Music review

They’ve arrived

It comes as no surprise that the Destination? 6th birthday at the villa proved to be quite a party!! While the crowd numbers had nothing on the Stanton Warriors gig there the week prior, this just set the stage for an intimate party vibe and was in no way a disappointment. People were spread all among the Villa maze making it look quite sparse initially.. More people started to filter in as Pete from Signal Drivers effortlessly blended tough tech house and got everyone ready for what was to come. Next up was the infamous Baby Gee from Qld filling the place with his big room house sound. The decision was then made to close the upstairs portion of the venue and this was timed perfectly, bringing all the crew together prior to the main act going on.
Rico tubbs went on and created mayhem on the dancefloor as the punters lapped up every minute of his trademark fusion of big basslines, rave synths, 4/4 and broken beats. While it was still by no means a packed house, the vibe was electric and everyone had room to get their dance on and it became clear that it was actually a great decision to have the event there and not at Ambar which has been home to the Destination? parties of days gone by. A-Jam from Melbourne and one of Perth’s favourite locals, Philly Blunt took over from the Finish maestro and went back to back to close the night out for the remaining groovers in fine style.. Another top night by the Destination? crew, showing exactly why and how they have been able to keep their nights going for all this time.

Music interview

Rico Tubbs

Next Friday night is Destination?’s 6th birthday party (info here) and Rico Tubbs is coming to make the dancefloor bounce with his infectious beats. Another one of Finland’s fine artists alongside my favourites Sharkslayer and Top Billin.’ I asked about Finland’s music scene, his last tour and my question of the moment on downloading music illegally. When I asked about whether he was going to work on an album Rico said that ‘albums are pretty much an obsolete format’ which I think I’d have to agree with because they just don’t seem to be done that often in electronic music. Go read the full interview after the jump…

This is the coolest flyer I’ve seen in ages, but the flyer doesn’t make the night, the Dj does, and this Dj is MASSIVE, massive bass! And Destination? have been a perth label for 6 years, wow that’s a long time!

Happy Birthday Destination?. The club night that started it all is turning 6 and celebrating in style with a HUGE double header at the hottest new venue in town, Villa. Always at the cutting edge of music, the club night has played host to many of the movers and shakers in underground dance ensuring perth club goers experience the latest in beats from around Australia and the globe. The club night has gone on to spawn one of the finest dance music labels ensuring that new music is never too far away.

Rico Tubbs – After absolutely rocking it at Good Vibrations, Rico Tubbs is back to help make Destination?’s birthday a night to remember. The master of bass heavy party beats has been a rising star of the dance music circuit with his releases Cheap Thrills, Top Billin and Menu Music all being sureplayers in many a DJ’s arsenal. Rico’s unique blend of fidget, house and breaks has taken dancefloors by storm from Moscow to LA and now for the first time at our birthday!

Baby Gee – When Destination? needed a big room specialist to fill Villa with sound, they decided to call on the one and only Baby Gee. (Trouble Makers/Chinese Laundry, Sydney) 2009 has been a massive year for BG with weekly residencies at Family and Monastery.
