Democracy 3rd Birthday Presents Berghain feat Marcel Dettmann

What: Democracy 3rd Birthday feat. Marcel Dettmann

Where: Ambar

When: 17 September 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 20+bf, moshtix

In the years since its beginning, Democracy has sought to tread the line between forward thinking dance music and a good old fashioned dust on the floor rave up, so it’s fitting that for our 3rd birthday we have an artist who understands both.

Marcel Dettman; Rough, rugged and raw.

Mentioning Marcel Dettmann, as well as his feeling for and vision of electronic music, his way of dealing with it, is impossible without these attributes. Whether you take his DJ sets (Marcel has been made a resident DJ at the old Ostgut and also at Berghain from the very start), Dettmann’s productions for the self-conducted MDR label, his remixes for the likes of Fever Ray, Junior Boys, Modeselektor as well as Scuba, or if nothing else his debut long player for Ostgut Ton into account, all the various contrasts and distinctions that come with it are manifested in these qualities.

Techno as Marcel Dettmann defines it, is neither a movement without history nor wistful nostalgia. In the hands of the Berliner, the well-known game of hi-hats, bass lines and kick drums draws its tension and momentum from a historically grown tradition and the conscious decision to break the rules. Reformation and solid construction outplays the use of any gimmicks. Dettmann pours Detroit’s oil into European engines, puts British bass music under the control of Chicago’s very own Jack, cuts classics with abstract nuances and connects yesterday with tomorrow and today. In the unrelenting manner of a great DJ, he generates moods and connections that are age- and classless, but never irrelevant or tasteless. Marcel Dettmann links up the art of improvisation with careful preparation and finally gives techno some of its often painfully missed serious physical constitution back.

Bass Kleph @ Villa

What: Bass Kleph

Where: Villa

When: 18 September 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 15, door sales

He has one of the hottest, most in demand, individual sounds of now. An edgy take on jackin’ Tech / Electro & House that has one foot firmly in the underground, but with a pop sensibility that everyone can connect with, it’s somewhere between the melodic and the raw, but it always features a cool, sexy, ‘less is more’ approach. It’s become known as that Bass Kleph sound.

2010 has been a monumental year for Bass Kleph. His remix of Joan Reyes’s Shakedown went to number 1 on the Beatport charts and was recently crowned the highest selling track on Beatport to date this year. He was voted into the top 10 in the inthemix Australian DJ top 50 and has played dates across Spain, the UK, the US, Canada, Russia, China and headline slots at the Good Vibrations Festival. The continued success of his own labels – Vacation Records, and new sister label Exit Row has seen talent the likes of Wolfgang Gartner, Micky Slim, Mowgli, Hook n Sling, Stupid Fresh, Twocker, Tommy Trash, fRew, Dopamine all contribute to the label with the label’s fans stretching from the stadium players like John Aquaviva, Crookers, Rene Amesz, Mark Knight, and Kissy Sell Out to the brightest lights of the techno underground like Alex Kenji, Popof, and Fergie.
