Voted as ‘Best National Drum & Bass Producer and DJ’ in 2006 and ‘Best National Producer’ in 2009 at Germany’s Future Music Awards, Phace has proven early in his career what he’s capable of, both behind the boards and on the decks.

The gritty and rebellious debut album Psycho released in 2007 on the Subtitles Music Imprint was voted Album of the Month in Mixmag, and successfully garnered massive support by top international acts like Andy C, Noisia, Pendulum, Goldie, Ed Rush & Optical, Teebee & Calyx, Friction, and Spor. At the tail end of 2008, Phace joined forces with long-time friend Misanthrop and launched Neosignal, Phace’s long-awaited record label, and unleashed celebrated singles, remixes (for UK’s Hadouken!) and collaborations (with Noisia, Misanthrop and Spor) throughout 2009. Phace began work on ‘Phase II’ for Neosignal in 2010 with his heavily anticipated second full-length, From Deep Space, released to great fanfare within the international D’n’B scene. After a worldwide album tour in the first half of the year, Fall 2010 marks Phace’s return to the recorded realm on Neosignal’s next set of singles.

What: Bass Notion presents DMZ (Mala & Coki)

Where: The Bakery

When: 9 April 2011

Cost/Ticket details: $25+bf, The Bakery

In the world of dubstep few names command as much respect as the pioneering duo of Mala & Coki or DMZ (Digital Mystikz). Starting writing music together from an early age their unique blend of of dubbed out London sounds. Both derived of jungle, dub reggae and garage yet brand new has captivated audiences and inspired debate about the sound the world over.

While the two are recognized and praised predominantly for their deeper productions their DJ sets which are more akin to old school reggae sound system shows are widely regarded as some of the most varied and musically rich you can hear anywhere in the dubstep world today.

With numerous seminal releases that date all the way back to 2004 (Twisup, Anti War Dub, last years stellar Return II Space and Urban Ethics to name but afew) and a genre defining, taste making party of the same name (DMZ) there is no doubt that when these two behemoths of scene touch down in Perth for the first of the new BASS NOTION parties at the newly refurbished Bakery, it will be a night to remember.

Return to where it all began

There couldn’t have been a better way to conclude what was another stellar year in Perth for drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep music than Origin New Years Eve. Over the last twelve months we’ve had some amazing artists from each genre visit our shores and rock the shit out of our clubs and on the final eve of 2010 Origin was set to take it up yet another notch. This year saw the event scale back from the more typical festival set up of the previous two years and return to it’s home, the magical Belvoir Amphitheatre – a change welcomed by many. Break it down for the full review.

Knowledge Music, Peace Music, MTV Classic & 3D World present…

…Presenting… Grammy Award-nominated rapper, actor and poet MOS DEF in his first ever headline tour of Australia – The Ecstatic Tour. Titled in support of his current album of the same name – ‘The Ecstatic’ (his 4th studio album to date) just earned a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album & Rolling Stone magazine named it one of the best albums of 2009.

The Ecstatic Tour is the first time Mos Def has been in Australia since he was here with DJ Shadow in 2006 and this is his first and ‘only ever’ headline Australian tour!

MOS DEF’s musical career has spanned nearly two decades, starting out in a short lived group with his brother and sister. By ‘96 he was an emerging solo artist and was working with De La Soul and Da Bush Babees before releasing his own first single, ‘Universal Magnetic’ which was a huge underground hit. He then went on to join with TALIB KWELI and together they released a full length album under the name BLACK STAR. 4 solo albums and nearly ten years later, Mos has now signed on to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint for the next chapter!

West and Mos have collaborated several times, most recently on the G.O.O.D. Friday track “Lord Lord Lord”. Mos has taken on something of a spiritual adviser role for Kanye as of late – in a recent Tweet about his “Power” remix verse Kanye wrote, “Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically.” Initially recognized for his musical output, Mos Def’s screen work since the early 2000s has established him as one of only a handful of rappers who have garnered critical approval for their acting work.

Music review

Huffing and puffing

What happens when you take three of the most exciting, forward thinking and hugely popular bass music artists, put them in a dark room with a few hundred kids ready to rinse, give them a set of decks and let them throw it down on a Friday night in Perth? Knowledge Music must have a gypsy  holed up in their offices, as they seemed to predict the unfolding of this situation with extreme accuracy, and had the forethought to aptly title the event, The Blow Out. Yep, shit certainly got hectic as Headhunter, Opiou and Doctor P served up supreme sets and the capacity Shape crowd took to it like junkies to clean needles. Break it down for the full review.
