Dead Prez

The name “Dead Prez” relates to the term Dead Presidents, besides hearing that slang from Hova or Nas, it literally means money. You may be thinking this is typical of every rapper to have some sort of monetary reference but in truth it is the opposite. Dead Prez are not about the materials in this world nor all the beautiful specimens. They speak about the truth that surrounds them in the American society.

They speak about socio political issues that makes you take a step and see things for what they really are. They are not interested in making money or the limelight. 15 years have elapsed since their beginnings and they still are doing the same thing they also do, in fact in all that time they have only released 2 albums and 2 underground releases. I think Black Eyed Peas could have done that in 18 months (HAHA).They are part of a prestige group of politically minded rappers such as Mos Def, KRS-ONE & even Common back in the day.

This is why to the much surprise of many Hip-hoppers that after all this time, they are finally reaching our shores ! This Saturday Villa Nightclub will be honoured to accomodate true artists not only in Hip-hop but in any form. Tickets are available for $40 from the boys from Highs & Lows, Heatseeker or Moshtix. We have waited 15 years for this Perth, so it’s something not to be missed.

Don’t Stop Dancing Girls…..

With the anticipation and hype just brewing along for a couple of weeks now, it was to no surprise that Kaskade @ Villa was a ‘sold out’ event. In this circumstance, the artist just really had the appeal to the mass audience (mainly females !). Prior to the event, the social mediums were buzzing with “Kaskade fever” as everyone was counting down the hours or even still trying to find last minute ticket steals. Let’s just say there were many who unfortunately missed out on a great night. Full review after the jump….

Kaskade

For most that don’t know, one of the bigger names in Vocal House will be amongst us. Kaskade will be performing at Villa this Saturday ( Event Info ), with much hype and anticipation that is just circulating around. I managed the chance to have a brief chat with him about whats good and going on in his life.

Villa Loco

Last Friday night, Villa was transformed into an ostentatious and energetic playground for the return of the infamous Circo Loco brand to bring us a little taste, fresh from their DC-10 home in Ibiza. With Jamie Jones and Davide Squillace to headline the event, punters were sure to be set for a night of hedonistic partying and quality dance music.

Bass Kleph Tech Review

I arrived at Villa around 12:30am on Sunday morning and was hoping to walk into a loaded room of pounding funky tech house vibes. The music was true to my anticipation but…

Miles Dyson

Miles Dyson is one of those rare talents that comes along and shows the world exactly how it is done. He’s playing Villa this Saturday night (event info here, tickets here). Starting from a very early age, he was always destined for massive things. Securing his first club residency at the age of 15, performing to a 400,000 strong crowd in the famous Zurich St parade at the age of 16, it was clear very early in the piece that he had a passion for music and was on a mission to do big things with it. In 1999 he went on to win the European DJ Championships and from then on it has been a steep climb to the upper echalons of dance music success and superstardom.

The Blast

His name is Talib Kweli, unknown to some of the mainstream but loved by many. This really showed on Thursday night as Talib Kweli performed at Villa Nightclub returning with another Australian tour. As a big fan of the artist myself, I was really looking forward to the night as it’s pretty rare for Perth to experience a real rap performer like Talib.

The Likes Of Who?

It was the long coming anticipated wait for the east coast brand – The Likes Of You – to finally come to Perth and grace one of our lucky clubs. With such a big scale event stampeding its way to the west, hosting not one, not two, but three high calibre international techno DJ’s – one would only presume that it would be hosted by no other than Perth’s very own infamous event venue, Villa. Boomtick pres Talib Kweli LIVE feat. Jean Grae
Doors open at 9pm

Straight out of Brooklyn, New York – Talib Kweli is the flame-bearer for real hip-hop. He brings his full band and New York hip hop femme fatale, Jean Grae, to Villa on Thursday 15 April.

No pants on the ground, gold grills, hats turned sideways, bitches or bling here. Just pure talent.

Talib Kweli made us sit up in the 90’s as one half of Black Star (along with Mos Def). They delivered the classic hip hop album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star, and formed part of the Native Tongues Posse, along with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. His debut album, Quality, in 2002 delivered the massive hit ‘Get By’, which was produced by Kanye West.

Truly the coolest of his kind, Talib Kweli is regarded as the best hip hop has to offer – even receiving nods within lyrics of songs by Kanye and Jay-Z. He’s appeared on many TV shows (including The Dave Chappelle Show) and featured in Dave Chappelle’s feature-length documentary, Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.

Jean Grae (a.k.a Major Woody, Da Easter Bunny, What? What?) has worked with groups including Ground Zero and Natural Resource (with whom she released Negro League Baseball on their own label Makin’ Records. She also appeared on singles by fellow Makin’ Records artists Pumpkinhead and Bad Seed, and on the O.B.S. (Original Blunted Soldiers) and produced much of the material released on the label under the pseudonym Run Run Shaw. As a solo artist, she has released Attack of the Attacking Things and followed it with This Week. Throughout her career, she has recorded tracks with Atmosphere, The Roots, Talib Kweli, The Herbaliser, Mos Def amongst many others.
Two of Hip Hop’s finest artists together for one night at Villa!

Music interview

Phil Kieran

The Likes Of You is growing up, and like a teenager in the throes of puberty, it is largely misunderstood, frustrated at the world and trying to be seen and heard. At the tender age of 3 years, The Likes Of You is packing its rucksack and venturing into the vast unknown. Is Australia ready to be shifted from its comfortable bed of commercialism and electro?

Greetings from Australia! How are you?

I’m good, I’m just about to get started in my studio today, I have it all rewired and set up really well, so excited on getting to work on new material
