Laidback Luke

This year, Australia Day will be distinguished in no other way, than partying on the beach with Laidback Luke.  The Dutch House music heavyweight that has been involved in producing some global anthems such as ‘Show Me Love’, ‘Leave The World Behind’, and ‘Shake It Down’ will be gracing our shores on this fine day to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian.

Music artist

Malente

Malente looks like a madman, and that’s because he is, but he knows how to get a good party started. Lucky for you he’s playing this Friday night at Limelite (event info). He’s quoted as saying “evolve or die” in relation to his changing musical styles. He’s been a great artist to periodically follow because he’s mastered the ability to update his sound and stay interesting. If you want a taste of his evolving sound then read on after the jump…

Laidback Luke said to inthemix: “I think we reached the point where house music and dance parties are way too serious. We should go back to having crazy, stupid fun with our friends.” Luckily we were listening!

The Limelite crew in conjunction with Sunset Events is throwing the ultimate soiree this summer: LAIDBACK LUKE at Salt on the Beach. The only way to celebrate Australia Day is with a heaving beach party and you’re invited!

Always smashing it out for festival fans it was time we made Laidback Luke the star of the show. Criss-crossing the globe for sell out shows and releasing bangers via his own Mixmash Records there is no stopping the Dutchman. His malleable house sound has seen him align with a range of labels, with upcoming releases on Dim Mak and Defected. Hell bent on “revolting against any musical stigma” whats not to like?

To keep things fresh we have added the pop diva Zoe Badwi to the mix. The songstress has been making serious waves this year with ARIA chart toppers “Release Me” and “Free Falling” and recently enthralling an adoring crowd at Stereosonic with her sultry voice.

To ice the cake we have rounded up a swagger of westcoast talent so expect banging tunes from your favourite local djs. Get out your thongs and dance from day to night with your LIMELITE crew. Don’t miss all the fun in the sun … minus the sand at Australia Day’s most epic event by the sea.

LIMELITE is gonna see out 2010 staying true to form by unleashing the buzz act of the year! Always loaded with goodness we will be reigniting one of our favourite nights. Remember when the dancefloor warped into a pit of swarming energetic bodies close to rioting? One night sails into mind … that time we went yacht clubbing.

The …mighty YACHT CLUB DJs roll in over the high seas and return to LIMELITE to wave in 2011. The mash-up merchants bring their mixes and melds of every-fkn-genre-imaginable back to the port of Freo for one mother of a PJ party!

Yacht Club are going to tear apart your favourite songs and smash them back together amidst a flurry of flying pyjamas, nudity, crowd invasions, dancing on the decks and general looseness. Downstairs the mainroom decks will be awash with our local land lubbers Jus Haus?, The Pearly Whites and Zelimir smashing out the tunes.

Climb the mast to level 2 where Suave will be serving up latino salsa at our sleepover. For sounds more ghetto D Tuck will be steering the ship to the land where hip hop and commercial cross over. With mashups downstairs and party favourites upstairs the bighouse will be shaking.

Go to bed with the Limelite crew for the maddest slumber party of your life waving goodbye to 2010. Don’t forget your PJs: sleep not included!

Music review

Everyone wins

The Bingo Players brought the house party to Limelite on Friday night. It was a really good night, plenty of people on the dance floor and plenty cheering and clapping for the Dutch duo. With their style of house music it’s pretty easy to see why people were having such a good time. Full review after the jump…

Cost/Ticket details: 10/15, door sales

From the bedroom, to the backyard, to mixing it alongside the big boys The Pearly Whites have hit the ground running. Its been a massive year for the duo and with an epic countdown to their set at Stereosonic we have handed over the reins. Our shiny toothed lads call the night their own and take control of the bookings, support slots and programming on October 22 for The Pearly Whites & Friends at Limelite.

It kicked off when… JS and Mo’Fly paired up with a little mixtape sent into Limelite HQ five minutes before the closing of entries. The Pearly Whites were born and they sailed through the heats to be crowned winners of the first “Into the Limelite DJ Competition”. Embracing gold saw them smashing out party mash up set at Creamfields. Since then they played alongside superstars Drop the Lime and Anoraak at Limelite and secured gigs at almost every bangin club around town. Even scoring a one hour live set guest slot on RTR FMs “trainwreck”.

Phetsta’s DJ skills have seen him tour both nationally and overseas, including two eight week long sell out tours of Europe and one in The United States. His music has found its way into the record boxes of the likes of Pendulum, Grooverider, Andy C and Annie Mac. Expect a mixture of electro, dubstep, DnB and everything in between with expert mixing over three decks

M!SPR!NT exploded onto the scene with one of his earliest gigs taking him all the way to the limelite finals. Since then he’s been in high demand playing gigs at geisha, ambar, limelite, bar open and recently scoring support for Jack Beats and Aston Shuffle at villa. This man knows how to make a dance floor move.

DNRGFLD is the front runner and main man behind break the seal. Winner of the Mullaloo beach DJ comp this home boy plays everything from funk to breaks and knows how to bring the rukkus.

Mister Ed was an intelligent palomino horse who could talk. Mr.ED however is a nu school DJ, who’s style is hard to top and makes for exciting sets. As head honcho of Beat off, and a bar open and ambar regular, you can expect a set filled with party style electro and breaks.

Witness The Pearly Whites tear the place a new one with friends in tow

dishing out an array of electro, dubstep, breaks and party with a sprinkling of madness to make you move.

Attention all wanna be superstar DJ’s……..

“Into the Limelite DJ Competition” is back with $500 Cash, a set of sparkling new Pioneer Headphones and the major prize being a set at Stereosonic.

That’s right, mix it with the best of Perth’s up and coming dj talent and you could be sharing a stage with some of the biggest names in dance music. If you need proof of how this can kick start your career check out what’s happened to The Pearly Whites since taking out our first comp.

Competition rules are simple.

1. You need to be a novice, i.e. an emerging talent, not established on the scene, not a regular club night dj or hold a residency at a club or pub. You must not have played out more than a hand full of times – back yard parties for your mates are fine but we don’t want any kill joys showing up and causing us grief.

2.
Competitors from last year are fine to re enter but need to fit into rule 1

3. Limelite plays big room house, electro, rumbling tribal tech and some classic tracks that the haters call cheese. We aren’t looking for pure DnB, Dubstep, Trance or Breaks djs but a splattering of some or any of those genres are fine and encouraged

4. Set times are 20 minutes.

5. Mixes need to be sent in by Friday October 15 with finalists announced on Monday 25th October for the first of three heats starting on
Friday November 5th with the final taking place on Friday 26th November. Mixes need to be between 20 – 30 minute.

6. Competitors will be judged by media ( both electronic and print ) current LIMELITE djs and some industry icons

7. Competitors will be judged out of a maximum possible 50 points. The breakdown of scoring is as follows

• 10 points. Mixing. This is a must, mix with confidence and nail it every time.

• 10 points. Track selection. That’s your style so we won’t bug you. Points won’t be deducted for repeats of tracks, keep in mind nobody wants to hear the same track 5 times in a night. Plan to have a back up or two.

• 10 points. Technical ability. Get your levels right, smash out some bangers while you are looping samples and dropping vocals.

• 10 points. Crowd interaction / Stage Presence. It’s your time to show off, so bring out your inner coolness.

• 10 points. Crowd response. This is where you are really judged, the punters are the fans.

8. The competition is open to single or double acts.

9. You must notify us of what equipment you need when you enter the competition.

All entries must be include a brief bio, cheeky mug shot and your mix. Please forward to Mel B – mel@limelite.com.au.

Judges decision is the bomb, don’t make us hate you……..

Bingo Players @ Limelite

What: Bingo Players

Where: Metros (Freo)

When: 29 October 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 20 doorsales

LIMELITE is all about bringing bangin’ tunes and ensuring Friday night mayhem. After witnessing the Dutch duo BINGO PLAYERS smash it out at Creamfields it was pure lust. They are leaving the local bingo hall to highroll it at the bighouse on October 29.

Bingo Players, Paul Bäumer and Maarten Hoogstraten, have been left gasping for air after a seriously hectic year with bookings all over. A mix of hard work, devotion, a knack for producing massive hits and frenzies on the dfloor sees the boys from the Netherlands absolutely killing it!

The Bingo Players are a match made in heaven, their remake of the dance floor classic “Devotion”, being the proof in the pudding. This track stayed at no. 1 for two weeks and over a month in the top 10! The skyrocketing success of recent track “Tom’s Diner” saw Onelove compilation Sound Machine 14 fly off the shelves.

And if that wasn’t tantalisingly tasty, we are adding special guest Gramophonedzie into the mix. Gramophonedzie’s dancefloor bomb ‘Why Don’t You’ was one of the biggest club records and received widespread club support from the likes of Erick Morillo and Steve Angello. This hit has racked up over 1,000,000 views on YouTube and enjoyed widespread airplay across both TV and radio. Now the rising star is bringing his passion for funk and live instrumental sounds to Fremantle.

It’s a recipe for another heaving night at Limelite. So get down early and hold onto your cards, its bingo time!
