“I love big, ambiguous Perth events that not very many people go to,” remarked my companion dryly as we gazed around the lackluster event masquerading as a beer festival on Saturday, January 20. Having become interested after the inclusion of Seth Sentry in the live lineup (faithful Perthquake readers will know that your humble reviewer is rather infatuated with Mr Rubbery Bacon), it seemed reasonable to hope that the day would bring a few laughs and some good music.

Not so much.

What exactly was so wrong about the Perth Beer Festival? Was it the disturbing sight of quasi-drunk parents chasing after their bored, rowdy offspring because, for reasons unknown, an event dedicated solely to the appreciated of alcohol was aimed at families? Was it the fact that all the reasonably priced beers were so pedestrian you could be at any festival, or even a not-so-flash pub? Was it the fact that with the exception of Seth Sentry, the live lineup seemed to consist entirely of weird cover bands (and yes, a reggae version of JT’s Cry Me A River is just as messed up as you think it is)? Was it the fact that there was no documentation explaining the order of the live schedule, and none of the festival staff were any assistance in the matter?

In the end, after three hours sitting in the freezing wind, drinking overpriced James Squire beers (turns out there is something more of a rip-off than the Generous Squire afer all), and unable to discover if we had in fact missed Seth Sentry’s set, we called it a day and went to Arts Martial’s EP launch instead. It was awesome.

The lesson here is, the Perth International Beer Festival is a waste of time and money. Go and see good local music instead. The end.

You know that “other” feeling when you have experienced something truly awesome? You have spotted that the neighbour’s pool, braved a risky fence climb only to be rewarded by a cool refreshing dip and respite from the hot wheather. Unfortunately this great pleasure is tarnished by the fact that all you friends have decided it would be more wise to huddle around a pedestal fan and complain that it is hot. You end up getting pissed off (despite enjoying yourself) because they are missing out, and, of course the moment would be so much better if everybody could experience it, right?
Friday night Perth was invaded by the eclectic stylings of one, Marcus Lamkin ie. Shit Robot at Republic. I was lucky enough to check this guy out last week in Sydney and was truly blown away by the way he confidently walked the line between genres like disco, house and tech. The dance floor was jumping and everybody had a super night. I know Perth is a smaller city but think we can shit all over places like Sydney with our balls out, go nuts ethos to party-ing.
Well on Friday things started pretty slow to say the least, the support of Petrosex, Micky Juice and FuckingMidas tailored a hearty mix of some you your more “darker” disco and house but it seemed in vain as it was all before midnight as we are now too aware of the infamous 12 o’clock Sexy Republic rush. Shit Robot took to the booth at 12:30am and launched into more up beat and funky set then the one I heard over East, spinning classics like “Heaven’s in the backseat of my Cadillac” by Hot Chocolate. After warming the modestly filled dance floor up, he moved off on some really cool tech house tangents scattered with creamy servings of disco. The 2-hour set truly had something for everybody swinging from all the great echelons of dance music; from piano house, to funk, to italo, to acid, even some breaks, to some spine melting bubble bass originals (coming out in March on DFA, did I mention he is on DFA?). The incredible bass sound he got in these tracks, he explained that he made, by running a Roland sh-101 through a broken effects pedal, fucking awesome.
So in light of my analogy at the top, I had an awesome night but the thin crowd (who still went pretty nuts on those strip poles) really detracted from fantastic event it could have been. I felt that people where really selling themselves short by not checking this guy out whether it was not having the coin, being over stimulated by this festival weekend or just opting to go to another clone night at Amps instead, people should really reflect on the fact that we can’t complain there is nothing to do in Perth, because there is, but there wont be much longer if we don’t make the effort. I see a lot of hard working defeated promoters in this city scratching their head, soon they are going to start passing on the great artists that come to this city and Perth will become another Adelaide that usually gets the hop skip and jump.
End rant.
Shit Robot was the shit!

Colin Barnett has boldly proposed a new plan aimed at decreasing ‘crime,’ in Perth. The idea is to allow police to stop and search anyone, without suspected criminal activity, in Northbridge, Fremantle and beaches Mullalloo and Scarborough. The new legislation allows police to stop and search people (and vehicles) in these areas without having to prove reasonable suspicion that a crime has taken place. Barnett claims they’re going to be targeting people carrying weapons and drugs, I’m not sure they’re going to be able to tell who has a concealed weapon or drugs? These searches are aimed at being non-intrusive. I’m not entirely sure what is considered to be non-intrusive if they expect you’re concealing something? These searches are aimed at protecting families inn Northbridge. I’m not sure how many families are out in Northbridge and how many are the victims of violence whilst there?

Before you leave imagine the following… You’re a young designer who’s just started a job you’ve been dying to do. You’re out in Northbridge and the police want to stop and search you. Funnily enough your boss walks passed as you are being padded down. What do you say on Monday morning and how will your boss react?

As Heads will roll points out, where does this stop? If you’re concerned about your rights, there is information on who to voice your opinion to after the jump and a link to the facebook group directly below.
