RUBY ROSE was once a door bitch, student and model and is now the face, voice and disc-spinning hands of a generation. You can see her gracing every fashion bible, trash read, tv channel and at LIMELITE on Friday April 1.

From MTV brat to darling of the red carpet Ruby Rose has surpassed IT girl fame and is making her mark behind the decks. When not planning world domination she is dropping tunes at some of Australia’s hottest clubs, parties and festivals. Even spinning tracks at renowned LA club XIV and putting it on wax for a compilation album with Grant Smillie called “Neon Essential”.

Ruby brings her partner in crime Grant Smillie along for the ride. Acclaimed producer, radio host and record label owner Smillie is one of Australia’s most in demand DJ’s and one half of chart topping and hit making TV ROCK. With 2 ARIA awards under his belt and gracing the airwaves on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection what’s not to love about Mr Smillie?

Producer of delicious big room, progressive and tech-house tracks and nominated for International Dance Music Awards for his superhuman remixing skills Michael Woods is one to watch. He kickstarted 2011 by smashing out the Ministry of Sound – Residents compilation after a summer residency for Cream at Amnesia in Ibiza and a personal invitation from Deadmau5 to join his infamous 2010 UK tour. We expect even bigger things to come and that’s why we bring him to the bighouse so you can get a taste.

Expect nothing short of a heaving party at LIMELITE on Friday, April 1. Supported by our resident Zelimir and duo Props Box. Doors open at 9.30pm.

Australia Day for most is usually celebrated with the likes of barbeques, beers and other eventful activities. This year, local promoters Limelite decided to break away from the traditional revelries that most of us are habituated with to bring us Dutch House maestro, Laidback Luke to headline their Australia Day party at Salt on the Beach. Full review after the jump…

Warm sunny weather, a good vibe and a noble reason to party were the elements behind the groundwork for this unique and exciting event.

Upon entering the venue, I wasn’t sure if I was at the right place at first as I thought I had walked straight into a muscle man convention. Seriously, the amount of masculines flouncing around the place looking as though they have all used some ‘special help’ to become the size they were was beyond me. Sometimes I wonder whether these types of people are actually there for the music, or instead to wear their new singlet/tank tops to show off their body mass. Other than that, the rest of the crowd seemed to be tolerable and were scattered across the venue.

When I arrived, Limelite resident Mel B was supplying the music, smashing out some electro bangers. I can’t say I was a big fan of what I was hearing, but that is probably due to the fact that I am not the biggest enthusiast of the electro genre as a whole but besides that, her mixing was flawless, the transitions between tracks was admirable and she had the whole dance floor grooving to her set, so it was quite obvious she was doing a good job.

Next up, it was time for Zelimir to take over. Starting off by leisurely shifting the course of the music to a more tech-house feel, I thought this was a worthy change as it seemed to match the daylight atmosphere of the venue creating a somewhat, Ibiza style ambience. Unfortunately, the crowd didn’t seem to be too appreciative of this change and the dance floor started to thin out as each minute went by. Zelimir being quick to notice was forced to drop some old classics such as Fragma – Toca Me and The Chemical Brothers – Galvanize to win back the attention of the crowd. I must say it is really disappointing to see how arrogant and narrow minded our Perth crowd can be when it comes to being exposed to genres that they may not be so familiarized with.

In addition to Zelimir, Australia’s own Zoe Badwi came on stage to accompany his set by performing a live show to a very enthusiastic crowd. Playing an assortment of her own live material with tracks such as Freefallin’ and Release Me, she had the crowd hyped up and constantly cheering in excitement.

Moving on, it was time for local superstar Mind Electric to take control, where he played a vibrant and robust set to entertain the masses. Playing numerous crowd pleasers along with a handful of his own productions, it was another smooth and professional set that we are all used to seeing.

Finally, it was time for the much anticipated headline act Laidback Luke to grace our Perth crowd with his signature sound of Dutch House. Wasting no time, Luke took off exuberantly from the vibe that Mind Electric had set. His set was filled with energy and liveliness the whole way through and by having Nebat Drums to assist him with amping up the crowd, they both produced an atmosphere that many other promoters would only dream of.

Having a DMC background with his DJing, Luke was able to incorporate a bunch of scratching into his set which wowed many punters giving them more than they could ever expect, especially when scratching over popular crowd pleasers such as the remix of Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit that he dropped. However, he was not finished yet where he even moved to the newly hyped Dubstep genre by playing the Doorly remix of Bonkers by Dizzee Rascall towards the end of his set.

All in all I thought the day as a whole was very unique as Limelite had successfully managed to integrate the live aspect of music into the electronic scene in a very fashionable way that is becoming ever so increasing. It certainly looks like they will have to put some extra planning into their next big event to top this one.
