Stacey Pullen @ Geisha

What: Stacey Pullen

Where: Geisha

When: 29 October 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 35+bf, perthquake store

He emerged as the next innovator in the second wave of Detroit techno and has risen to be a star of the genre. Pullen’s blend of house, garage and techno continues to influence many within electronic music.

Sounds like techno…

If it sounds like techno and has origins in Detroit, chances are it probably is techno. Detroit’s Stacey Pullen has continued to produce characteristic and atmospheric electronic sounds whilst championing the legendary reverberations that originated from America’s motor city.

Pullen describes himself as the Kosmik Messenger – an innovator from techno’s homeland. He’s emerged as a techno force, dropping material on Transmat, Metroplex as well as his own Black Flag outlet. He compounds his reputation as a producer with that of being one of the world’s most in demand DJs, playing weekly across the globe year in year out.

Around 1985, while Pullen was still drumming and travelling with his high school band, the Detroit techno movement was born and provided a revolutionary sound to the youth of Detroit. Jeff Mills was taking musical technology to new levels, redefining the borders between DJing and production in a way which had never been done before. The youth of Detroit, including Stacey, listened and learnt.

“Back then the music we called house music, techno, was also called progressive music – the meaning of ‘progressive’ was a futuristic way of thinking about music. That was what we called progressive. Back then for party music in Detroit only hip hop was big – music like techno was progressive.” Stacey Pullen.

Pullen grew up under the mentorship of Detroit’s legendary three: Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Back in early 1993, May – who spent most of his time outside the USA at that time – encouraged Pullen to perform across Europe to widen his audience. May subsequently invited Pullen to join him in Amsterdam for a month. That initial month became a year until Pullen moved in with May and together they toured Europe weekly, exposing the audience to Detroit techno.

Where: Geisha Bar

When: 3 October 2010

Cost/Ticket details: Tickets $20 plus BF from Moshtix, Planet Video, Mills Records and all Moshtix outlets

Deetron

As with many of the more dynamic turntablist-styled Techno and House DJs, Deetron took his early cues from Hip-Hop, before being won-over by the early sounds of Chicago and Detroit. His DJing – then still in its infancy – followed this influence, steering his ‘career’ in a more 4/4 direction – eventually landing him a resident spot at reputed Zurich club, Trax.

Deetron’s production career developed in tandem, as is often the case. Early work for labels such as Phont and Intec through the late nineties and 2000, saw Deetron finding his audience (including a string of International club jocks) and developing his own sound. In the last few years, Sam’s production touch has graced labels including Cosmic (as Karakter), Ongaku (the ‘Lorraine EP’), SLS and the classic Detroit styled ‘Miss Suave’ on Intec which has become a dancefloor anthem all over the world.

Joining Deetron in support:

Kid Deep

Having made his Democracy debut almost 2 years to the day supporting Deetron, Kid Deep returns not as a debutant but as one of the main players on the Perth 4/4 scene.

Satoshi Tomiie is, quite simply, Japan’s most successful International DJ and House producer. Satoshi’s music career began at an early age when his parents encouraged him to study the piano. He trained for an admirable ten years, developing a distinct passion for jazz. In school he played in various bands. Soon after, the sound of Hip Hop provoked him to not only form his own band but also to start his foray into DJ’ing and production. Then came house, as he became fascinated by the early Chicago mix-tapes he was hearing.

A Japanese cosmetic company asked Satoshi to produce a track for their forthcoming promo parties where legendary DJ Frankie Knuckles was performing. Knuckles saw the potential in Satoshi’s music and asked if he was interested in collaborating. The final result of their partnership was “Tears”, a defining moment in vocal house and a song now commonly regarded as an all time classic. Satoshi soon took the leap and moved to New York. Since his seminal hit “Tears” with Frankie Knuckles back in 1989, he hasgone on to become a major part of the acclaimed Def Mix crew. Through this relationship he has remixed and worked with the likes of Simply Red, David Bowie, U2, Mariah Carey, Misia (Japan’s #1 R&B artist), just to name a few.

A trip to the Hood

If you are a true fan of techno music, there should be no reason what-so-ever, if you weren’t at Geisha last Friday night to celebrate the Democracy team bringing in one of techno’s most influential legends of the scene – Robert Hood – for a mind blowing two hour set.
It’s not often here in Perth that you get to watch and experience a pioneer in the techno scene perform a DJ set in such an intimate club like Geisha, let alone playing the true techno sound that was established in Detroit long ago, which has been the backbone to the many styles and forms of techno that exists in today’s day and age.
The night was filled with pure underground sounds from start to end. I only managed to catch the last half of warm-up DJ, Alex Cooke’s set, and I must say, I wish I had come earlier as he was playing some outstanding tunes with great flow to warm-up for the main show.
When Robert Hood came on, it was like a Priest preaching to the Church of Techno. Hood followed on from Cooke’s set with ease, and there was no looking back. Hood’s set consisted of the purest of “old-school” Detroit techno where he managed to build his set up constantly in the two hours he was given, and he wasn’t afraid to get the party started either.
I haven’t seen Geisha that packed in a long time, and it was great to see such a good turnout for this event, as one would expect with such an influential member of the electronic dance music scene performing in such an intimate environment.

If you are a true fan of techno music, there should be no reason what-so-ever for you not to be at Geisha last Friday night to celebrate the Democracy team bringing in one of techno’s most influential legends of the scene – Robert Hood – for a mind blowing two hour set.

Democracy pres. Robert Hoot (M:Plant, Detroit)

What: Democracy pres. Robert Hood (M:Plant, Detroit)

Where: Geisha Bar 135a James Street, Northbridge, WA, 6003

When: 25 June 2010

Cost/Ticket details: $30 from Moshtix

Robert Hood needs little introduction. Founding member of the legendary group Underground Resistance as a ‘Minister Of Information’ with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks & Jeff Mills, his seminal works on Jeff Mill’s Axis and his very own M-Plant imprint paved the way for a wave of stripped-down dancefloor minimalism that directed much of techno’s path throughout the late Nineties. As Birmingham’s Surgeon once remarked, ‘When Hood released his pivotal ‘Minimal Nation’ EP in 1993, it was like a bomb went off.’

Robert Hood makes minimal Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. Having recorded for Metroplex, as well as the Austrian Cheap label and Jeff Mills’ Axis label, Hood also owns and operates the M-Plant imprint, through which he’s released the bulk of his solo material. As part of the original UR line up whose influential releases throughout the early and mid ’90s helped change the face of modern Detroit techno and sparked a creative renaissance. Infusing elements of acid and industrial into a potent blend of Chicago house and Detroit techno, UR’s aesthetic project and militant business philosophy were (and remain) singular commitments in underground techno. Hood left Detroit (and UR) with Jeff Mills in 1992, setting up shop in New York and recording a series of 12-inch Eps. He began to concentrate on his own production ‘Vision EP’, the ‘Riot EP’ and X-103 were big stepping-stones for him as they were the first releases he worked 100% on his own. The X-101 to X-102, were Waveform Transmission projects with Mills for Tresor. He slowly progressed to work more and more on his own, but collaberated on some of the first Axis releases with label owner Jeff Mills as H&M (Hood & Mills) with ‘Tranquilizer EP’ and ‘Drama’.

He soon decided it was time for him to start his own label to focus on what was in his soul musically.and set up M-Plant in 1994 releasing singles such as “Internal Empire,”, “The Protein Valve” “Music Data,” and “Moveable Parts. “M-Plant is what I’ve always wanted to hear: the basic stripped down, raw sound. Just drums, basslines and funky grooves and only what’s essential. Only what is essential to make people move. I started to look at it as a science, the art of making people move their butts, speaking to their heart, mind and soul. “It’s a heart-felt rhythmic techno sound. M-Plant is just M. minimal”
