The future is plastik

The Perthquake crew ventured out to Future Music Festival two weekends ago, and I think on the whole we all had enjoyable days. We had some small troubles getting in, but I don’t think that effected most people, but it did but a bit of a dampener on the beginning of our day. However once into Arena, I saw plenty of stuff I didn’t think I’d enjoy and was pleasantly surprised. By far the stand out act was Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman show – I’ll let Cam fill you in on the details, both of our reviews are after the jump…

These are the days of our summer

I learned something pretty special on the weekend. A wise man I saw at Summadyze pointed out that festivals aren’t just about the music, they’re about the festival experience. The melting pot of people looking to have a good time, where mates can hang out, people dress up foolishly and there’s music involved for people to enjoy. With that in mind I opened up my eyes and saw everyone having a really good time, which is pretty characteristic of our Perth summers. That isn’t to say the festival was flawless, there were a few things that needed fixing, but all-in-all I had a pretty good day, and for me Summadayze had the best line-up of the 2010/11 festival season, plenty of disco-house to make you get down. Check out the full review after the jump….

Buy now pay later tickets

This is a great idea, kinda like paying for a car, make your deposit and pay it off bit by bit, but now it’s for festival tickets! The idea came through the ‘festival-flooding’ of the summer season. Unless you’re working full time and have plenty of cash the summer is a time filled with difficult decisions, which festivals and events do you go to? Especially when you’re spending all your money on dinners and flowers for your significant other, and whatever the hell people actually spend their money on. You rarely have any left to spend on events but when the money comes out little by little it makes a world of difference. Mellen events and Ticketmaster have teamed up to get this going and I’m sure it will be something that catches on pretty quickly. If you want try it out go to ticketmaster.

My Past Future..

FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL…. !!!

The hype surrounding this festival was massive ! I think it went down for me as the best all-round festival line up easily in the last 3-4 years and many others would definitely agree with me on this. What I liked about it best is that everyone had their own story to make out of it.

The “trance-heads” would have been planted to the melodies of Above & Beyond, Jaytech & Matt Zo @ the ANJUNABEATS stage while some were going hard with the sounds of Dubfire & Sven Vath in THE LIKES OF YOU tent and many others were probably floating around the place. In the end Mellen Events did great to cater for all types of music lovers !

On the day itself, i thought the weather did many of us a great favour, as some of us were trying to prepare for the initial forecast of 41 degrees! Don’t get me wrong, everyone sweated their asses off.

The first on my list was Dubfire, I got stuck in the line so I didn’t get to watch his opening but DID HE PLAY A SET ! Peeps who

What: Massive Attack

Where: Kings Park

When: 12 March 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 100-110+bf, ticketmaster

Massive Attack, the UK’s ‘trip-hop’ pioneers, bring their haunting and hypnotic fusion of hazy beats, dub, hauntingly soulful melodies and choice samples to Australia this March. Founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grant Marshall (Daddy G) will be joined on tour by vocalists Horace Andy, Deborah Miller, Martina Topley-Bird, and band members Damon Reece (drums), Angelo Bruschini (guitar), John Baggott (keyboards), Winston Blissett (bass) and Julien Brown (drums).

On February 5, Massive Attack will release their 5th studio album, their first since 2003’s 100th Window. Heligoland (EMI) features guests Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio, Elbow’s Guy Garvey, Portishead’s Adrian Utley and long time associate, ragga-reggae veteran Horace Andy. For the first time in this region, all patrons purchasing tickets for Massive Attack’s Australian and New Zealand dates will have the option of including a copy of their much anticipated new album Heligoland at no extra cost. Ticket buyers will have a choice between receiving a digital download of the album with bonus tracks, or a physical Tour Edition that will feature an exclusive cover.

Tickets for Massive Attack’s tour dates will be on pre-sale for a two week period commencing Friday January 22 and those who purchase tickets before Thursday February 4 will be the first in the world to receive Heligoland. Head to www.massiveattack.com.au to access this exclusive offer.

Massive Attack formed out of Bristol’s legendary DJ collective The Wild Bunch in 1988, releasing their debut single Daydreaming two years later, with Shara Nelson and Tricky on vocals. The soaring Unfinished Sympathy with its iconic one-take video followed, as did Safe From Harm, again featuring Nelson, all lifted from their enduring classic and critically acclaimed debut album, Blue Lines. The chilled out Protection followed in ‘94, with singles Karmacoma, Sly and the title track featuring Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn, the album winning Massive Attack the Brit Award for Best Dance Act. The group’s darker third album Mezzanine, featuring Teardrop – vocals by Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) – and Inertia Creeps, won the Q Award for Best Album and a nomination for Mercury Music Prize.

In 2008 Massive Attack were awarded the Q Award for Innovation and last year were honoured with the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Supporting Massive Attack on tour, as well as appearing on stage with them, is Martina Topley-Bird. Martina came to the fore providing the feminine touch on Tricky’s landmark album Maxinquaye, plus three follow-up albums, her eerie soft vocals contrasting with Tricky’s menacing mutterings. In 2003 Martina released her Mercury Music Prize nominated, solo debut album Quixotic, with guest appearances from David Holmes, Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan, Mojo describing it “a sensual and endlessly inventive record.” The Blue God is Martina’s latest album release. She also features on lead vocals on two new Massive Attack tracks, Babel and Psyche.
