It doesn’t get much more US House than a DJ born in Chicago. Yes, Kaskade is the pure definition of US House.

KASKADEKaskade moved to Utah to attend uni and became a dormroom DJ while buying and operating his own record store, Mechanized Records. As you do. In May 2000, Kaskade moved to San Francisco and began working as an A&R assistant for Om Records. Om never hesitated with Kaskade; within a year he had his first single out on the label, ‘What I Say’.

In the Moment saw Kaskade’s first top 10 single with ‘Steppin’ Out’ reaching #5 on Billboard Magazine’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. The fourth single to be released from the album, ‘Everything’, reached #1 on Billboard Magazine’s Hot Dance Club Play.

Kaskade’s fourth solo album Love Mysterious was released in September 2006, spouting singles ‘Be Still’, ‘Stars Align’ and ‘Sorry’ – the remix for which was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 for Best Remixed Recording.

Kaskade now releases under Ultra Records – most recently working with Canadian house/electronic DJ/artist Deadmau5 to produce tracks on Strobelite Seduction, including the first single (released as an EP) ‘Move For Me’, as well as ‘Angel On My Shoulder’ and ‘I Remember’ – a massive hit in the UK, US and, of course, Australia.

For Kaskade, it’s all about love. The proof is in Dynasty, his sixth album; love has never been more apparent in his sound. The first single, the title track, is a gritty production, smoothed out by the vocals of Haley, known to Kaskade fans the world over as the ethereal singer of ‘I Remember’ and ‘Move For Me’. There’s also the track ‘Only You’ which features production work from none other than Tiësto. The result is a blend of Tiësto’s signature pace of trance and Kaskade’s soulful swagger meets big floor Euro. As easily as Kaskade is able to work with a major like Tiësto, he can flip it right back into the indie space. ‘Fire In Your New Shoes’, featuring Dragonette’s Martina, delivers a rock-riffed, downtown cool, electro-pop sound sure to resonate all summer with the big city set.

This is beautiful, soulful music created by one of the world’s best – in fact, Kaskade was voted #35 in DJ Mags Top 100 DJs in 2010.

He’s hotter than ever.

Music interview

Krafty Kuts

I recently had the opportunity to have a chat with Krafty Kuts prior to his Oz tour which sees him playing at the Villa on December 3, (event info, tickets) Upon asking how he was, he informed me of his recent escape to Byron Bay. Evidently relaxed and refreshed from the little getaway ahead of a stack of dates across Australia and New Zealand, I knew i was in for a good interview.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen you play here in Perth, have you kept a tally of how many times you have been to Perth/Australia?

I think it has been about 12-15 times, that’s of course spread over about 10 years. That has been a very important part of building up a following here, I love coming to Perth/Australia and everytime I come, I try to bring fresh ideas and flavours and keep it interesting for the punters. I set a high standard for myself and everytime i try and make it bigger and better.

When: 27 November 2010

Many, many wonderful things hail from the land of the rising sun; and DJ Krush is an internationally acclaimed Japanese treasure. Hands together – bow. A Tokyo-born turntablist, Krush has a superb sense in mixing and composing his sound – no doubt most recognized as the first DJ to use turntables as live instruments, doing free sessions with live musicians on stage. Aside from his outernational activities as producer, remixer and DJ, he is adept at soundtracks for films, TV dramas & commercials. Krush builds soundscapes (not dance tracks) populated with snippets of melodies, oldschool beats, dub-like bass lines, Miles Davis-inspired horns phrases, turntable scratching and soulful diva crooning, and possess a strong jazz feeling. Krush established himself at the helm of Japan’s hip-hop with pieces of psychedelic, dub jazz-rock (Roll & Tumble, On The Dub-ble, Into The Water, Murder Of Soul) and made one hell of an impact with his sophomore album, Strictly Turntablised. Krush is Japanese jazz hip hop, built for the chin-stroker in us and enjoyed by the truest underground. Pure Shibuya, bitches.
