Blasting through the heat

Perthquake packed their sunscreen, water bottles and hats and headed to the Claremont Showgrounds last Sunday for Stereosonic. We knew it was going to be ‘packing heat’ from the lineup, what we didn’t know was it was going to be literally smoking hot. It’s fair enough to say most people would have been wishing for the sun to set quicker. The organisers were well prepared for this weather by having staff armed with festival guides and sunscreen located just past the entrance. The first thing that stood out as we went in was the carefully planned spacious layout of the venue. Then going near the stages we noticed the sound had been well planned too, with little interference between stages. It certainly was much more noticeable this time round than in the past, which shows that a lot of thought went into the planning process of this day. Read on for Cam’s and Faris’ take on different acts throughout the day…

Russ Chimes Expressway Mix pt. 2

So I overheard the guy that runs this blog complaining about how some of us don’t contribute enough, right to my face. So suck on this you wannabe dictator!

Stereosonic (tickets here) is this Sunday! We’ve had a little break since Parklife but now summer is here and shit is about to get real and not let up until… well Parklife next year. It’s a fairly techno-centric festival. Which is great if you like techno. And if you like to dance. ‘Cause lets be honest you can dance to techno for hours given the right circumstances. But there’s some other stuff there too and one of them is a PQ fave, Russ Chimes. Here’s a mix he made recently which will give you a pretty good indication if you wanna catch his set on Sunday. If you do, Dirty Harry will see you there! And also at Major Lazer, and who knows where the hell else in between; there’s a lot of good shit on offer.

Stereosonic 2010

The second festival of the season has opened for business. Stereosonic has had an amazing history, only in its fourth year and it has expanded its venue in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Although Perth misses out on a venue change the sheer number of people expected to attend makes Claremont Showgrounds the only logical choice. With acts like Tiesto, Carl Cox, Major Lazer, Sebastian Ingrosso and Calvin Harris there is guaranteed to be a storm of eager punters wanting tickets. And those acts aren’t the half of it, especially since I don’t know the big techno acts etc… Stereosonic will go on with a bang. Full line-up after the jump…

Sonic boom

Yesterday began with a small pre-stereosonic drinks session at the new Perthquake house (Troy, I didn’t tell you about this but I think for convenience your house should be rented out to the members of Perthquake instead of being your house. Hope that’s okay?) When we turned up we walked straight passed a girl on a stretcher (it was 2.30pm) and Shazam claimed that his amazing dj set had sent her into a trance like state, now I feel like quite the fool for missing it! After a few minutes of knightlife dealing with a small crowd Dragonette hit the stage, for 20 minutes! That was pretty disappointing, but they played Take It Like A Man, and they threw some Justice into one of their tracks, so although it was super short, it was still good.

I didn’t go watch Hudson Mohawke, so yes I didn’t get my cool on (here’s a good point to say I probably should have gone to see them because I think I heard dubstep nearly all day and a break would have been nice!), instead I wondered toward Renaissance Man, and caught the end of Ajax, who does do very good blog house dj sets. Including crowd favourite Parlez-vous Francais? and managing to put in every djs favourite track, Positif. Ajax ended with, or Renaissance Man started with one of the most heavy dubstep tracks I’ve heard. I did leave to get food, and with the way the sound was set up I can’t be certain I heard this but… I’m sure the Sharkslayer remix of  Pobum Coco was played. This is my favourite wobbly bouncy track. Music interview

Drop The Lime (Stereosonic)

Trouble & Bass front man Drop The Lime took the time to answer some of my questions! Yay! I got to find out about Trouble & Bass itself and as always what Drop The Lime thinks of illegal downloads. I love asking the illegal download and dj equipment questions, if you’ve read most of the interviews there have been some semi-consistent views, but often the reasons are very different. (Oh and he was in a choir with Alicia Keys! WTF how awesome/crazy is that). Anyway get your Drop The Lime on and read the full interview after the jump…

Why the two projects Curses and Drop The Lime?

Drop The Lime is my main focus, while Curses! Is an alter-ego for the spookier house like take on club music.

Alter Ego (Stereosonic)

Roman has been in the electronic music scene since the late 80s and forming Alter Ego in 1991 with Joern, he’s been to and played at the infamous 24 hour parties, which began in Frankfurt and have spread all through Germany (so they didn’t start in Berlin, where they are now well known). Anyway there were usual mishaps but everything is explained after the jump. I’ve also got Rocker streaming, I think it’s the Alter Ego track you might know!

Alter Ego (Myspace)

As always I do something wrong and we end up with some kind of general mishap at the start of an interview…

I didn’t go last year (the video looks like Don Diablo got a really good reception though), but this year the lineup is too impressive to miss, they’ve got some nice heavy stuff in there with Drop The Lime, Surkin, Zombie Nation and The Bloody Beetroots, some cool indie stuff with Bag Raiders, Knightlife, Canyons, Tim Sweeney and Grafton Primary, and a few house acts and most important Deadmau5, I love his song Funkenstein, it’s so corny…
