Music review

The naked truth

Generally Sunday was a great day, despite a couple of acts withdrawing from the line-up there was plenty to keep me entertained. Gossip and Basement Jaxx were standout favourites (please read after the jump for the reasons why!), and I heard lots of people enjoyed Salt N Pepa. There seemed to be a general love of cheesy pop music throughout the day, with The Black Eyed Peas, Will.i.am, Beyonce, and even Survivor getting a few plays.

We started with Kid Cudi, who had an enormous crowd in front of a small stage, but maybe that added to the atmosphere of excitement. He belted out a few tracks in a row, with “Enter Galactic” drawing a huge response. even more than when he played “Day n Night.” I think a highlight of his set was when he screamed out I’m Kid Cudi, or something to that effect and everyone went mental? I think they already knew he was Kid Cudi, not sure how that works. He finished with “Pursuit of Happiness,” but the crowd had already began to leave to see Salt N Pepa, so the atmosphere was killed for my favourite track. The full review is after the jump…

Music interview

Z-Trip

A few weeks ago (around New Years, hence the somewhat-dated beginning), I had the chance to catch up with a legend amongst turntablists and DJs alike – Z-Trip. It’s a sad fact that I’ve never actually seen a Z-Trip set, but I will most definitely be catching him at Good Vibrations (site here) in a couple of weeks. He was really cool to talk to and made some valid points for all the people out there hating on DJ Hero as a cheap exercise that’s gonna produce a lot of crappy wannabe DJs. It’s pretty long so kudos to you if you stick with it! As always whole interview after the jump.

Happy New Years dude what did New Years 09/10 entail for Z-Trip?

I think for any DJ New Years is kinda like the Olympics. You train for the gig, it’s usually the highest paying gig of the year so for me I was in Vegas and I have a residency so I was there doing my thing. The cool thing was the next day I got to get down DJ Jazzy Jeff we did a little two by four at my residency on Friday so it was really, really good – the best way to start off a new year.

Friendly Fires

The Australian summer festival season rolls on, and before long Good Vibrations will be upon us (event website here). Arguably one of the most rock-friendly dance festival line-ups this summer, it’s shaping up to be another big one at its new home the Claremont showgrounds. I had the opportunity to have a chat with the drummer from one of those acts, Jack Savidge from Friendly Fires, about becoming such a popular band so quickly, their sophomore album and band DJ sets. Full interview on the other side.

Friendly Fires (Myspace)

You guys started out as a punk rock band in high school, was the change to your current sounds a gradual one?

It was kind of gradual I think at the time I suppose we were quite punky until like 18 or something but then we all kind of left the band alone for about three years only doing it very occasionally. In that time we got into dance music and wanted to do music that had a strong dance element and was kind of poppy as well.

Pretty massive line-up from a varied selection of genres! Pretty big and popular festival, so expect a massive crowd again. My money is on Aramand Van Helden (one half of Duck Sauce) for the most watched artist. You can expect a very very very large number of people are going to be hanging out for him to play Anyway. As I said last weekend to Troy, I think this track is going to go crazy over the summer and is already pretty popular. Full line-up after the jump…
