This week Perthquake recommends…

If you don’t want to get thrown out of Perth venues like Hot Chip did, then I’d advise you to head to any of these events…

King Tito’s feat. Tabularaza (Fri 30 July)

With half of Perthquake getting down to this, why wouldn’t you attend? Not to mention the main act, Tabularaza played the original Maybe Dancing Will Help, and I know for a fact they won’t disappoint. With all the regular King Tito’s djs in tow you know it’s going to be a night of great tunes and dancing.

Aston Shuffle @ Limelite (Fri 30 July)

If ya like electro then you’d bloody well better like Aston Shuffle. These guys were one of my first electro loves with Everyone and then Stomp Yo Shoes. They might be from Canberra but it’s nothing to hold against them when you hear one of their sets. Support comes from Jus Haus? and Zel.

Evidence @ The Velvet Lounge (Sat 31 July)

Nightclass, Deadweight and Perthquake presents a night of a night of dubstep and bass pressure. Promising to save you money for your washing powder, it’s free, this will be a solid rinse out (I think that’s the term) of local dubstep talent. Featuring dj sets from VISHNU, ST-1, SAXON & TIFA, PICKLES, and D.Y.P.

This week Perthquake recommends…

James Holden @ Ambar (Fri 23/7)

Keen for some techno? Democracy events are the principle place hear techno and their reputation is always upheld. Head down to Ambar for the progressive sounds of James Holden. Support comes from Declan, Aarin F, James Francis and Progress Inn.

Jack In The Box feat. Shockone @ The Republic (Sat 24/7)

A new night begins at The Republic. Amnesia and NVS have teamed up to bring a night  of late 80s, through to underground anthems, iconic hits and some of the freshest beats of New House on offer today. They’ve invited Shockone and Defeat down to help them out, so there’s going to be a large amount of local talented concentrated in one place! Definitely worth it.

Major Break 7 @ Villa (Sat 24/7)

What do I say here?! It’s pretty self-explanatory that this is going to be a busy and great event. NAPT, Black Noise and Peo De Pitte are masters of breaks, but none of them are limited to breaks. Just go to their soundclouds and you’ll see they’re artists with no lack of talent! I highly advise attending Major Break.

Jeff Doubleu @ Geisha (Fri 16/7)

Another big Destination? night featuring tech-house new-sensation Jeff Doubleu. He’s released on Potty Mouth and Jack Union, and has teamed up with Tom EQ as The Potato Heads, a duo causing quite the stir in electronic music circles. Support from Signal Drivers, James Francis, Grantley Hyde, A-Jam & Rikache.

Trashbags Launch Party feat. Gtronic & Haezer @ Villa (Sat 17/7)

I’d be betting this is the biggest club night in Perth this year. The institution that is Trashbags is coming to Perth, and it is going to feature mind (and ear) bending electro. Support from Jus Haus?, Defeat, Time Travel Agent.

Logistics @ Shape (Wed 21/7)

Next Wedneday night Knowledge is bringing in another big name in drum and bass – Logistics. I’m sure shape will be packed and it’ll be a great way to end hump day. Support from Sardi, Muller and Deflo.

Drop The Lime @ Limelite (9/7)

Well I’ve been looking forward to this event for a very long time to say the least. You can check my interview with DTL here, and get as excited as I am for what will be a smashing set of the best bass heavy electro there is. Of course DTL will have his mic and effects on hand to give us more than just a two hour dj set!

Harvard Bass @ Ambar (9/7)

Another bass heavy junkie Harvard Bass will be throwing down dance floor bangers for you to pick up and make work for you. The guy has an impressive track record with Zombie Nation, The Aston Shuffle, Toxic Avenger, Beni and The Count and Sinden looking to add Harvard Bass to their tracks. I’d expect to hear a range of genres sprinkled with the extra heavy sounds you need to forget the working week.

The Likes of You feat. Stephan Bodzin and Hugo @ Villa (10/7)

The first installment of The Likes of You left a yearning in the hearts of all of Perth’s techno lovers. Democracy have decided that can help fill that desire for big name tech acts to grace our shores and lift the roof of Villa. If tickets are still available you can get them here, but I’d be surprised if you’re lucky enough to snap any up for an event Perth is beginning to wait for.

Unstoppable Glue @ Manhattans (10/7)

It’s gonna be one big posse of Perthquake writers descending on Manhattans this Saturday night. Regular and disco detonator FKN MIDAS will be your host, with The Other Will and Zombies joining the party. Get stuck in unstoppable dance mayhem (if you watch us dance it looks like mayhem).

Bad Love @ Defectors (10/7)

Locals Petrosex, Craig Hollywood, P.C.J. & Son of the Father and Mick Zing, spinning the finest in disco, funk, hip hop, indie and anything that will warm the love in your heart on a winters night.

Maybe Dancing Will Help feat. Tabularaza @ Norfolk Basement

What: Maybe Dancing Will Help feat. Tabularaza

Where: Norfolk Basement

When: 18 June 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 5, door sales

Perthquake, Scenic and Warm Kitten proudly present the first ever MAYBE DANCING WILL HELP!
We are being told that the Perth club scene is dying if not already in the ground. This may or may not be true, but that’s okay, because Fremantle is the new (and wildly more fun), Perth. With that in mind WA’s premier electronic music blog PERTHQUAKE has rallied up a few talented performers for a night of debauched disco, nefarious nu-disco and… fuck I’m sorry I’m totally rambing… we just wanna have a fun night with some good tunes. And providing those good tunes will be:
TABULARAZA, with their first ever completely LIVE show (none of this playing off Ableton). This up-and-coming duo craft the kind of dreamy, fun, grooving synth-disco jams that will literally prevent you from doing anything other than dance. To get an idea of what you’re instore for, visit their myspace

Tabularaza (Myspace)
And supporting these lads will be good friends and disco fiends in their own right, HOLY THURSDAY, HIPPO CAMP and of course your hosts, the PERTHQUAKE DJs.
We’re all getting pretty tired of a club scene that appears to be imploding on itself, and Fremantle is there for the taking. Full of eager kids who just wanna party, we need to unite to form what will be a fucking awesome Friday night.
From 8pm til 12am at the Norfolk Basement, the party jams kick-on at King Tito’s Dirty Disco at the East End Bar.
It’s early days yet, so keep your eyes peeled for a spanking new flyer and *fingers crossed* possibly even some transport from the big, dead smoke for those too scared to tackle the 15 minute trip southward.
There’s a burgeoning scene of damn cool producers rising up and making dancing fun again, and we look forward to showcasing it for you come June 18!

Music review

The new beginning

Well it came and passed with a little less of a bang than I expected, but that was only on the crowd front. Last Friday night at The Republic was the second Disco DaDa that Perthquake has presented. We were lucky enough to have the first dj set ever from Tabularaza (they’re working on a live set and you can read about their exploits here). Although they did ’steal’ all the cool tracks I wanted to play, but considering three of them were their own tracks I thought I’d better keep it friendly. haha. They were preceeded by Curtiss Redell and Leighton Head, who played some awesome funk and old disco including a favourite Pinapples “Come On Over.” Once they rounded out their Tabularaza slammed down an awesome loop of “perthquake,” ah yes it made me smile! The rest of their set was catchy and very danceable with the small crowd occuping the dancefloor the entire night. They dropped at least two of their own tracks, I think they played “Prime Prime Prime,” and “Reminisce” but my memory doesn’t serve me too well today!  It was really cool to see people enjoying ‘nu-disco’ and Tabularaza seemed to be enjoying it too. Can’t wait to see them play again!

Music interview

Z-Trip

A few weeks ago (around New Years, hence the somewhat-dated beginning), I had the chance to catch up with a legend amongst turntablists and DJs alike – Z-Trip. It’s a sad fact that I’ve never actually seen a Z-Trip set, but I will most definitely be catching him at Good Vibrations (site here) in a couple of weeks. He was really cool to talk to and made some valid points for all the people out there hating on DJ Hero as a cheap exercise that’s gonna produce a lot of crappy wannabe DJs. It’s pretty long so kudos to you if you stick with it! As always whole interview after the jump.

Happy New Years dude what did New Years 09/10 entail for Z-Trip?

I think for any DJ New Years is kinda like the Olympics. You train for the gig, it’s usually the highest paying gig of the year so for me I was in Vegas and I have a residency so I was there doing my thing. The cool thing was the next day I got to get down DJ Jazzy Jeff we did a little two by four at my residency on Friday so it was really, really good – the best way to start off a new year.

Pickles

Pickles is a DJ hailing from North Perth and is basically the reason I got into DJing and dance music myself way back when (see – four years ago). He likes pretty much every genre of dance music floating around and so it’s with great pleasure I post not one, but TWO, cracking mixes the lad has whipped up in recent weeks. The first is a banging selection of electro/tech numbers that will have you doing some kind of crazy mosh/dance hybrid in your mind while the other, his bread and butter, is a crushing 60 minutes of dubstep madness. That’s right, dubstep. I know PQ isn’t exactly dubstep headquarters, but to be honest nowhere really is in the Perth blogosphere, and I’d like to believe we are all open-minded individuals willing to try/listen to something new. You’d be doing yourself a favour in this regard because it’s an awesome mix, and who doesn’t like pulling the hoody over the head and bouncing to some dubstep every now and then? Full track lists on the flip side… BOH!

W.I.L.L. Mixtape

Finally I’ve been able to use Perthquake for what I’ve always wanted… shameless self promotion! I did this mix on tuesday night, inspired by a show I saw on Sunday night (??), Dance Your Ass Off. It’s all done live on CDJs none of this computer stuff for me (probably because I can’t get it right on the computer). It’s only 26 minutes so won’t take up an hour of your time to listen too, Here’s the tracklist and the link at the bottom…
