Grizzled feat. Nero, Foreign Beggars, Trolley Snatcha & Skism

What: Grizzled feat. Nero, Foreign Beggars, Trolley Snatcha & Skism

Where: Villa

When: 25 April 2011

Cost/Ticket details: $55-65+bf, Perthquake store

Knowledge Music and Grizzled proudly present the first installment in the ultimate bass party series.

Big Acts, Big Bass, Big Venues.

For our debut show we are proud to welcome back Nero after their earth shaking electro/dubstep infused set at the sold out Origin NYE. With releases such as “Me and You” on Chase & Status’s MTA records cracking into the top 10 in the UK charts the dubstep heavy weights were an obvious choice for our opening party.

Hailing from across the world these guys have collaborated with more people that you can poke a stick at. With a swag of new tunes under their belt the boys have a lot to live up to as their recent collaborations with Noisia and Skism have made waves across the internet. Widely known as one of the most energetic performances on the circuit, the Foreign Beggars are poised to show us how to truly get grizzled.

All the way from the Midlands of the UK Trolley Snatcha returns to deliver some of the filthiest bass music known to man. Since bursting on the scene through Caspa’s “Dub Police” Trolley had only gone from strength to strength since remixing the infamous sweet shop. Now with armed with literally a stack of chest punchin bass fueled monsters I think its safe to say Villa’s sound system is going to cop a hiding from this badman.

Head honcho of Never Say Die Records Skism is our final guest. This guy blew the roof of bar open when the element unknown crew first brought this guy to Perth. With huge collaborations with Datsik and Foreign Beggars plus shit loads of personal releases it couldn’t of been too soon to get him back. An incredible DJ and Producer his reputation proceeds him and frankly makes him the perfect addition to the Grizzled debut.

Supported by the local bad man Dr Space.

Great-Vibrations

From a day that I had envisaged lack of atmosphere due to the last minute decision to slash the ticket prices in half, the festival itself actually turned out with better vibes than I had imagined. Full review after the jump…

We arrived at 3:30pm and at first the crowds seemed dismal considering the lack of numbers on the main stage where 3 piece band Fenech-Soler were kicking out indie rocking tunes from every last bone in their body. It seemed the majority of the crowd however were heaving to the electro sounds of Kill the Noise in the Laundry tent just next door. He played well known festival tracks for most of his set and finished up with some slightly dubstep influenced electro slammers of which acted as a chocolaty bassriddled treat to my ears.

Sidney Samson then stepped up both literally and metaphorically as he seamlessly mixed well known party tunes with catchy riffs and of course his signature ‘Dutch house sound’ to great atmospheric success. We managed to fit in a little bit of Erykah Badu’s set before she finished at 5:30pm only to find her deep soulful sound a little too relaxed for the festival environment. Back to the Laundry tent we trudged to enjoy the beats produced by Fake Blood whom set followed Sidney Samson’s with slightly less energy.

After pulverising our legs into the ground we thought it was time to take a break and make our way over to the roots stage where the scent of marijuana and reggae drum beats pulled us in closer. This was of course Fat Freddy’s Drop a psycadelic 7 piece reggae band from NZ who to me gave the standout performance of the entire day. Interacting with the crowd and providing the perfect ‘good-vibing’ atmosphere prior Nas & Damian Marley. They decided to play one of their most popular songs ‘The Wondering Eye’ to the already buttered crowd at the very end which only took people to a euphoric wonderland where in almost every direction I looked I saw smiles of enjoyment.

Local dj Samurai then scratched together a ‘full clip’ 15 minute selection of hiphop beats new and old as the change over between bands and gear occurred.  The only comment I would make about this guy was he scratched a little too frequently causing complete halt in movement at times. It took us about 30 minutes to shuffle our way to the front of the crowd for Nas and Damian Marley’s performance but we got to there just in time.

Accompanied by drummer, pianist and female soul sisters who could shake and bounce booty like no other they opened with full electricity. ‘As we enter’ had the entire crowd jumping as the singers interchanged waving the Jamacian flag with pride. This energy didn’t stop through-out as they continued to play songs from their collaboration album with great triumph. It was a pity that during such a great performance over 3 fights broke out in front of us which killed the vibe at times but purely due to crowd stupidity.

We left after an hour of great music and moved back to Sasha to get our dance on. I wish I was able to witness the entire journey but it seemed he had the entire tent rammed and filled with people frothing at the sight of the impressive lighting show and the sounds of his endlessly well respected techno sound.

By this point we stumbled towards a disappointingly sized mainstage crowd prior Faithless of which miraculously 10 folded size minutes after the almost alien like singer graced the stage. Indeed a great performance from great experienced performers however I found it a little difficult to get into the 90’s sounds at times.

I wanted to see Rusko after being blown away by him and his stage presence twice before in clubs in the UK only to be slightly disappointed by his somewhat predictable and safe set playing his own tunes and big dubstep releases that have already been heard. Still a great set but I think I’ve been spoilt and had my expectations a little too high.

We finished the gargantuan day by passing out on the grass listening to the smooth rockin sounds of French band Phoenix.

All in all an impressive day with a variety of lineup that was able to please almost any punter’s musical needs.

Laidback Australia Day

Australia Day for most is usually celebrated with the likes of barbeques, beers and other eventful activities. This year, local promoters Limelite decided to break away from the traditional revelries that most of us are habituated with to bring us Dutch House maestro, Laidback Luke to headline their Australia Day party at Salt on the Beach. Return to where it all began

There couldn’t have been a better way to conclude what was another stellar year in Perth for drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep music than Origin New Years Eve. Over the last twelve months we’ve had some amazing artists from each genre visit our shores and rock the shit out of our clubs and on the final eve of 2010 Origin was set to take it up yet another notch. This year saw the event scale back from the more typical festival set up of the previous two years and return to it’s home, the magical Belvoir Amphitheatre – a change welcomed by many. Break it down for the full review.

Sebastien Leger & Digitalism Turn Club into Paradiso

New Years Day 2011 saw the well suited Salt on the Beach venue transform itself into an Ibiza feel summer house haven. Sebastien Leger and Digitalism headlined the event with strong support from local acts spread among two stages.

It could be assumed the majority of punters were there to see Digitalism considering this was when the crowd was visually busiest. Digitalism played an interesting and slightly surprising

What: Whistla @ The Bird (Don't Sleeeep)

DJ, producer, radio station owner, record label owner, club promoter – Whistla is a busy  man. Fortunately he’s taking time from his busy schedule to play a few shows downunder. Whistla will be appearing at the third Don’t Sleeep party this Friday the 10th of December, this time in the intimate surrounds of the Bird on William street.

Whistla is at the forefront of the future garage sound currently blowing up in the UK and Europe. His tunes are groovy, fast and come with plenty of bass. He runs UK radio station Sub FM and L2S Records, one of the biggest labels in the sound and also runs London’s future garage night, Swivel. If you’ve caught word of the hype surrounding all this ‘future garage/UK funky/future bass’ sound and want to see what the fuss is all about for yourself, this is definitely the gig to check out as Whistla pretty much runs this shiz.

Local support comes from Pickles, Clunk, All State and DYP. Tickets are a steal at $15 on the door and are very limited so get down early! Doors open 8pm.

I’v heard nothing but good things about this guy who’s latest Shakedown remix was recently crowned as the highest selling track on Beat Port for the year to date!
