Byyyeeeeee

Just a quick thanks to Petro, Jaymes and Jack for a year of cool music at Sexy. Saturday night saw a good show of people supporting a wonderful and unique night in Perth which is now sadly over. I think Perth is making some positive steps towards more varied and interesting nights, and sexy was definitely an original player in this game and I hope no one forgets that. Even though the genres of music played may not have suited everyone, it offered choice, and that is what is important, some options for your Saturday. Who wants to whittle their life away at the same bar every weekend listening to the same music? Not me! Thanks Sexy.

Music review

The new beginning

Well it came and passed with a little less of a bang than I expected, but that was only on the crowd front. Last Friday night at The Republic was the second Disco DaDa that Perthquake has presented. We were lucky enough to have the first dj set ever from Tabularaza (they’re working on a live set and you can read about their exploits here). Although they did ’steal’ all the cool tracks I wanted to play, but considering three of them were their own tracks I thought I’d better keep it friendly. haha. They were preceeded by Curtiss Redell and Leighton Head, who played some awesome funk and old disco including a favourite Pinapples “Come On Over.” Once they rounded out their Tabularaza slammed down an awesome loop of “perthquake,” ah yes it made me smile! The rest of their set was catchy and very danceable with the small crowd occuping the dancefloor the entire night. They dropped at least two of their own tracks, I think they played “Prime Prime Prime,” and “Reminisce” but my memory doesn’t serve me too well today!  It was really cool to see people enjoying ‘nu-disco’ and Tabularaza seemed to be enjoying it too. Can’t wait to see them play again!

Horror Shop @ The Republic

What: Horror Shop feat. Mile End & Like Junk

Where: The Republic

When: 12 February 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 5

Count down to another brilliant HORROR SHOP at THE REPUBLIC is almost over as this Friday sneaks upon us, the Republic will once again host one of Perth’s most infamous underground live indi music nights.

Headlining this Friday is one of Perth’s most well renowned underground bands…MILE END!

Mile End are a Perth based four piece band. Their music has been described as having a dense, textured sound; gritty and beautiful all at once. They write slow-burn odysseys using distorted reverb drenched guitars, wailing, melodic vocals that soar over a pulsating rhythm section that build into violent crescendos.

Over the years the band has received praise from local media for their intense live shows, building their reputation as “underground favourites”, leading to support slots with national acts such as Brian Henry Hooper, Witch Hats, Bat Rider, This Is Your Captain Speaking, Black Level Embassy and Inappropriate Tough Guy Behaviour.

In 2007, They recorded a 4 track demo which was picked up by radio stations RTR FM and TRIPLE J and in December they embarked on their first tour of Melbourne..

2008 marked the release of “RUMBLEFISH”. The four track EP received much praise, being described by reviewers as a “music-noir classic” and “a dreamy shoegazing piece of near perfection…. resulting in one of the best local EPs this town has seen so far this year.” RTR FM continued to support the band by playing tracks on the radio, picking the CD as a feature album and inviting the band to play their annual In The Pines festival at the Somerville auditorium.

“Mile End has mastered a king of pretty noise-rock that might make scraping your knees or loosing a tooth seem romantic – it’s gritty and beautiful all at once”

Drum Media

Mile End will be supported by Like Junk, who have been turning heads with their unique songwriting and playing style. Mile End are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut LP due out in May 2010.

DJ Cluedo Pierres will be playing a mish mash of post punk, new wave, cold wave, new york noise and art rock till the wee hours of the morning.

See you at the house of trash, horror and all things terrifyingly good this Friday.

SEXY TURNS ONE!
We’re been doing this for a year now. Can you believe it?
One year ago we decided we were bored and frustrated by Perth having no regular alternative, underground, chav-free places to dance. All our favourite old haunts were overrun with fist-fighting dickheads and 18-year-old peroxide skanks. There was truly NOWHERE left.
So we started our own night.
Somewhere where the DJs play what they want, not off an indie playlist given to them by the venue. Somewhere where the music, the people and the atmosphere came together to create something truly unique. Somewhere where the drinks were cheap ($5 Exports!), the entry was cheap (still $5!) and the people were even cheaper.
Our motto this time last year was “taking back Saturday night”.
Now Saturday night is ours once more, let’s celebrate!

Isolation @ The Republic

What: Isolation

Where: The Republic

When: 5 February 2010

Cost/Ticket details: 5, Door sales

You will recognise us by the dark blue lights. Every little thing we can do to move away from the hyped-up blood red war machine of small town resignation!
What we do together with YOU (because you make this happen remember!) is bring a new day that shines blue and uncertain like the first rays of a new rising sun!

Breaking the morning of our future, ISOLATION is not a club night, it’s a SECESSION!

It seems like much too long (and I guess it probably is) since we filled the strip-club-come-late-nite-alternative-hideaway with our signature mix of post-punk, everything-wave, atmospop, electro, minimal and dare we say it? dare we play it? goth!!

The Republic presents us with the chance to throw an unabashedly loose party, and that we shall!

PLUS this time we have a new very special guest AARON MAIN to push the limits of the already tired speakers with a selection of tracks as diverse as early punk and death rock and 90’s electronic and modern electro! Aaron’s set should prove to be a little snarlier and a little colder for you. PLUS an HDD full of stuff from KOE and myself TRAVIS DOOM that will make its ISOLATION debut!

It’s you and your friends that make us want to do this, through all the difficulty, just to see you sway through the crowd to an empty space! Show us that you mean what you say!

…and if you love what we do tell your friends to come and say hello because we may not be friends with them yet!
