Kissy doesn’t sell out

Friday night began very slowly. When it comes to Villa it’s easy to tell if the night is a big one, there’s usually a massive line, heaps of cars on the street and lots of noise. When I noticed all three of these things were absent I got a little worried, especially since I was arriving at 11.30.

When Clare (a friend of mine) and I walked in there was an empty dance floor and very few people sitting around on the couches. I didn’t check outside but I’m presuming there were a few people having a much needed smoke break. Clare hadn’t been to Villa before so it gave us a good excuse to go check out the VIP area, which was clearly the place to be because it filled up so quickly! I’m being serious here, it was packed, and we staked out a great seat, this turned out to be more of a hindrance to my night because I never went and took any photos! I did however focus on the dj sets and am hopefully able to convey the whole story after the jump…

Music interview

Kissy Sell Out

Thursday night y’all event info here! The man who brings you your Thursday night (12-2) BBC radio show is coming to Australia. Yep, that probably doesn’t mean much to many Australians, but there is this thing called the internets and you can stream his show there. Basically it’s a mix of what’s hot in ‘electro,’ and it’s a pretty lose definition as we’ve discussed before. His own production is very cool, and much more rock based, but still very easy to dance too. With regards to his Dj sets, Kissy says he likes to mix quickly and make a pretty pumping party set. To find out more about Kissy read the full interview after the jump…

Kissy began with a standard everyday question, ‘How’s the weather over there,’ but the cynical voice in which he asked it made me reply with a smarmy tone, ‘Oh it’s 25 degrees, sunny and going to be a great day!’

A whole year since Perth’s newest5 venue opened its doors and we’re celebrating with the return of one of Boomtick’s favourite nights, Tonight Only!. Episode 8 features Kissy Sell Out, HiJack and Solo.

Kissy Sell Out is your post-modern squeeze. Under the wing of Simian Mobile Disco, Headman, DJ Touché and the Loose Cannons; Kissy is our kinda guy. Take a few childhood memories of chasing the opposite sex at the local roller skating rink, mix it with a healthy Nirvana and Felix Da Housecat obsession and you’ve got one sweet sound. Melodically complex. 128 BPM. Youth. The ‘In DJs We Trust’ radio show host took over a year to give birth to his debut album, Youth. Intensely personal with tracks about his family, first kiss and drinking shenanigans, you can expect he’ll wear his heart on his sleeve while standing behind the decks at Villa. Mixmag called Kissy Sell Out, “One of the most exciting, charismatic and entertaining DJs of the decade”. No doubt.

And if you’re looking to bounce on funk-fuelled grooves with chunky beats and quirky hooks, HiJack’s your answer. An established name in the UK’s underground house scene, his sound fuses jacking house and techno, with samples from all musical eras and genres. Innovation – Tick. Vision – Tick. Award-Winning – Tick. Quality – Tick. Deliverance – Tick. Good Times – Tick. Boomtick. It’s James Brown meets N.E.R.D. – nice, huh? His debut EP was signed to the respected UK label On The Brink Recordings, delivering him immediate props. Two more original EPs have followed before the hugely successful ‘Jackpot EP’ (released on US label Potty Mouth Music). HiJack’s sets are full of unreleased surprises which will shanghai your senses – a perfect accomplice to a night of smooth criminals.

Rounding out this tremendous trio is Italian DJ stallion, Solo. Stefano Ritteri (a.k.a Solo) grew up in studios, rehearsal rooms and gigs since the age of 14, playing drums and guitar in bands and experimenting with turntables and FX at school concerts. He held residencies at the coolest clubs in Italy before moving his studio to London and started working behind the scenes, co-producing and mixing for Mowgli for Elite Forces’s label Used&Abused. Their version of ‘No turning back’ became a massive underground hit. After this other releases soon followed, including remixes for Xpress2 and Cornershop, as well his first EP, amusingly named ‘We are the Midgets’, a sign of his new sound (playfully referred to as ‘midget house’ = crazy samples, mad use of percussion and chopped melodies, vocals and synth lines.) Solo is now in high demand for remixes and collaborations with upcoming releases on labels including Defected, Ninja Tune, Mute, Exploited records and many more.
