Hierarchy

Hey People, I think its fair to say that Perth’s music scene is very minimal to say the least. Here is some proof that our scene is progressing!

Not only it is exciting to see a new event promotions company on the scene, they are focused purely on the underground, joining the likes of Lucid Dreaming, Democracy & Habitat. Now there is a HIERARCHY! They are also throwing a massive opening night party at Geisha (event info here) featuring internationally recognized superstar Paul Ritch who is headlining WE LOVE SOUNDS all through the east coast but not Perth, so here is your to experience it. From 2007, just a year after his debut production, his popularity has risen to incredible levels. Paul Ritch, currently based in Paris, has been intimately involved with the label founded by the German tech-house duo MRI Resopal Schallware. Paul’s first ever released track, Samba 12″ reached the public through this label. The success of this release led the way to other productions such as Winter Ceremony (2007), Natural Gun (2007), and Summer Ceremony (2007).

Paul Rich’s intense and prolific career has already proved his popularity on stage and recognition as a producer. Many of his EPs have been released on different labels such as Get Physical Music (Fortuna, June), Fumakilla (Back to the Time), Paradigma Musik (Higher) and MiniSketch (Nordbanhof). In 2007, his tracks were also included in nine internationally prominent Mix Albums such as John Digweed’s Transitions, Vol. 3, Gui Boratto’s Addicted, Vol. 2, Global Underground: Rio from Layo & Bushwacka! and M.A.N.D.Y’s Ibiza ‘07.

Paul is charectarised by an unrestricted capacity to produce. Under the name of Hadycraft in 2007 he also published (in collaboration with Okain) Le Bal Masqué 12″ EP on the label Kickboxer.
2008 has been a year to reap the rewards of his hard work and he has played in iconic festivals and clubs around the globe such as VMC (Miami), DEMF (Detroit), The End (London), Goa (Madrid), Amore Festival (Rome), Berghain (Berlin), The Pressure, (Glasgow) amongst many others.

Paul will see out 2008 with a South American tour where he will play in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay.

QUARTZ REC, Paul’s newest initiative, will be dominated by minimalists sounds, intense, deep and active, a vibe that characterises him.

Redshape @ Geisha

What: Redshape

Where: Geisha

When: 23 April 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 20+bf, moshtix

In early 2006 Techno’s own masked man Redshape appeared for the first time on infamous Dutch imprint Delsin records. This initial release “Shapedworld EP” kicked him into the international techno scene, getting support from all major DJ from day one.

Redshape soon developed his own individual view on modern dance music and set to leave a mark in Techno.

Since coming to prominence over the last few years, very few producers (with the exception of Carl Craig and a few others) have come close to matching his technofied mission, meaning each and every Redshape 12″ is held in high regard by the more discerning techno heads. His music brought him into the yearly toplists of German’s groove & De-bug as well as a lot of other magazines.

Trying to describe his sound is kind of a hard task, sitting somewhere between everything in dance music and Redshape’s own imagination you get a direct extract – not minimal, not maximal and always historical respecting the vibe of detroit.

Resident Advisor’s Pete Chambers once said “The future of the past never sounded more contemporary.” which perfectly surrounds redshapes musical vision.

Repeating is definitaly a thing Redshape works hard to prevent, so his live shows, which brought him to nearly every known European club, morph and developeverytime to never play the same show a second time.

As a DJ Redshape is still very inspired by the good old school of mixing and trying tomake tracks speak to tracks, making music out of music.

Redshape’s music and remixes have been released on labels like Styrax Leaves, Delsin, Music Man, R&S etc. not forgetting his own imprint “Present Recordings”.

Working together with Delsin Records he will release his debut “The Dance Paradox” in October 2009, April 2010 the masked man of Techno makes his first visit to Australia and plays @ Geisha Bar on Friday 23rd April for Democracy.

Music review

The Gui of the year, so far ..

Last Sunday, Democracy presented Brazilian Techno superstar Gui Boratto at Geisha Bar. On the way there, I was having a friendly discussion with a friend on how the night would turn out. I came to conclusion to say regardless that it was a Sunday, I felt that the Perth underground music community would be in full colours that night packing out Geisha, to really appreciate some beautiful.

I rocked up to Geisha listening to the sounds of James Francis L.I.V.E, it was great turnout for Democracy as I thought it was the biggest crowd I’ve seen at Geisha. I was actually told by someone that James Francis actually is a real upcoming producer and plays most his own productions. Listening to some of the tracks he was playing got me really impressed with one track especially a great bass-line. Obviously as all supporting acts to international artists, they have keen BPM low and “groovin”. I thought James Francis fulfilled that role and it was good to see some local talent playing a live set, which is really something different.

When it was time for the Brazilian maestro to step up….. HE DID NOT DISSAPPOINT ! Gui made his intentions clear when he opened (im pretty sure it was the opening) with his track “Azzura” (It’s not the same mix). Beautiful in everyway you listen to it, from its symphonic melodies from the violins, to the vocals. A couple of tracks later, he mixed in “Take My Breadth Away” which really got the crowd stuck in to their dance.  I think Gui would have felt above the clouds that night, as the crowd there was the best I have seen. Every track he played was supported by almost everyone on the dance floor showing him love and appreciation with cheers and claps.

In turn Gui probably repaid the favour playing more & more classics. I distinctly remembered the crowd going crazy when “No Turning Back” was played. To hear the breakdown of this track on the big speakers of Geisha was a real experience. Other tracks I distinctly remembered was a lot of his tracks of his new album released my Renaissance, tracks like Trills, Azure, Milky Way & Beautiful Life.  Democracy was on the spot to have Gui at Geisha, as it was the atmosphere that really nailed it in for me. They promised an intimate night and they delivered! So far his performance, sets the bar pretty high in 2010. Maybe some artists at THE LIKES OF YOU stage at Future Music Festival can reach that same level? We’ll have to see.

Brazil’s biggest electronic musical export drops into Perth for round two of Democracy Live @ Geisha

Anyone who attended the Democracy 2nd Birthday at Geisha last year will know that they witnessed a set by Audion that was something special, Democracy now seek to recreate that when they present a special live set from Gui Boratto.

Gui Boratto

After sending a two track demo to Kompakt in 2005, Gui shot to prominence with the release of 12 inch ‘Arquipélago’ on K2, catalyzing a number of well received singles on labels such as Audiomatique, Plastic City and Kompakt’s Pop imprint.
Infusing a much needed dose of colour amidst the monochrome minimal landscape, his 2007 debut album ‘Chromophobia’ drew unanimous critical praise and sparked an avalanche of distinct productions and remixes.

With a style characterized by a combination of blissful pop sensibilities and complex dance floor arrangements, Gui soon developed a distinct aesthetic profile, aided by the live arrangement of his favorite tracks on the ‘Addicted’ compilation released on Platipus in 2007

As Brazil’s premiere techno export, Gui has developed a reputation for his relentless touring schedule, and has graced the stage of the most prominent clubs and festivals in the electronic music sphere both as solo performer and alongside Kompakt head Michael Mayer.

With the sophisticated sophomore album ‘Take My Breath Away’ dropping in early 2009 to huge critical acclaim, Gui shows no sign of slowing the momentum that has powered his ascent to the pinnacle of the electronic music community.

Chances to see artists of this calibre do not come often at venues as intimate as Geisha Bar, so don’t miss out.

Gabriel Ananda vs. Marcel Janovsky & Sebo K @ Geisha

What: Gabriel Ananda, Marcel Janovsky, Sebo K, Nina Van Dyke, Kid Deep,

Where: Geisha

When: 25 January 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 30+Bf, moshtix, moshtix outlets

Gabriel Ananda and Marcel Janovsky have been friends for years. During this time their bond has been strengthened by numerous gigs and performances. Now, their new project has landed and it doesn’t merely justify the hype, it goes beyond. This is not a first class back-2-back DJ set. It’s a 3 hour first class back-2-back Dj set. Whenever two artists like Gabriel Ananda and Marcel Janovsky pool their skills together, their performance is transformed into a unique and magical experience. Their style is refreshingly different from the common Techno mainstream and is ripe with a musical spirit well beyond Gabriel’s and Marcel’s versatile musical tastes. Connoisseurs of the unconventional will enjoy their straight and fiddly beats. Definitions become useless when Techno, House and Dub merge together during Gabriels and Marcels set, supplemented by a controller, loopsampler and effect machines. The guys know how to electrify a party with their performance and know how to bring the room under their spell.

Sebo K has long been a key figure in Berlin’s music community, starting his DJ career in the early 90s at Alec Empire’s Bass Terror nights, Berlin’s first UK-style breakbeat parties. By the mid 90s he had discovered his love for Chicago house and Detroit techno—a passion evident to anyone who has heard the vintage depths many of his tracks nod to—and at the turn of the decade began playing regularly at legendary clubs throughout Berlin. Now, thanks to his releases on the mobilee label, he’s becoming an unstoppable force in the electronic music scene. One of his first tracks for mobilee, “Rancho Relaxo”—in collaboration with Anja Schneider—was an instant classic, establishing Sebo (as well as the label itself) as an up-and-coming act worthy of extreme attention. To declare that Sebo has lived up to expectations would be an understatement to say the least.

Despite a relatively sparse discography of original productions, quality over quantity is the name of the game for Sebo K, with each of his productions—from his debut on mobilee to his most recent track, “Diva”—receiving universal acclaim from both DJs and critics alike and cementing his position as first-rate producer. His mix CD Back Up Vol. 01 introduced audiences far and wide to his mixing abilities, effortlessly bridging the worlds of minimal techno and classic deep house with one critic proclaiming it “house that sounds perfectly at home wandering through new provinces.” Alongside his now timeless original productions, Sebo has done remixes for some of the most respected labels and artists on the planet including Poker Flat, Mule Electronic, Radioslave, and Efdemin. Meanwhile, his tracks have appeared on a nearly uncountable number of compilations and mixes by DJs such as M.A.N.D.Y., Richie Hawtin, Steve Bug, Dennis Ferrer, Loco Dice, and Dixon.

His love for soulful, deep vibes combined with his ability to transition seamlessly between minimal techno and straight house—and an uncanny ability to blur the lines between the two—has reinforced the importance of house in an age seemingly inundated by techno lovers. His residency at Berlin’s Watergate in tandem with constant gigs at high-profile venues around the world has demonstrated that Sebo’s DJ abilities are on par with his exceptional production skills, and that his seemingly endless string of successes isn’t likely to end any time soon.
