Disco heat when everyone thought it couldn’t get any hotter. It was great to see a solid crew hang around for the duo’s set which fortunately didn’t just stick to the Nu-Disco, the boys brought out plenty of older Disco which still managed to keep people dancing. Hopefully this is a sign that Perth isn’t too late to catch onto the Disco craze which has been doing the rounds around the world for a while now.
Before Murphy and Mahoney came on Fake Blood was absolutely destroying a very enthusiastic gathering with his signature sound. The mad fiends in the crowd were losing their shit despite audibly crackling in the sun. It was a bit disappointing that Fake Blood didn’t bring out any of the Disco House styled sounds that we’re present on his last EP, perhaps realising that Murphy and Mahoney were on after he decided to leave the disco to them.
Managed to catch a bit of Sebastian Leger, I haven’t really delved deep into this guy’s sound, but what I heard sounded really good, he was playing some Tech House kind of stuff when I caught him, and the crowd was lapping it up. There was also a massive air-con unit in the tent which was rather pleasant.
Wandered over to the main stage to catch the Presets and got to see the tail end of Roger Sanchez’s set, again I’m not well versed in this area of House music, but Sanchez seemed to be doing the right thing by the crowd you seemed oblivious to the fact that they were melting in the sun.
The Presets took to the stage and everyone was upstanding, they returned the crowds kudos with an extremely polished set that wasn’t devoid of any feeling. The sound was a bit dodgy at the start which could have been due to a bit of a breeze, but it was quickly sorted out and everything was coming through loud and clear. The Presets have got their live show down to a tee, Julian Hamilton’s vocals sounded crisp especially for an outdoor event, and Kim Moyes managed to smack the shit out of his drum kit without any loss of form.
All together the festival was run pretty well as far festivals go; short lines for drinks and toilets, no sound clashes between stages, and everyone basically started more or less on time. Summadayze normally seems to be a pretty tightly run operation and this year was no exception.
