Last night I was pressed for time and had to drive from Mandurah to Freo to catch His Majesty Andre (HMA) play, and the long drive was worth it. I was afraid I’d miss some of his set, but I caught the end of Moe Steez and Master Dash warming up the crowd with plenty energy and blog tracks. When HMA hit the decks at 12.30 he played a little intro song and then got straight in Positif, god I love that track! He slowly worked his way through heaps of club and bass music, like Herve, Sharslayer, Dance Area, CLS – Can You Feel It (I don’t know this track that well, was this a big one at sometime?) Major Lazer – Pon De Floor, possibly my favourite track at the moment but maybe second to His Majesty’s track Peep Thong, which he played so I was happy. Before his set ended he was able to play Bad Boy For Life, I think that made my night! The most impressive part of HMA’s set was his ability to pick songs that could keep people dancing even if you didn’t know the track. I think with bass and club music this is the hardest thing to do, you can scare people away easily if it gets to heavy without something familiar, I’m not really sure what ‘familiar’ is though, it might be sirens, and the use of brass instruments in tracks, that seems popular at the moment and when you hear them it reminds you of really big popular tracks. Pseudo-psychology aside, it was a night worth attending and worth an hours drive to get there.
